Yeah, I was waiting for a review like this. Most people are gonna buy Trd offroad or Z71. A lot of people have ZR2 in the mouth but no cash to buy it. :-/
My 2010 taco is a workhorse. I don’t think I’ll buy anything newer than a 2016 tacoma. I just hate all the technology. I like my trucks simple and tough as hell.
Same. I ended up getting the sr5 w/TRD sport package and used the money I saved for a 3" lift kit, BFG ko2's and 16" offroad wheels. No need for all the fancy electronics.
I sold my 2010 taco 6spd manual 4x4 trd OR 1gr (very rare combo mind you) because it got terrible gas mileage and was always getting things replaced under warranty. Even the rear springs were tsb'd and still squealed like a pig. Read diff leaked worse than Hillary Clinton's mouth drool after she takes her sedatives to sleep with Bill.
My 2000 prerunner is my daily and my weekend toy. People dropping 40grand for crawl control and a TRD badge just to visit places I manage to get to with 2wd and an open diff. Tacos are like a fine wine or scotch....better with age.
2016 has all the newer gadgets you see in the video. 2015 and down is your gen Tacoma. I wish TRD still offered a supercharger for these trucks. I was going to buy one for that reason but got in too late for it.
Both trucks perform exceptionally well, and really it depends on what you're looking for in a truck. Those of you that think that you can mimic Crawl Control using light throttle clearly do not understand how it works. You cannot individually detect slippage thousands of times per second in each individual wheel, and apply brake force to each wheel at different rates simultaneously by using "light throttle". Is it a perfect system? No, not at all. Is it far superior to going out there hoping to rely on "light throttle" to try and get yourself out of sand? You're damn right it is.
I would say the problem with this video is the fact he didn't try light throttle when attempting to get out. Crawl Control is neat, but it's kind of hard to say he "needed" crawl control when he didn't attempt to get out the proper way. Granted I'm pretty sure half the point of crawl control is to help people who don't know what they're doing.
I’m a huge Toyota fan (I have a 3rd Gen 4Runner with 266,000+ miles on it), but that Colorado - with the Diesel and front, center, and rear locking diffs - is incredibly capable and attractive as an overlanding platform.
I am a Toyota guy, in part, because more of it is made and assembled in the U.S. But I have to admit the Chevy is looking pretty good! It will be interesting going forward to see how reliable the Colorado is.
Nope, Crawl control uses the ECU, ABS, throttle and traction controls to compute available traction and send power to each wheel individually as needed. Normal 4wd low sends power 50/50 to front and back and does not adjust individual wheel torque.
For sand, yes, light throttle. Crawl control makes a noob better off road, but true experience and knowledge of your vehicle are invaluable to proper off roading technique. "Just hit the crawl control" ..he definitely is in love with that thing, when the Chevy didn't even need it on the rocks. "oh it's stuck" .. no, it's not.. YOU are stuck. He could have definitely gotten out of that sandy part. th-cam.com/video/_9mmajFmVcc/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/SuDaalqR1mY/w-d-xo.html
Great video!! Thanks for making it. I’ve read where the Colorado has an automatic locking differential. That’s probably when it kicked in going up that rock.
I hate that trucks have become luxury/lifestyle/family vehicles because its made their prices raise to be ridiculous. They have like doubled or tripled in price over the last 20 years.
JuniorMagicains Sycaster. Not that much, more because its gone from work truck to luxury family vehicle so they raised the prices as they added features and popularity grew.
I think crawl control uses the brakes to help distribute the power so probably not necessary to look it if relying on crawl control. Someone please check me on this.
RedReign I'm not sure about the Colorado, but a lot Chevys have been manufactured in Mexico and/or Canada for decades. Tacomas are manufactured in Monterey, CA
RedReign so, you'll buy a vehicle that puts food on the tables of Mexican workers before you'll buy one that feeds American workers? Understood. And taxpayers don't typically end up on the hook for billions in debt racked up by mismanaged companies. Over $100trillion for mismanaged government, yes, but private companies, no.
