    My take on Matt Damon’s character is that he was basically too ashamed of his cowardice to admit what he did, so instead of telling them his planet isnt it he planned to abandon them and go on to the next planet (the planet where brand ended up) to finish the mission himself.

    • @LockeNarshe
      @LockeNarshe 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Half-right, half-wrong. He was ashamed and that's why he admitted to Cooper (and thus, the audience) that he faked the data after resisting calling for help for years, but only did so because he knew he was about to kill Cooper. With the other "prospects" attainable (i.e. not having to worry about the people back on earth at all), his plan was to fake a story to the rest of the crew about Cooper's death--due to unforeseen dangers of the planet--and move on to other prospects where a colony could be formed.
      If you remember, he was careful to let the crew know that life there was "possible", but would take a LOT of work to make it inhabitable--leaving the door open to leave it for another after the Cooper's "tragedy". His plan failed because it was forced into action early when A) Cooper said he was taking the Endurance home (after learning 'Plan A' was a sham), thus dooming the human race and B) Romilly began poking around his data despite being told not to. Dr. Mann was always bound to 'Plan a'.
      You'll notice he pauses when he hears Cooper's transmission. That's the realization that his cover is blown and now EVERYONE has to be marooned.

    • @Asterisk94
      @Asterisk94 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@LockeNarshe maybe. I always figured he would have marooned them all there anyway. But that could be wrong.

    • @the1gladiator2
      @the1gladiator2 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Asterisk94 The reason Mann lied is because Cooper told doctor Mann that he was returning back to Earth. Going to another planet wasn't an option. Mann however remained committed to plan B, even if his self preservation was paramount. You can see this in a lot of the dialogue. Dr Mann stated "their case is hopeless, we are the future". And "I'm taking control of the Endurance and then we can talk about completing the mission", "I want to save all of us", "this is not about my life, or Cooper's life, this is about all mankind".
      Dr Mann knew he was a coward, but he rationalized his cowardice "You were never tested like I was. Few men have been".
      Also him stating "We can care deeply - selflessly - about those we know, but that empathy rarely extends beyond our line of sight" is very revealing. That was also his internal struggle. Also his conversation about "fear of death being an inspiration" and him confessing that he "thought he was prepared to die".
      His character is exceptionally well written. They also stated in the movie that Mann was "the best of us". He's not the bad guy, remember that he was on a mission to safe the human race. It wasn't shame that drove him, just his survival instinct primary and a dedication to complete his mission secondary.
      "The survival instinct. That's what drove me. It's what drives all of us. And it's what's gonna save us. Cause I'm gonna save all of us"

    Mann and the other original astronauts were sent to explore the systems on the otherside of the wormhole before cooper’s team, each astronaut in mann’s team were given the instructions that they would each check their respectively assigned planets for potential habitability. If the planet was not habitable they would be resigned to their fates of dying on it. “Hence the bravery.” Mann evidently was not brave enough to accept that fate. He put out a positive signal letting cooper’s crew know that his planet was hapitable (even though it wasnt) he knew that if they knew he had lied and wasted their resources in order to come and rescue him and risked the fate of humanity as a whole by missleading their mission that they would likely be less inclined to save him from his fate. He made the decision that he would rather save himself and contend with the consequences of his actions which proved to be folly. He likely was a little out of his mind after a 25+ year wait for someone to come rescue him. So he attempted to maroon them and in his attempt killed himself. He probably would have just been better off being honest with them right away about the planet. I personally doubt they would have left him especially considering the fact that he could replace doyle’s position in their crew…

    What Matt Damon wanted to do? Survive. Just survival instinct. If he didn't do this (lie to them, that his planet is suitable for living on), he would just die, because they would never fly to his planet just to save one person. They would have more important stuff to do (save the species).
    I don't think his character is supposed to be shown as an evil by any means. He is just.. a human. Weak, selfish.. human, who just wanted to survive by any means. And we should not forget, that he was a hero who volunteered to fly alone into the unknown through a wormhole with a high chance of never returning or dying on the road. It's the same person!
    I suppose the main role of this character is to show us that even a brave hero could become weak and "evil" in extreme conditions (alone, hopeless, didn't seen any other human in years). Probably, these conditions did bad things to his mind too.

