As always, you don't disappoint with your reactions! I love how you dissect songs, it's so interesting to someone who doesn't have a lot of experience in songwriting.
Seeing a new notification from you reacting to a Rammstein song makes me jump a little in happiness each time, not gonna lie. :)
Rammstein is just one big unit. They work together so well - and amazing songs and performances are what we fans get out of it. ^^
Seemann indeed is about loss, at least from what I have heard and thought myself. Isn't it amazing how they manage to convey meaning even when you don't understand the lyrics?
I'm already looking forward to every last one of your upcoming Rammstein reactions!

Rammstein ballads are special songs. Very deep and sensual, very interesting musically. Seemann, Ohne Dich, Nebel, Amour (my favorite Ramm song ever!), Frühling in Paris, Klavier, Roter Sand, Wilder Wein

@@ukriroutalempi5124 Ohne Dich, Fruhling in Paris and Roter Sand just gut punch me every time, but I love them so much. As with the others of course, but recently I have been feeling the need to go back and almost start over. I think partly because I don't speak German, but in the 20+ years I have been following Rammstein the resources available to translate and interpret music, learn the lyrics and meaning and cultural context etc. And obviously in 20+ years I have obviously been through a lot, and I am now at roughly the age that Rammstein were when they suddenly seemed to explode in popularity, around the time of Mutter being released I think, what was that, 2000? 2001? (It's 5am and I haven't slept yet, brain don't work good). I don't know, I just want to go back and sort of relearn everything. Seeing other people discover these amazing tracks for the first time, idk.

Here are the english lyrics, from herzie.com
    "Come in my boat
    a storm is rising
    and it is becoming night
Where do you want to go
    so completely alone
    you are drifting away
    Who will hold your hand
    when it pulls
    you under
Where do you want to go
    so boundless
    the cold sea
    Come in my boat
    the autumn wind holds
    the sails taut
Now you are standing by the lantern
    with tears in your face
the daylight falls on the side
the autumn wind sweeps the streets clear
Now you are standing by the lantern
you have tears in your face
the evening light chases away the shadows
time stands still and it becomes autumn
    Come in my boat
    longing will be
    the helmsman
    Come in my boat
    the best seaman
    was I
Now you are standing by the lantern
you have tears in your face
you take the fire from the candle
time stands still and it becomes autumn
They only spoke of your mother
only the night is so merciless
at the end I am left alone
    time stands still
    and I am cold"

Rammstein bassist Oliver Riedel celebrates his birthday today, 11 April. He turns 52 years old. The most modest, patient and, perhaps, a closed member of the German team. The song "Seemann" is one of his most memorable works in the band.

Great review - you nailed it with your musical understanding. If it comes to lyrics - even for a native german speaker it is difficult to interpret the song. Generally, it is a sad song about someone, who offers his "boat" to protect someone in the boarderless sea - a beloved one . I think, it is about a father, who is losing his daughter "to the world" - suffering, experiencing the hard live on her one - while he, in the past, her youth, was the harbor for her, the seaman in the sea of her youthful life. What many commentators miss is the reference to Marlene Dietrich - Lili Marleen - "under the lantarn". It is clearly there. It has the same sadness-factor musically and refers to a woman, suffering for love.

This is the best song of their first album in my opinion. Even after their second one this one's the best for me. There are many many comments about the song's meaning and links to the lyrics, so I won't do this for this one.. It means really much to me.
It's quite funny that you say you don't know what they say, so you've got much room for interpretation. It is the same when you know German. The lyrics are sometimes even for Native Germans hard to interpret right. Especially since the band barely speaks about them. This is probably on of the reasons I love them so much: The music sounds great and the lyrics go into a certain direction, but can mean something totally different to each person. This is the case with many songs by other artists also, but Rammstein somehow made each of their songs very unique in the musical and the lyrical way. Only artist I like every song by.
Ah, before I forget: Translating the title really shouldn't "spoil" your reaction. You could do not song in English then ^^ I'd even like you looking up the background, but if there are so many who don't like this, it's totally fine for me.
If you are interested for you own "reading pleasure at your leisure" this website has some nice background story, performance and music video descriptions and translated lyrics: rammstein.fandom.com/wiki/Seemann
There still are some rather bad translations, but it really isn't easy to translate Rammstein, since they play with and on words and use German idioms. The lyrical meaning cannot be translated.
    Have an awesome weekend!