Daniel Tojcic I feel like if you wanted to talk about the tires the Tacoma needs an upgrade as well. Even a TRD off road with duratracs or KO2's would be a pretty even match up with the ZR2
Did you guys air down at Big Bear? As a noob offroader that is the first thing to do offroading. Well technically the first thing is be sure you have a air compressor. Lol
Noobs should probably avoid the trail that requires them to air down. lol I play with a prerunner, Ko2s at 30 psi have yet to get me stuck. I cant argue though, softer tires do make a noticeable difference, especially with open diff and 2wd.
You can air down only when necessary. Like stuck in deep sand but it also makes for a smoother ride on any trail. I run 40psi on the hiway and 20 on the trail. Could go lower but not necessary. I've gone as low as 10 psi out on the Dunes. No need to go lower than necessary.
Rob Daman Exactly what I was thinking. My Gu patrol doesn't have crawl control and the only two times I've nearly been stuck in sand I've been able to continue on with no assistance. But think it comes down to experience and knowing vehicle limits.
No contest Toyota by a long shot. My Taco just turned 10 and still turns heads. All the Chevy trucks in my area (snow and salt belt) areaare buckets of rust after 6 years on the road.
RedReign he's just stating that his 10 year old truck still causes people's heads to turn, obviously other Tacoma lovers, you mad he broke your neck or something ?
Great video, the trd-off road is a lot more set up for off road use, because the z71 is mainly a suspension package. The z71 would be a lot better for the occasional light off road user because of the fuel economy, ride, and automatic locking rear diff.
Crawl control feature is nice but....what happens when that system stops working? Most of these situations a person who’s been off road and uses their head would never get into. Off roading is all bout knowing the limits of your skills and the trucks capability. I like the crawl feature but if you know how to drive off road you don’t need it. IMO
I agree i watched the video of the guy getting out of sand with brake and throttle control, but it is great for people trying to get into off roading making mistakes that they werent aware of....its also a nice way of going downhill in an automatic
I drive a 2011 avalanche and have seen these clips of the crawl control before..... This dude has a lead block on his foot.... My 6000 lbs truck can crawl out of a rut and has pulled out more than one TRD off the beach.... Check the clip of the dude in the Dodge .... Cool feature wish they gave the chevy a chance
Zachary Sheppard They are auto lockers. Complete garbage compared to selectable lockers. With auto lockers they can engage in snow when you dont want them too. You cant compare to a tacoma.
I find it crazy how people compare American cars to Japanese or European cars. If you have the money for a Tacoma etc you will never look at any American truck.
Ok I’ve driven in deep sand with my Colorado Z71 and have never gotten stuck! Granted I’ve never tried to, but air down to 12-15 psi and drive with common sense! That’s what crawl control is for, those without a kick if common sense or off road experience in sand.
If crawl control can get a truck unstuck, so can a driver who doesn’t mash the gas to the floor in a panic, or to help sell crawl control. Both are great trucks, I seriously think they are so close people should buy based on which they like the looks of better.
I love that you talked about that damn air dam. Chevy has made their trucks into floor sweepers both this one and the Silverado.... Single biggest reason I wouldn't buy one. (yes I know about the ZR2)
You get real, and open your eyes and read the article, it's all about rust that caused all the failures , facts not fake news, toyotas doesn't last forever, not reliability as many think they are, plus i ain't no chevy guy either.
As someone who favors Japanese cars, this is absolutely not true. For whatever reason, Rams do rust quickly, but Chevys and Fords last longer as far as sheet metal is concerned. Mechanically - not so much.
Alexander Golubev Jr - Thats not true here in the midwest. Chevy anything especially trucks are the worst for rust. Even our 2012 and 2013 company trucks which get washed and cleaned often are already starting to rust. This is the same when I got to dealerships and look at used trucks. Chevys always have the most rust.
You could have driven the Chevy out of the sand with some throttle control and steering manipulation. Maybe even without letting some air out of the tires. Also, a better comparison would have been the Z71 with the V6. If you know how to drive in sand you wouldn’t need the crawl control. 🙂
good vid i have a 2002 tacoma 4wd standard with all trd goodies super charger etc.that blue def i have seen on you tube and it is said if you stock-up be careful the ingredients start breaking down right after it's produced .so you have to keep buying new as you go.
