Walks in Shropshire: Exploring Grinshill Hill

Harriet and I are climbing the 630 feet of Grinshill Hill in north Shropshire. The hill has been quarried for its remarkable sandstone since the 12th century and some of the stone has been used to dress the door frame of Number 10 Downing Street.
The walk takes us through beautiful woodland dusted with snow and the views from the top are impressive.

Grinshill Hill is another one of these prominent Triassic red sandstone outcrops that occur in North Shropshire/Cheshire plain, which protrude a predominantly open low lying landscape. It's a magnificent viewpoint, and like most of these promontories, are notable for having clusters of Caledonian pine clinging to the rocks amongst other trees, which are probably the vestiges of the great ancient forest that covered the landscape between the end of the glacial period and the farming clearances during the Bronze Age. It's also the home to Ravens which sit in their branches surveying the fileds below and calling, a bird more commonly seen in upland areas.

Number 10 - interesting fact that Richard. I’ll keep eye next time it’s on the news. But these days to be honest I prefer to be out walking and watching YT vids - than watching the news. ATVB Mark.
I am watching more indie stuff on YT than the TV. I don't have a TV and barely watch the iplayer. Not sure why I pay for the license fee - although I do love Radio 4 - although it is a bit biased.

It was indeed birch (there are two native species in GB) on the left as you passed the oak. It will soon be time to tap the sap for wine if one is so inclined. Yes, you do need a car to get about in Shropshire. I am back up that way next week!
Great. That view was definitely worth the climb. Did the path continue down the hill on the other side? Could you have kept going to go down to the farms and houses?
vintagecreativemedia The path swept round and probably head down towards the village on the other side called Clive.

Its ages ago now, but you kind of got lost on the way up. There's a better way which takes you past some amazing mullioned houses built against the rock and takes in the church with interesting memorial stones, then past the school high up on the rock. The path up is cut into the rock.
Still you both obviously enjoyed it saw THE VIEW and all ways up are good 😊
