  • Have you ever wondered how to tell the difference between frogs and toads? In the latest episode of Ask the Aquarium, Senior Educator Julia Gregory - with a little help from a Splendid Tree Frog and a Cane Toad - offers up a few telltale (though not foolproof) signs to look for.

This was quite enjoyable to watch as someone who often believes people see toads as a completely separate species from frogs (not believing that they are a type of frog). Thank you for posting this!

Best and most straightforward answer for this question I’ve heard in my life, thank you for your work and information. I can’t stand either of them but they are still God’s creation so I somewhat have SOME love for them

For some reason i now feel the urge to paint a renaissance noble woman holding a giant cane toad like a cat.

Pretty sure the cane toad is a female based on her size alone.
Also, one thing that sets toads apart is that all “true toads” have poison-secreting parotoid glands on the back of their head/neck.

I am still confused do both need water medium to lay their eggs?

Excellent question! All amphibians need water for their eggs since the membrane around the egg is not waterproof (and able to hold moisture in). But some of them don’t need MUCH water!
Our Mossy Frogs lay their eggs on wet tree branches and leaves over pools of water. The tadpoles wiggle out and drop into the water to continue their life cycle. That all happens in a rain forest environment, so the relative humidity is quite high, which helps the process.