      Same. I never quite understood the implications of it, and mostly I thought it was just the love between murph and cooper. However, initially Brand wants to go to Edmonds planet, which we find out later is their new home. However at the time they didn’t know love was the key. So if they would have believed that connection as quantifiable they never would have went to Dr Manns planet.

    8:22 to answer your question on why Dr Mann would do such a thing, He was stuck on that planet in cryo-sleep for 10 plus years. Just before he broke Cooper's helmet, he said he was so desperate to press the button to signal the professor that the planet he was on was safe. Which it wasn't, hence why he called for help because "Cooper wasn't tested like he was" for those 10 years

    Takes a few watches to really appreciate this classic as there is so much filmaking beauty to take in as well as some mindbending concepts. Prof Brand secretly believed that Plan A was impossible as there was no way to obtain the data he needed from the other side of the black hole to complete his equations. He was unaware of the tesseract that future humans would create that did un fact allow Cooper to send the required data back to Murphy across spacetime. The only reason he came up with two plans was to gain Government backing for whole project - knowing that Plan B would not be as motivating as it only saved the human embryos on board the ships and not the population back on earth. That's why he apologised to Murphy on his death bed for lying to her. He sent her father away believing he would never be able to come back. As it turns out, thanks to the data he passed to Murphy over spacetime through the tesseract she solved his equations allowing the creation and launch of the likes of Cooper Station so saving the populace on Earth.

    Some people explained it for the most part but to be a little more clear about Dr. Mann.
    He wanted to complete the mission but he knew they wouldn't trust him after lying about his planet. Cooper was planning on taking the ship back to earth but that would doom the human race since they couldn't colonize on Dr. Mann's planet. So Dr. Mann stole the ship from them. Most likely after talking things out, they would eventually push on to Edmund's planet as the last resort...but...he blew up trying to board the Endurance.

    Q1: Why Dr. Mann did what he did?
    A: With Dr. Mann they were trying to simulate the extreme form of space dementia a hypothetical symptom that leads to craziness, disorentation, loneliness and loss of hope causing him to do stupid things also accompanied by his perception that man kind if headed for extinction.
    Q2: Could earth have really been saved?
    A: Nope, the phenomenon that was occuring on earth is a natural phenomenon and no human being could possibly reverse it. In the movie, earth was dying and therefore, the professor was right on that point. But the fact that he said he left the people on earth to die had to do with him not able to have the science to get Cooper station up and running, that needed a different kind of science to which they show the answer to that was probably within the black hole.
    Q3: What was Cooper trying to do?
    A: Technically, Cooper was trying to save Dr. Brandt by sacrificing himself and using the immense gravity of the black hole to sling shoot them out and get them to exit the black holes immense gravitational pull. Although, there might have been a plan to get them back, that part probably did not lead them anywhere, as you can see Dr. Brandt had found a planet outside the black hole's pull to survive.
    In Real Science: Honestly, all is this like playing chicken with something as big or a million times bigger than the sun 😁. Black holes by far are the most destructive and powerful entities in the universe with immense gravitations pull (yeah the same thing that makes that ball fall of your desk) and Cooper would have been pulled apart and ripped into shreds much before he could get into it with temperatures over a million kelvin. I mean this thing eats stars and solar systems for brunch!
    The movie and the story is basically trying to communicate to us all the practical science behind general relativity in terms of time, space, gravity, the black hole and its dehumanising yet amazing feeling of the unknown.

    There’s something very special about the Dads promise. I hope to be able to make and keep as many promises to any children I may have in the future.. to show up and be there when they need me. I want my children to have the same faith that Murph had. “Because my Dad promised me.”

