I grew up snaring rabbits over 60 years ago using brass snare wire. All the videos I have ever watched you are the only one that showed the proper way to straighten the wire.
I never understood the mechanism of how it would tighten. Thank you for making this instructional video. I was watching Alone and there was one lady who was snaring rabbits and I was like “yes! I need to learn this!” Frigging food prices are out of control. Some day, I want to be completely self-sufficient.
thanks man. I'm gonna have to start living off my land because I lost my job. I must watch the video of you making the snare again. God bless you and your family
Hey Clay! Great video ! I loved season 8 and I rooted for you from day “One” when you won, it was like my favorite teams winning the World Series, the Stanley Cup, and the Super Bowl all at once! Your perseverance was nothing shy of inspirational all the way to your victory. Then to see your beautiful family and how they embraced you back was a sensational and endless win! I love the series so much and sometimes while I’m practicing my own survival tactics here in the hills of PA I pretend I’m on the show while I video myself lol. I also am super stoked about getting your book that I just ordered two seconds before writing this comment. So I just wanna thank you for not just showing the world your skills but more importantly, your words of wisdom that helped me with clarifying things I’ve taken for granted without even being way out in the middle of nowhere but right there unnoticed in front of me. Bless you man and your beautiful family.
Got a little rabbit snaring in Army 45 years ago. I use picture frame cable. Other than that ever thing is the same. Snow on ground makes it so much easier to find trails.
You were definitely my favorite to win season 8. I’m glad you won and I hope the money put you and your family in a good place monetarily. Good job brother!!
Here in the UK we use copper wire for rabbit wires as you say they done let go . I've not snared rabbits or foxes for donkeys years, even since I caught my Jack Russell in a fox snare , she was unharmed luckily. I shut her in while I was setting up but a family member let her out not knowing. It was only by chance i backtracked and heard the little rascal barking i found her. Great video and given me inspiration to dig out my snares and have another go.
Been talking to Rusty the President of the Idaho trappers association for a few years now in hopes that they can get snaring rabbit legal in Idaho. Would be a great way to feed yourself while out on the trap line! Thanks for the video, great content
I wrap the eye portion around a small stick twice to form the eye. The stick provides leverage for making the securing wraps tight as well as making a perfect eye.
Been snaring rabbits and foxes for 40 years in Scotland. Along with fishing with an otter board. Yes I was a serious poacher in my youth. Country man all the way. Just ordered a Samick sage 50lb bow for a mid life crisis poaching escapade. I have rifles and shot hundreds of deer. Just want one taken with a bow. Anyway Clay. Love your channel. My wife got Encephalitis two years ago and I am now her full time carer. Just need the time to get out and hunt.
@@yugen poaching is a different word in the UK. All land is owned by someone even if it’s the forestry commission or the woodland trust etc. Poaching here is very different to poaching in the US
Then you'll know this isn't the best way to snare rabbits or hares. For rabbits make the snares 6 inches off the ground with a larger loop that covers the whole width of the run. For any Americans doubting this we snare thousands of rabbits in a year over here, I don't there's many men who snares over 100 rabbits a season in the lower 48.
Hello clay, I was watching this video and you mentioned Alone and I realized that you where the person me and my family where all voting for to win! I really love your videos, keep up the good work:)
hi clay seen many videos over the yrs on rabbit snaring but yours had some good tips on it id never seen before so well happy .trouble is live in the uk and cant test them here thanks for sharing
I have been waiting so long for someone to make a video showing this. Thank you so much brother👊👊. I've been using cable snares for ground hogs, very effective.
Always learn something watching you. I just finished watching your season of alone on Netflix. It was awesome. I know it’s hard but I really wish they would’ve showed more in the show. I’m super curious why you never build a little canoe or boat though.
I found snares like that that had been there so long the trees they were tied to grew over the wire by at least an inch and the snares were still very functional I still have em
Don't follow this advice of you live in England, search for a man called Glenn waters. A man called woodga also does a DVD on rabbit snaring and he catches thousands a year.
Saw a video where it said to take your initial loop, twist it into a figure 8 and fold it onto itself then feed your wire thru. Makes it into somewhat of a lock on the wire
I've recently come to like brass wire 22 gauge snares. They are very soft so give if you get something large. That's something I picked up in N, Canada from Mors Kohanski's guys n galls. Karamat wilderness ways. Great video boss!
Snares are amazing at catching animals. It's a numbers game so best to set a lot to up your chances of success. Some states have laws concerning how close you set them to each other.
Right when you had had it with the gill net, and everyone was starving and tapping out, I thought about it and looked up the rules to see if trapping was allowed. I was wondering why nobody was simply setting small game traps. That place had to be loaded with rabbits, martels, squirrels etc. Sure enough as I kept watching, low abd behold you went to the snare and got instant food! Which brought ne to here to see how you did it. Great job and good thinking to prepare for the show. Boy did it pay off. Is that a book I saw in the backround? U wrote a how to manual? Gotta read that guide to survival. Cool stuff and congratulations.
I was also curious about the wire snares. I have snared just about everything you can here in WV but, like you said, with cable. I doubt the wire would hold a beaver. Shame. Beaver are very easy to snare, I’ve taken several with snares. Nice video
I went to a survival show a while back in CDA Idaho. When you create your small loop, leave the excess and turn it into a hair snag. What this does is if the animal tries to back out of it, they are unable to because the hair snag pokes into their skin and they will stop from trying to back out of it.
I've a smallholding in Cumbria, UK that's plagued with rabbits this year. It's time for me to become proficient at snaring, as I can't get near enough with my air rifle.
Strip some old extension cord and use the copper wire. Never lost anything using it. Super strong, super cheap, never opens up. Find scrap bits almost anywhere.
Thanks for sharing, Clay! With talk of food shortages, some may not have to wait for winter. Looks like you picked up one of Teresa's wool pullovers? She's the best! Good shootin to ya, Steve
Great video you can get snare wire in the craft section of Walmart it's called crafting wire I got 26 guage it's perfect for small game and very pliable you get about 270feet for about 4 dollars
another great video, been trying this type of snare on my land but no luck. thanks for some new ideas. Hope I win the Alone sweeps it would be cool to talk to you
We’ll done Clay. One thing I would add, and I have yet to see in Alone is using the hare snares with a bait pile. They love fresh cedar, poplar, willow boughs and tops. Cut the bait and pile it up. Set on the trails leading to the bait pile and in the perimeter of the bait pile. Works like a charm. Let them come to you.
I've been watching/searching for wire trapping videos as well. There's a lot less information out there on wire vs cable since cable is so ideal. Great video and thanks for the information!
There is conflicting info on whether or not it is safe to hunt rabbits in the spring and summer. The problem seems to be with fleas, and bot fly infection. One source said as long as the liver wasn't spotted the rabbit was okay to eat, although fully cooking the meat was imperative and would kill any possible bacteria. Being an experienced hunter, I was hoping you could clarify this issue for me. We have a large rabbit colony and my daughter loves to hunt. Just want to make sure it is safe to do so in the spring/summer, or should she wait until after the 1st frost?
I grew up snaring rabbits over 60 years ago using brass snare wire. All the videos I have ever watched you are the only one that showed the proper way to straighten the wire.
How can you straighten the wire with your hands in any other way?????
@@ngrey5092 You can’t get it real nice any other way but I have seen people try to straighten it with their fingers.
@allanlavallee7171 how can I make a lock with the normal snare wire? I'm a bigginer
Called loading the snare
As natives of Idaho, my wife and I were rooting for you when we watched Alone. You represented our state awesomely!
Thanks for the video!
Awesome! Thank you!