Shakerhood69 you are absolutely correct! However if we compared the ZR2 to the pro we would have the same results in the sand because the ZR2 does NOT come with any offroad system other than diff locks. Crawl Control is a very important technology as mentioned in the video.
Wow!!! I can’t believe it!! A not biased review. Thanks for a realistic and sincere review. And I think the Colorado will be a good contender. Regarding reliability just remember it is a Isuzu truck so it will be very good.
I agree. I bought the Taco, but could have gone with the Colorado if it weren't for a few Nit Pics. Both are good. The Tacoma is a better long term value.
This is the only channel I've seen that favoured the Tacoma over the Colorado. Nice to see different views both seem to be really great trucks. Can't wait to see what Ford does when they reintroduce the ranger.
I think the crawl control is cool and all. But will anyone do the sdhit on flat ground. Every time its on an incline, and the driver backs out every time downhill. I want to see this tech, and how well it performs, bellied out on flat ground.
If this was a quality comparison then you would have used the Colorado ZR2 not the Z71. Then you would have had crawl control and two locking differentials
Sorry to divert from the car/truck reviews.. But it seems you have taken my absolute favorite local trail 3n61*, more commonly known as Jacoby Canyon.... anyway, I thought that trail was closed after the Holcomb Valley fire. Was reading it wouldn't be reopened until summer of this year. Is it now open?
if it's a sales war then it's a rout. toyota will probably sell twice as many tacos as chevy sells colorados in 2018. toyota's only limit on how many tacos they can sell is production capacity.
I like that you removed the air dam and running boards, that made the comparison much better. Anyone headed off road in challenging terrain would do the same.
The crawl control is very gimmicky except in a few situations. It by no means competes with actual traction devices such as torsen, Detroit lockers, posi, etc, but it does seem to help in sand with the open diff. When you thought you got stuck in the z71, the locker engaged and drove you through. The g80 takes, I believe, 150 rpm difference between the two wheels to energize, so you should know your equipment before hand to help maximize your truck. I'm very glad you showed up TFL by actually removing the chin spoiler, thank you. Lastly, diesel exhaust fluid is for NOx emissions not particulate emissions. Particulates are caught by the DPF and burned under regen, while the scr utilizes a catalyst that reacts with urea (DEF) and NOx to reduce NOx emissions.
lol comparing Toyotas best off road midsize truck to chevy best towing mid size truck. Make a real comparison go Chevy ZR2 Colorado. You would not compare the ZR2 to just a Tacoma 4x4 its not a legit test
My two cents. The Tacoma has always had its market...not too big not too small. When the Colorado(S-10) and Ranger were gone their customers(most of them) bought silverados and F150s. Why not, their leases were just as cheap or were made to be cheap. Now that they brought them back, I cannot see that they want to lose Silverado and F150 customer so...Ford and GM wanting to be in the "market" are importing their overseas models to north america. Cheap and easy to do. However, that Colorado looks like a badged Izuzu pick up and of course the Ranger is the Australian equivalent. Blah blah blah, nevertheless, they can only drive the Tacoma to a higher price and hopefully, Toyota will see that and prevent it. Still, the Tacoma is a proven product and most(90%) will stay loyal as their needs for this vehicle is less fad and more lifestyle.
I like the utility of a truck better than an suv. I would take a new Colorado ZR2 diesel. Too bad new trucks are so damn expensive with all the electronics. The stock tires on both those trucks are crap too.
Yeah seriously. Crawl Control is neat but it doesn't take all that much to get out of that. Use 4Lo and slightly apply the throttle. That's basically all Crawl Control did. The tires weren't spinning fast in crawl Control but for whatever reason they thought making the tires spin would get them out of it.
Boy you wouldn't be bias towards a crawl control knob would You? The TRD Pro, is a lot more advanced than a Z71. Z71 is a suspension advancement. Not a drivetrain advancement. Try Apple to apples. ZR2 vs TRD Pro.
Look, I really like the Tacoma and its the one I would buy but this crawl control heavy comparison was a little one sided but I see now this test was in response to criticism on another crawl control test. If doing apples to apples you probably should have put in the rear locker, since the z71 has one that can't be disengaged (auto locking)
Crawl control is a legit system.
