I've owned two of the Rycote and I love their products, though sadly they now both have play in them. Neither my boom op, sound utility nor I are rough on my rigs and we are the only people who handle them. After the second Rycote started to experience play I switched to the Ambient. I have to give it to Ambient on this one. Yes, the Ambient is more expensive and yes the Rycote is more intuitive. However, we are using newer Ambient and Panamic poles and haven't had to deal with the cumbersome piece protruding and getting in the way. The Ambient is also solid machined metal on metal as the Rycote has two metal crossbars on a spring system. Design wise, the Rycote is already set up to have parts loosen over time. I've only owned the Ambient for a month but I am confident that we will never experience the same issue. It is a shame because I really love the Rycote when there is no play but I have to be assured that every time i reach for it or swap out rigs the thing WILL NOT move.
You have to also remember that Ambient had theirs on the market 10+ years before the Rycote was released. BTW, shameless plug, check out the video on my channel where I show 6 common quick releases on the market today.
I like the Ambient more, because the rycote come lose to easy in my opinion. I mean that downward pull. Price wise, I have to meantion, that Ambient come with 2 tips. Rycote with one?

Ahh very good point about the 2 tips. Makes sense in that respect. As for coming loose it's rock solid unless you somehow catch it and pull it. :)
