Ok I’ve just read that spincycle dyed in the wool and dreamstate are superwash. Nocturne is nonsuperwash! However I successfully spit splice with all of it. 🤔 sorry for the misinformation! 😂

I so appreciate this video and these suggestions! I love Spincycle and have been fortunate to use some in my projects. However, it’s not possible for me to use it in everything I make, and I think that’s the case for a lot of people! Knowing that there are good alternatives out there that will produce a similar effect will definitely tackle some more projects on my list of things to make.

I love Andrea Mowry 's Spincycle colour shifting patterns but have been intimidated by the uncertainty of the results of the finished garment. Not to mention the cost of a piece that I might not love. This video helped put things in perspective and I really appreciate the suggestions for more affordable yarn substitutions. I would be interested in seeing projects you might create using Spincycle substitutes and hear your thoughts in comparing the differences.
Thank you for your entertaining videos. I really appreciate the production value and all the effort you put into them.

Thanks for sharing Kaci! I made a Nightshift for my bestie back in 2021 using 3 different colours of Noro Silk Garden (8 balls total). At $18 CAD a ball the total cost was approximately $136 CAD - not exaclty cheap but less than half the price of Spincycle. Seeing your beautiful shawl is REALLY making me want to cast on another one for myself! 😍

Thank you so much for your list of affordable yarn substitutions! The current inflation rate in the European Union is more than 11 percent ... so "life is hard" ... For example the purchase price for butter in Austria is 77 percent more expensive than at the beginning of 2022 ... Energy prices are rising continuously. So I am really appreciative of your suggestions! Btw: Your shawl is gorgeous! Loving it! 😍

you're editing is just as beautiful as the yarn!! You kept talking about the limoncello yellow and I was like what is she talking about??? It's gorgeous....but then you mentioned the cross stitch you did and I was like oh....that's cause she fixed it! looks so beautiful and I'm 100% ready to check out these alternatives. I joined the farmer's daughter sock sock club and that's all I could do. I couldn't imagine investing in a sweater's quantity for a plus sized woman with yarn I've never tried before. But these alternatives? a great way to test patterns and techniques with color shifting yarn, Kind of wish I had known about these before I started my bougie sweater! Great video!!

I really, really appreciate you sharing some alternate yarn options to Spin Cycle. I recently bought the Shiftigan pattern and had a bit of sticker shock when looking at the cost of the kits. I’m excited to explore some of these other options and make the color palette my own ❤

I do (even with the price tag) think Spincycle trumps many of these suggestions and I say that ONLY after working with the other & Rios for the Nightshift Shawl. Rios made it VERY heavy, and it didn't relax like Spincycle to get that comfy, cozy feel.. So while I loved the RIOS colors, it was later gifted. The Zauberball(? spelling, lol) isn't as soft so you do get a little more itch with it.
I feel you on her original colors... I bought the same ones and mine felt like a Cold Water Creek Shawl,. hated it and ripped it out.. I do think there's some photo adjustment in that photo because I've not seen those colors replicated. Wool and Co is great, they're fast, the team is what gives that store heart.
I thought this was a great video. I too lol'd at the toy car comment. Spot on. haha! all the best! Kimberly

I commented earlier but don’t see it here…. Trying again! I wanted to suggest Patons Kroy - I think it’s the FX line? As a sub for Spincycle. It’s also a sport weight close enough to fingering and you can find it at the big box craft stores like Joann’s and Michael’s

I just wanted to mention that some Spincycle yarns are superwash. Their website says the nocturne base isn’t but dyed in the wool is superwash.
My addition to the reccomendations is Feederbrook Farm Entropy DK. It’s only slightly more affordable at $28/260 yards, but it’s a great option if it’s in your budget!

Great content, Kaci! The first project I used Spincycle on was the shifty cowl. It turned out nice, I get lots of compliments, however as I was knitting, like you, there are sections I really don't like. Fortunately it ended up in the back of my neck so I don't need to see it while wearing. I have made two cowls since as gifts and used Malabrigo Rios and loved how they turned out. I also made the Shifty 2, top down pullover and again I used Rios as a base and went stash diving using fingering held double and I love it. I get more compliments on that sweater. Currently an ongoing long term project is an Afghan that uses the same technique and again I'm using Rios. This blanket is turning out beautifully and will be toasty warm for Michigan's cold winters. I guess I don't like to gamble much with surprise and want more control.

Kaci, I really enjoy every single one of your intros, changing lettering and styles - it looks like you have a lot of fun with it 😎 and the effect is stunning, too! When it comes to hand dyed yarns I really do love them in colour work socks! Spincycle as such is not very accessible here in Poland, but we have quite a few small dyeing businesses that offer some extraordinary colour ways 🤩

Kaci - thanks for addressing the elephant in the room, which is Spincycle yarns is out of budget for most of us. The pattern market is oversaturated with color changing yarn use right now, in my opinion, and they all seem to use Spincycle brand. I love supporting them, their employees, and their business model whenever I can, however it cannot cover the number of Andrea Mowry pattern releases that use Spincycle brand! Thanks for sharing alternatives, I love the Rios idea, I used the Volcan colorway for my Inclinations cowl, along with another stash yarn.