    Dr. Mann had to click a button that sent out a signal that said “hey this world is good come here”. His world was not hospitable but due to cowardice and loneliness he pressed that button anyways. He wanted to be the savior, he didn’t want to die alone. He says, “I never even considered that my world wouldn’t be the one”. He wants to kill Coop and strand Brand on the shitty planet so he can go to one of the good ones and finish the mission, with out Brand and Coop outing him as a liar and coward, tarnishing his reputation.

    When they were talking with Dr. Brandt (Ann Hathaway) about not being able to go back, it was because they lost too much fuel with the maneuvers in the first planet, so they had to choose, they could not go to all the remaining planets and go back to Earth with the fuel left.
    When they were talking about Professor Brandt not being able to save Earth, he could not solve the equations without knowing the quantum configuration inside a singularity (like a black hole), so he thought it did not make sense for the mission to return to Earth because he thought there was no future.
    Cooper got the data coded for his daughter to solve the equations and then was sent from inside the Tesseract to nearby Jupiter by the future beings/future humans.
    I hope I'm answering your questions, and not just pointlessly re-stating the details of the movie, lol!

    Mann took the ship because he thought Cooper was going to go back home once he realized Plan A was a lie. Mann wanted to complete the mission and his being alone for so long - I guess talking it out was out of the question for him.

    if you're still wondering about Dr. Mann, so there are the small ship, and the big one. The big one is the one spinning and shaped like a circle. The small ones are the one Cooper and Mann use to fly around.
    So the thing is, if you want to travel far, you need that big ship. So Mann knows that he's planet isn't the one, right? So in order to continue the mission to go to the next planet, they will need the big ship. The thing is, Cooper and crew didn't know yet Mann's planet isn't the one, so they let Cooper go home, which will require the big ship.
    Then Mann told Cooper, he can't leave, because this planet isn't the one, they still need that big ship to continue the mission. So he tried to kill Cooper and then take the big ship so Cooper can't go home. I think that sumps up the whole thing that you don't understand.

    Dr. Mann was probably a bit out of his mind. Having spent upwards of 40 or more years on that planet alone. (He didn't look that old because he spent a lot of that time in his cryo sleep device, presumably slowing his body functions so that he would not age too much) . You could say in the story that he represents the darker side of man's survival instinct.
    As to his plan, he definitely sabotaged his own robot to explode, should anyone try to tamper with it and find out what he was really up to there, and that he probably had all these recordings proving that his planet was inhospitable, but that he sent the signal to be rescued anyway. He stole one of the scout ships and i would guess that his next move was to take control of the Endeavor and either abandon his rescue crew on his planet, or convince them to follow his lead before allowing them to come aboard, and then they would make their way somewhere else, not Earth, maybe one of the other prospect planets to carry out plan B. Which was to start human civilization over again with the human embryos on the Endeavor.
    But, like most plans, there was something he did not account for, a change in the docking procedures, and it went wrong, to disaster.

    Had to watch it twice at the theater to get stuff I missed ( Murph was the lady talking about the dust). Mann was stranded, alone no hope on that planet. Now he had a way to get out of there, just get away, anywhere is better than there.

    Dr. Mann wanted to continue plan B on the next planet. Cooper was worried about the people on earth, but Mann just wanted to complete the mission. His actions were a mix of cowardice/self preservation , selflessness in the form of wanting to make sure humanity survives via plan B, and selfishness because he wanted to be the one who saved humanity.
    At least that is my take. I quite like the writing of his character.

    Matt Damon’s character got stranded on that dead planet. After years of isolation he went to sleep but first sent out fake data to earth so they would send Coop and crew to him so he wouldn’t be alone/have a chance to leave. When he gets found out, he tries to kill Coop and take off with Coop’s ship presumably anywhere because there’s nothing on the frozen planet.
    Hope that explains things.