Go for it!
thanks man. I'm gonna have to start living off my land because I lost my job. I must watch the video of you making the snare again. God bless you and your family
When I was in the army we used the trip wire that was used for the claymores mines..., worked perfectly.

This was amazing information, and is exactly what I was looking for. I needed to know how they work, and how to set them up. Thanks so much!
Glad it was helpful!

Agreed, I’m planning to talk to the commission about it.
@@clayhayeshunter beings how you have worked for them I hope you can get it done. Would be a great asset to feed yourself in the field
Hey Clay, if you make your loop at the end of your wire in the shape of the number 8 and fold it over so you have two loops. It creates a lock
Interesting, I’ll have to give that a try.
@@clayhayeshunter let us know if it works for you! And give us a tutorial

Love this video! Really appreciate all the work you do putting making these!
Just watched the season 8 final ep last night, searched for snares today and was thrilled to find this. Great job!!
The best explanation on snaring I've seen.
This man may save my life in the future. Thank you
So simple and easy to understand. You are a legend sir, thank you for your service. The stuffed bunny had me going 😂
Thank you Clay for your expertise and your wire recommendation. I appreciate it.
I wrap the eye portion around a small stick twice to form the eye. The stick provides leverage for making the securing wraps tight as well as making a perfect eye.
I have snares, connibears, foot holds, and dog proof traps. I ordered the damn wire anyways. Smooth tutorial boss. I like your explanations.

Damn bro you really trying to get cancelled. If you're going to admit to poaching at least say that you're regretful of it. Sorry about your wife.
Fantastic bow.

I’m more concerned about you being arrested and potentially jailed for hunting with a bow in the UK… be careful

The type of wire and chin lifter is great information! Cheers!
Thanks man! I hope I never need to use this knowledge as I am living in the burbs…but, good to know. Congratulations on being the last in season 8!
These are great videos... I noticed how the rabbits but the vegetation at a 45 angle like you said in your other videos

Thanks for showing us how this essential skill is done. I wish it was legal in my state.

Good idea on the fluorescent colored boxers cut up for flagging 😁👍
Love snaring have done alot of it in the past iv had some success. Have found fence lines are great and in the jumps in crops work well too
Also rabbits don't always die because of the snare. Some times you need to give the a love tap or pull the neck.

I've never attempted wire for a beaver but I think you could triple it up and make it into a drowning set with good results.

On Cable Snares for Beaver they recommend a Sliding Lock to maintain the tension. A Trappers Supply will have them for DIY, or completed.

You're actually not supposed to clip off any extra wire on your first circle You leave a little extra for a fur catch.
another great video, been trying this type of snare on my land but no luck. thanks for some new ideas. Hope I win the Alone sweeps it would be cool to talk to you

We used to use picture wire ( brass multi wire ) with the steel core taken out. Also a more pear shaped loop, foot snares too.
Good idea, even for in town.😉👍 An air rifle works pretty good too😉👍.

I found too if there's a hobby shop nearby for arts an crafts you can buy spools of wire cheeper than rolls of snare wire an you get alot more wire
From a group discussing of Alone members on the Dr.s utube channel they could snare beaver but wasn't sure how to go about it.