Jordan Yang yep, im sold
Yang true
Thanks for the comparison. Most of us aren't going to purchase the zr2 or TRD Pro; so I appreciate this comparison for the average consumer.
Yeah, I was waiting for a review like this. Most people are gonna buy Trd offroad or Z71. A lot of people have ZR2 in the mouth but no cash to buy it. :-/

Buy a manual Taco. Upgraded interior and styling but still the same old truck. No push button, no crawl control.
I sold my 2010 taco 6spd manual 4x4 trd OR 1gr (very rare combo mind you) because it got terrible gas mileage and was always getting things replaced under warranty. You never put the front or rear end lockers on the Colorado why

But I have to admit the Chevy is looking pretty good!
It will be interesting going forward to see how reliable the Colorado is.
Like how he had the wipers rubbing sand into the windshield the whole time.
My really love the 2017 Tacoma off-road that I purchased it was light years ahead of the newer Silverado I had
Don't be mad he purchased the better truck. You could always trade in your Chevy and step up to an actual off road truck :)
Ted yellowstone if he
Crawl control can be achieved with lite throttle
not the same
Nope, Crawl control uses the ECU, ABS, throttle and traction controls to compute available traction and send power to each wheel individually as needed. Normal 4wd low sends power 50/50 to front and back and does not adjust individual wheel torque.
lite throttle, yes.
Not a chance. There is no way a driver can modulate wheel spin to each wheel with a light foot. It's a far more complicated system than that.
For sand, yes, light throttle. Crawl control makes a noob better off road, but true experience and knowledge of your vehicle are invaluable to proper off roading technique. Great video!! Thanks for making it. I’ve read where the Colorado has an automatic locking differential. That’s probably when it kicked in going up that rock.
Gas vs diesel. Long bed vs short bed.
I went with the manual transmission in my 2017 TRD Off-road. A-TRAC and a selectable locker is way better.
I hate that trucks have become luxury/lifestyle/family vehicles because its made their prices raise to be ridiculous. They have like doubled or tripled in price over the last 20 years.
Cobb inflation
JuniorMagicains Sycaster. Not that much, more because its gone from work truck to luxury family vehicle so they raised the prices as they added features and popularity grew.
You never locked the rear diff in the taco in the vid, much more capable than the z71
Locks Bog the z71 has an auto locking rear

RedReign lol. Okay. We'll ignore the government bailouts of GM and the fact that the bulk of GM is owned by the Chinese now, but 'Merica.
Would be nice to see TRD Pro vs ZR2 vs colorado Z71 midnight with duratrac tires
theres many other vids on youtube
Agreed, you should have compared it to a standard tacoma. The ZR2 is the comparable vehicle.
Then they would need to get the TRD PRO to compare apples to apples.
Yeah, I guess I didn't notice that it was the TRD Off Road not the TRD Pro.
Daniel Tojcic I feel like if you wanted to talk about the tires the Tacoma needs an upgrade as well. Even a TRD off road with duratracs or KO2's would be a pretty even match up with the ZR2

toyota is stepping their game up
Look at all the butthurt Chevy fans in the comments. Lol! I know even if I don’t off-road, my Tacoma will out last Chevy in the long run.
I'd love to see a crawl control test on flat ground. All the sand burying tests are always on a hill =\
No contest Toyota by a long shot. My Taco just turned 10 and still turns heads. All the Chevy trucks in my area (snow and salt belt) areaare buckets of rust after 6 years on the road.
Chris Krolack is that why Toyota had a frame recall? Tacoma is all hype.
RedReign huh?
huh?
RedReign he's just stating that his 10 year old truck still causes people's heads to turn, obviously other Tacoma lovers, you mad he broke your neck or something ?
RedReign or wait maybe you're just mad because you have a chevy haha

Actually you don't need it if you know how to drive off road

Should've been YES vs ZR2
Hey amigo, just so you know, all 4/4 have crawl control... but it is a skill of the driver 😎😋😋
Don't forget that rear locker
Tacoma TRD Offroad 4x4 hands down. That Rear Locking differential is worth its weight in gold.
Taco Trek Zr2 Colorado has front and rear lockers.Yota don't want any.
