I had the immense privilege and the honor to have worked with Miss Baker in 1975 @ Bobino. I was the youngest dancer in the cast . The show was called “ Josephine “ It was based on her life story celebrating her 50 years in show business from her humble beginning in St Louis to her triumphant comeback in Monte Carlo ....She used to call me “ her little page “ (Son petit page )cause of my age ! I just turned 18 th on April 1st 1975. @0:53 you can see me on the bottom of the stairs on left of the screen. luckily for me I have tons of memorable pics from the show as well as unforgettable stories of this short but amazing run. ! She was extremely engaged with all of the dancers .Wanting to know everyone ‘s names .Josephine really truly care about people She was a true icon immensely talented beautiful ,tough ,iconic ,generous , activist .compassionate & kind . She would bring oranges for the entire company saying “ My children you need lots Vit C for strength and energy “ She was so right cause the rehearsals were long and grueling ,,,. Bobino ‘s stage was too small to accommodate a cast of 8 boys 12 girls 3 comedians 1 little girl who played young josephine and 1 gorgeous dancer who represented Jo in the famous banana dance ! ...so they had to transformed the stage by expanding it including putting additional seats in the theater and building brand new dressing rooms to accommodate such a big cast all while we were practicing in the lobby of The theater. ! It was bit chaotic to say the list & quite cold being mid -February But no one seemed to care it was so exciting to be part of this show ! Even though None of the big Paris music ‘halls like Le Casino de Paris ,Le Moulin Rouge or les Folies Bergere wanted to take the risk producing Miss baker mostly for insurance purposes There were already rumors circulating of her failing health but a small theater on Paris left bank called Bobino took a chance ...Josephine liked to rehearsed late at night after we were done .She even enjoyed having her favorite dish Spaghetti bolognese around 1 am at a restaurant right across the theater. I will never forget the 1 st time I saw her performing once the stage was finally ready. That night She was in the audience watching us dancing with huge smile on her face applauding many times throughout being so proud of the cast. After all she was watching part of her whole life story in front of her eyes. ... In fact during the promotion of the show a French journalist asked her. “ How does it feel to see your life story being played and starring in your own life musical ? She replied “ it’s wonderful At least i will see what they think of me when I am still alive !!!! I When we were done the director Andre levasseur said “ Josephine c ‘ est a vous “ she jumped on stage and belt a song from the Brazilian number called” Que c‘est bon de vivre” She seemed to be completely possessed by the rhythm of the Afro Cuban sound very reminiscing of “Princess Tam-Tam “ all those years earlier Her moves were so unbelievable. Her body was in perfect shape specially in her Chanel suit !!!! There is No way you would have guessed that this beautiful lady was in her late 60 ‘s. A goddess still !!!! What thrill for all of us. A true MASTER CLASS ,,,,,,, I did enjoyed this interview very much it was done during our previews . I just wanted to clarify one point. We rehearsed the show for about 1 month and half . We actually did more than 4 performances. We started with one week of previews on March 27th with a special Press night on April 2 Nd to glorious reviews ! We had another full week of performances with a big opening gala on April 8 th Many stars attended like Grace Kelly Sophia Loren & Alain Delon We did one more performance on the 9th then the next day we heard that she was in a coma she never woke up and past in the early hours of March 12 th. I will never forget this unparalleled talent. Josephine had many lives sometimes colorful and at times tragic She had the perfect combination of determination charisma and humanity. A trailblazer. Pure legend. ❤️❤️❤️❤️check photos of Baker and me just typed “ Josephine baker and me Cittaroma P “. Enjoy.

Josephine Baker, an icon, and I have been one of her biggest fans since I was a small child at the age of 3. Years later, I purchased a metal statue on a marble base of Josephine Baker taking a bow with her leg stretched holding a bouquet of flowers, and it is one of my most prized possession. She still means the world to me, and I feel a deep connection to her.