great reaction, as usual, love your analysis^^ the bassist spotlight!! the driving force of bass in Rammstein songs shouldn't be underestimated, and if i remember correctly, the melody of this song was Oliver's personal idea, and it works so well, despite being the sonic outlier from the rest of their songs from the first album)) (the atmospheric ballad from the band specifically set out to play very dark monotonous electronic tunes? in concept sounds weird, but it turned out to be one of their fan-favourites!!) i would suggest, not for the reaction, but for your personal enjoyment to check out their early performances of this, say, from 1996, and compare how Till's voice had changed and evolved^^

Lots of people have different ideas of what the songs means, but to me the songs is about loneliness, and the unfortunate reality of the life of loneliness, and the name (Seemann) meaning sailor hints to this, with sailors having a pretty lonely life, either that or I believe this song is about someone going away and not coming back, and you have to deal with the reality you’ll never see them again… this song is helping me through rough times, but it was the first rammstein song I heard that I liked, it’s my favorite song by them,

As for the meaning of the song - you were pretty close. It's about regret, despair, maybe loss of a loved one. In the music video the band is pushing a boat in the sand. according to the official making of, they are "tugging away love" but no matter how hard they try, it wouldn't move. As it is with many Rammstein songs, you can intrepret it in many different ways :).

They are some key parts in the lyrics. These give some clues about the possible meaning. There are parts about lonliness, and hints about leaving a person. "So very alone, you drift away
    | Who will hold your hand | When it pulls you under?
Them about sex: Get in my boat | Longing becomes the helmsman.
About the gone: Get in my boat
Yet I was The best sailor (I sailed the best / one you / with you? Meaning of sex)
And again about leaving or a deathwish to the sailor /seaman - With tears running down your face
    | You take fire from the candle. In Germany there is a supersition about taking fire for a cigarette from a candle -> eyerytime when a person did so a seaman dies. If she know the sailor, so she possible have the wish that he dies.
The only part that ist not clear to me is the part about the mother - I have almost no clue what he could mean. | They only spoke of your mother | What happens with the mother and who are they?

My interpretation is about a divorce or a split, because of the line "Jetzt stehst Du da an der Laderne, has Tränen im Gesicht " (Now you stand at the lantern with tears in your eyes). @@andreagruber5813 You know the saying that when someone lights a cigarette on a candle, that a sailor dies? This comes from the time when sailors on land earned extra money by making matches. Till makes an allusion here when he sings, "The fire you take from the candle, the time stands still and it becomes night." On the one hand, this speaks to the issue of smoking, and on the other hand, this is associated with death. With the video, as so often, a false trail is laid. It should also be noted that in the early days of the band, she had little say in the videos.

Hopefully that link works for you. It's from the same album but totally different vibes and taking it back to a 90's show. Great energy and it's a jam. Lyrics are a little gross but eh it's Rammstein. :)

I'm not a lyrics guy. I don't interpret lyrics, they go right over my head. So rather than waste my time trying to grasp the lyrics which I'm not good at, I focus my energies on what I am good at which is focusing on the instrumentation and songwriting. Therefore I play to my strengths, instead of my weaknesses.

Till's texts cannot be translated just like that. Always double meaning, always poetic, always with play around words, always "weird". My mother tongue is German and I don't dare to say what this song really means now. Sailor, it sure isn't. It is more about a failed relationship with a thirst for revenge...... MAYBE