Zachary Sheppard My friends Colorado has lockers but they fail to engage Chevy needs to find a fix for there faulty system
all z-71 trucks have a rear locker, its called an Eaton g-80 automatic locker.
The Chevys require you to engage the lockers and then drive, they lock after the truck begins to move.
Zachary Sheppard They are auto lockers. Complete garbage compared to selectable lockers. With auto lockers they can engage in snow when you dont want them too. You cant compare to a tacoma.
You should have tried the Colorado ZR2 instead
I find it crazy how people compare American cars to Japanese or European cars. If you have the money for a Tacoma etc you will never look at any American truck.
haha the air pressure wont do crap if your high centered
This is a front business for the mafia
Awesome video, it is nice to see a video about the z71 and offroad. Most vidies is with the pro and zr2
Ok I’ve driven in deep sand with my Colorado Z71 and have never gotten stuck! Granted I’ve never tried to, but air down to 12-15 psi and drive with common sense! That’s what crawl control is for, those without a kick if common sense or off road experience in sand.
I’d love to see a gas vs gas comparison. Everything is Toyota gas vs this Chevy diesel
If crawl control can get a truck unstuck, so can a driver who doesn’t mash the gas to the floor in a panic, or to help sell crawl control. Both are great trucks, I seriously think they are so close people should buy based on which they like the looks of better.

He forgot to mention the Toyota will take 10 years before it starts rusting and the Chevy will take 10 minutes....lol.
Camdex blog.caranddriver.com/690000-toyota-tacomas-recalled-for-leaf-springs-that-could-snap-damage-fuel-tank-and-brake-line/
That has nothing to do with rust and I'd still buy the TRD and just take it in for the recall. What GM has never had a recall....? Get real.
You get real, and open your eyes and read the article, it's all about rust that caused all the failures , facts not fake news, toyotas doesn't last forever, not reliability as many think they are, plus i ain't no chevy guy either.

The craw control was awesome
Outstanding review, very knowledgeable and entertaining 👍🏻
You could have driven the Chevy out of the sand with some throttle control and steering manipulation. Maybe even without letting some air out of the tires.
Also, a better comparison would have been the Z71 with the V6.
If you know how to drive in sand you wouldn’t need the crawl control. 🙂
Wouild the zr 2 colorado be a better comparison?
JerseyDude1967 no, that would be more the TRD Pro’s competitor
good vid i have a 2002 tacoma 4wd standard with all trd goodies super charger etc.that blue def i have seen on you tube and it is said if you stock-up be careful the ingredients start breaking down right after it's produced .so you have to keep buying new as you go.
Also you are comparing apples and oranges. Use the ZR2
Jeremy Kissner that wasn’t the trd Pro. It was the off-road. So apples to apples.
(1) Video was shot last year before the ZR2 came out and (2) ZR2 competes with TRD Pro and we're working on that video this spring.
Jeremy Kissner
Does the ZR2 come with crawl control or any offroad system other than diff lock? If not then you would have the same results.
The Z-71 is the Off Road Package so it is an Apples to Apples comparison, the ZR2 would go against the TRD Pro Tacoma.
Shakerhood69 you are absolutely correct! However if we compared the ZR2 to the pro we would have the same results in the sand because the ZR2 does NOT come with any offroad system other than diff locks. Crawl Control is a very important technology as mentioned in the video.
I love Tacoma
Wow!!! I can’t believe it!! A not biased review. Thanks for a realistic and sincere review. And I think the Colorado will be a good contender. Regarding reliability just remember it is a Isuzu truck so it will be very good.
Get a different driver, its obvious he favored the Toyo.
Agree with previous post comparing Apple's to Apple's you would have used the Zr2 instead.
It may be that the Colorado is a long box...
didnt mention you had to remove the side steps too. so two things you had to do just somewhat hang with the toyota.
I have crawl control in my 86 hilux its called a parking brake thats pulled about half way...
I agree. I bought the Taco, but could have gone with the Colorado if it weren't for a few Nit Pics. Both are good. The Tacoma is a better long term value.
I thought the Colorado had lockers, front and rear?
The ZR2 does, the Z71 has a auto rear locker.
This is the only channel I've seen that favoured the Tacoma over the Colorado. Nice to see different views both seem to be really great trucks. Can't wait to see what Ford does when they reintroduce the ranger.