I used Schoppel for a pair of socks for my boyfriend. They are amazing: the colours are still so bright - even after many rounds of machine wash. And they are hard wearing to. No visible pilling or felting. I can highly recommend them - and they are quite affordable in Germany, where I live.

I LOVE color shifting yarn! But I am a crazy color knitter for all of my projects, including garments. My fave color shifting yarn is the Entroy DK from Feederbrook farm. Its a 2 ply non superwash BFL, and so far Ive made many knitted items with it, including a brioche tank top and brioche tunic, a brioche raglan cropped sweater, Andrea Mowry's Trinigan, and JamesNWatts Beads Of Love top, which is modular knitting. For the brioche projects I love pairing the Entropy DK with a brushed suri alpaca yarn for that fluff airy softness. I appreciate the reccomendations for these more commercial, less expensive options too, thanks!

Great save on the limoncello to lemon mellow! I love color shifting yarn for blankets. I've done a couple jelly roll blankets that look scrappy . . . . but no ends to weave in! Also, if I EVER knit another Sea Glass sweater I would DEFINITELY use a color shifting yarn . . . . those ends were RIDICULOUS . . . . but I live in it, so it was worth it. Love your show.

I really appreciate this video and information, I love to knit for relaxation although I’m not super experienced with all the yarns available these days I knit on a budget and find I’m often disappointed at the cost of the beautiful yarn and then it’s like going down a rabbit hole trying to find a substitute yarn that will do justice to the design, my lack of knowledge with how a yarn will perform with a specific design also leaves me at a dead end. Thank you for this content I would love more yarn talk and comparisons to help me on my knitting journey.

Great topic! I’ve used Stonehedge Fiber Mill’s “Crazy” yarn for the Shift and Nightshift. It’s 100% merino, two-ply sport weight. 230 yards for $14.50. I love the look of Spincycle, but I don't know if I could ever justify the price. A single skein of Dyed in the Wool or Dream State is over $40 CAD and the yardage you get, compared to other dyers and brands, makes it really hard to justify the cost. Also they're only available at 4 yarn stores in all of Canada, and I don't think I'd want to buy this kind of color-shifting yarn without being able to see it in person first. I do love hand dyed yarn and supporting local dyers and indie dyers, and I do work a lot with yarn from local indie dyers 😊
Also I just recently found your channel and have been having a lovely time catching up on your older videos ❤️

I totally get what u r explaining. We r not robots of color or substance. I've been YT to learn knitting and saw many sites go ga-ga over the Nightshift shaw. Ugh! Couldn't accept it. First the color did not do it for me. Secondly, the price was out of budget. I noticed ur vlog background was earthy colors. I have no clue what my fav colors r. I'm trying to learn color techniques. Because I do like bright but it has to b toned down w dark colors. So making the right combo is important if I'm spending $$$ on yarns. Thanks for sharing.

The Ewetopia yarn shop in Viroqua, Wi has beautiful color-changing yarns. They opened a mill in La Farge I believe. I bought mine there in 2017/2018 while on vacation. They have the sheep and the whole shebang. Great shop and very nice people! They have online shopping.Cheryl

Another color changing yarn I've bought is from Feederbrook Farms. They have a DK wt, BFL, 2 ply "Entropy" yard that sells for $28 for 260 yds. I haven't knit much with it yet but hope to some day. They also sell 'Millends' too. I believe it's non-superwash. Thanks for sharing with us. Always fun.

I am on my second Nightshift shawl made with Malabrigo Rios. I love this yarn. Lovely colors and it is soft and squishy.

This is a great video--thank you! I used the Cascade Heritage Wave from Wool and Co for the Inclinations cowl, went up 1 needle size and it worked perfectly--squishy and lovely. I am using the Wueensland Collection Rainbow beach (from same store) for the Shift cowl and it's a great substitute in my humble opinion. One day, will treat myself to Spincycle. I love your cross stitching over to mute the colors--amazing!

This came at such a perfect time! I’ve been dreaming of making the Nightshift but wasn’t sure what other yarn options there were! Thank you!

I did a shift cowl using spincycle. I found one maybe two other cowls on Ravelry using the same colors I chose. They all look completely different.

Thank you. That was helpful. Zauberballs are insanely fun. I look forward to knitting with ones I recently purchased.
I'd like to suggest Simply Socks Yarn Company out of Fort Wayne, Indiana, as a great online shop. I purchase from them online and in person. It's full of wonderful choices, so you might enjoy checking them out.

I have used Spincycle Dyed in the Wool a couple of times. It’s lovely but you’re right, it’s definitely a treat yourself yarn. I have used Cascade 220 Wave in place of Dreamstate and I’m giving the Schopple Edition 3 a try to make a second Shift Cowl.