I just turned 18 th on that April 1 st 1975 This is a clip of the rehearsal it’s the finale of “ Josephine “ called “ Paris Paname “. We did 14 perfomances and officially opened on April 10 th The Who’s who was at Opening night Gala. the likes of Grace Kelly Sophia Loren Alain Delon ... That night she got a standing ovation for over 5 minutes. ....@ 2:14. You can see we are on all our knees We stayed in that position sometimes for over 10 minutes cause she would talk to the audience thanking them for not forgetting her ! The public would go wild. Shouting.” We love you Josephine “. On t aime Josephine “ it was extremely emotional. Specially knowing that no theater ‘ owners like the folies Bergeres Casino de Paris or Moulin rouge wanted to take the r
Gamble to have Josephine ‘ s show due to insurances ! only a small music _hall called Bobino took the risk !!!! Glad they did. I willl never forget performing with this legend Merci Madame Baker.

Josephine Baker, who was 68 in this video, was not just an entertainer, she was a defiant force against racism and the Nazis. She deserves a place in world history. I was troubled by someone calling her a who're for doing the Banana Dance in the 20's on this forum. She did what she had to do in order to survive in show business, in spite of personal issues. That's the point that individual fails to see.

Her banana dance wasn't (just) about financial survival. It was a satirical act, done to communicate to white people (especially men) "i'm aware you see me this way but i can't care, and i'll do whatever i please with your stereotypes for me"

Josephine : Good , so wonderful to reconnect with my family & everyone but mostly my audience who made me who I am today Interviewer: this show tells the story of your life is ‘nt bit odd for you to see it live on stage ? Josephine : No not at all it’s wonderful at least I can see what people are saying bout me while I am still alive ! How is your big family doing ? Josephine : they are growing up very quickly I have one of my son Luis who is getting married on the 31 st Interviewer : do you have 10 children ? Josephine: No ! 10 boys & 2 girls. Interviewer : 12 ? Josephine : yes 12. Thank god the girls can ‘t hear you !!!! Interviewer : Are they going to come to see the show ? Josephine : no they are busy studying Interviewer : do you regret it ? Josephine. : you mean that the children can come to see the show ? ... well it’s difficult to say cause right now between the rehearsals and hard work I prefer that they are not around because when I am with my children I forget everything else it’s all about them .... and right now I need some quiet time alone to concentrate so I can be totally devoted to my Paris audience ...... I just dislike that the camera man/woman was so.. close up in her face...showing her imperfections (heavy eye bags). I know its an old clip but I just think it would been repectable and considerate to zoom out some. I guess this was before Botox and excessive plastic surgery. However she was spectacular and gorgeous. I see her as my Aunt Baker I never met in person but her spirit lives.

Americas first Sex Symbol Icon with real Raw talent....before Jean Harlow, Mea West, Clara Bow, Betty Grable, Rita Hayworth, Lana Turner, Marilyn Monroe, Janye Mansfield, Bettie Page, Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Gina Lollobrigitta, Lili St. Cyr,
Ann Margaret, Raquel Welch, Brigitte Bardot, Farrah Fawsett, Mason stevens Pamela Anderson, Anna Nicole Smith, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce...you had the extraordinary( Josephine Baker)
World renowned performer, World War II spy and activists,
are few of the titles used to describe Josephine Baker. One of the most successful African American performers in French history, Baker's career illustrates the ways entertainers can use their platforms to change the world.
Baker's dancing was rooted in popular Jazz age Dances, like the Charleston. With long, rubber-like legs, her improvised movement featured quick steps and low kicks, swinging arms and lots of ballon. She fused basic ballet technique with her blend of Broadway, tap and African dance styles.
She was an extraordinary singer and performer.
During the 1950s, Baker returned to the United States and supported the Civil Rights Movement. In particular, Baker participated in various demonstrations. She boycotted segregated clubs and concert venues, arguing that if African-Americans could not attend her shows, she would not perform.
She Queen of the Charleston dance and Jazz dance....she was the first Burlesque Dancer and performance artist.
Josephine rivaled Mary Pickford, Gloria Swanson, Lillian Gish,
Before her death in 1975 she already had a 7 decade career going back to the Vaudeville days in the 1900's
She has broken so meny barriers for women of color and did risky, daring, shocking thing's on stage,
She was a performances artist, multi talented, and all around performer. .