The Toyota will be an awesome pickup for a long time. The Colorado will just be a pos s10 in no time at all.
I think the crawl control is cool and all. But will anyone do the sdhit on flat ground. Every time its on an incline, and the driver backs out every time downhill. I want to see this tech, and how well it performs, bellied out on flat ground.
Taco is superior, mines desert tan
Great video! Thanks! A proper comparison is the PRO vs the ZR2 though.
Nathan S This was shot before the fire.
I love toyota and Chevy, have for years.. both are Great trucks!!!
(Nothing beats an old Toyota 4runner off road tho!)
It seems like the Taco rules on this video, After watching this clip I went and get a taco exactly like the orange Taco here.
Both trucks have the same exact tire and size?
Quiero una tacoma lástima no la venden en mi país igual soy un toyotero y tengo una hilux Saludos desde Argentina
I would have also liked to see both towing that boat too!!
A sales war hahaha. Ill never own another Chevy product again.
stuntin on you same for me but with toyota
stuntin on you you arent worthy of the bowtie
Jesse Hernandez nor do i want to.
if it's a sales war then it's a rout. toyota will probably sell twice as many tacos as chevy sells colorados in 2018. toyota's only limit on how many tacos they can sell is production capacity.
Excellent trucks. Both of them.
Comparison vs ZR2 would be more accurate.
Would you have come to the same conclusion, if the Tacoma didn't have the "Crawl Control" option ?
If you need crawl control you shouldn't be off road
Not fair the ZR2 vs Tacoma perfect match
Like i said before all these guys got ZR2 in the mouth but no cash to buy one. They did a mainstream test on what the average 4x4 buyer is gonna get.
Tacoma Win!
ZR2 all the way
guy proulx i saw that and it's not good
nice comparison video. 6:58 what do we listen to in the Colorado while trail running? Def Leopard! Seems appropriate .
So lame should have compared the ZR2
Good camera footage. Shame you don,t have Toyota Hilux to test and compare.
Just gotta say with performance put aside both these trucks are sexy
He didn't even get the off-road Colorado 😐😑
My 2010 Tacoma would do that rock section in 4hi no problem.
I like that you removed the air dam and running boards, that made the comparison much better. Anyone headed off road in challenging terrain would do the same.
You air down before digging in and getting stuck. Switching between 4hi and 4lo makes no difference when you have no traction.
Crawl control my ass my dad has been doing (crawl control) old chevy granny gear 4x4 let the clutch out it will undig itself out
Why not the zr2 ?? Wow unbelievable!
Because the ZR2 competes with the TRD Pro, not the TRD Off-Road (the lower end off road model).
kercmerk it wasn't out when this video shot
Driver fail,
That test was unfair for the Colorado the ZR2 is the truely capable off road Colorado
"It's almost May" but this is published Jan 3, 2018 ? Huh?
The tires look slightly bigger on the Tacoma. Does that make a difference when being stuck in the sand?
Just wait till summer, or winter, and use the air control in the Chevy, have a fire extinguisher.
lol comparing Toyotas best off road midsize truck to chevy best towing mid size truck. Make a real comparison go Chevy ZR2 Colorado. You would not compare the ZR2 to just a Tacoma 4x4 its not a legit test
I wouldn't spend $50k on a new truck to take it off road.
Tacoma 100%
Tacoma wins
Wanted to see zr2
That yota needs better tires if they were to use the ZR2
If you go easy on the throttle you can manually do what the taco does in sand
Dwalk22 boss exactly

Yeah seriously. Crawl Control is neat but it doesn't take all that much to get out of that. Use 4Lo and slightly apply the throttle. That's basically all Crawl Control did. The tires weren't spinning fast in crawl Control but for whatever reason they thought making the tires spin would get them out of it.
Yeah the guy is obviously getting paid more by toyota.
I will never own a General Motors product again nothing but junk
Boy you wouldn't be bias towards a crawl control knob would You? The TRD Pro, is a lot more advanced than a Z71. Z71 is a suspension advancement. Not a drivetrain advancement. Try Apple to apples. ZR2 vs TRD Pro.
The taco is TRD off road not TRD pro.
