- The bodies of two people have been recovered from a red pickup truck in the waters where the Baltimore bridge collapsed.
An operation to recover the bodies of four more people presumed dead continues, after a container ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday.
The two victims have been named as 35-year-old Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, of Baltimore, and 26-year-old Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera of Dundalk.

The bridge was completed in 1977 meeting standards for that period in time. The cargo ship was just under 1,000 feet long, weighed over 1 million tons and traveled at 8 knots. Not many structures could handle that hard of an impact. Traveled the Francis Scott Key bridge often and it's a mile and a half long.

Why is the relative talking about the family all travelling for visas instead of how much they loved and will miss the poor guy who died? That seems a really odd thing to say, like "oh, we can't all come there now" rather than "he was a much loved husband/son/father/brother and we will miss him very much" or words to that effect. Maybe its shock but its a really weird thing to say when your relative just had a tragic accident.
He was just saying that he was a good guy, trying to lift as many members of his family out of poverty as possible. He wasn’t saying it in a “Oh no my meal tickets gone” way.

Because the deceased achieved so much for his family, probably made great sacrifices and improved so many of their lives so much, maybe even saved lives. It was a reflection of who he was, his determination and spirit. At least that’s what I heard. He probably said a lot more but the news only chose this small section of the interview.

Why those workers were not alerted after mayday signal?
Bridge collapses from being hit by a ship are rare but they do happen. On the 27 of February 2024, a empty cargo ship hit the bridge supports of the Lixinsha Bridge in southern China. The bridge collapsed and two vehicles fell into the water and three other vehicles landed on the ship. Five were killed and one crew member was injured.
In the past, there have been bridge disasters. The Tasman Bridge in Australia was hit by a ship and the bridge fell on top of the ship killing seven crew members and five motorists died from dropping 150ft into the water below. The supports of the Bold Street Bridge in Sydney Australia, were not hit by a ship but by a train. As the train approached the bridge it became derailed and slammed into the bridge supports. The bridge collapsed on top of the train killing 83 people and injured more than 200 others.
Bridge was named after Francis Scott (1779-1843), the author of the lyrics to the American national anthem: "The Star-Spangled Banner"... it's like shit on the national anthem!!!

They were on the middle span, under the higher arch to the right of the ship impact in this view.
It’s mental the ship (without power etc.) smashed full-on into one of the pillars. 20 metres either way and a catastrophe may have been averted.

its semantics (the way something was worded) they probably meant that it was taken from the ship, like if someone asks you to grab something from their room, you might say you found the thing when you grab it, the thing was never truly lost, but you personally didn't know exactly where it was, you were told however where it was.

The ship was being driven by two port captains. There was power flickering on and off and an explosion of smoke out the smoke stack. Does anyone know how hard it is to turn a ship that's longer than a football field?

they can build a temporary bridge and block the port or they can remove the bridge and open lanes to ports. but they cant do both at the same time.
Right now they can't do neither. First priority will be to open a shipping lane, and get the container ship out of the way before the next storm. I'm not sure why they haven't started setting up cranes, but probably they need to bring in equipment up for the job, perhaps from the Netherlands.

These huge ships should have tug boats guiding them out of port and around bridges to prevent this!
They did but the tugs left them and returned to port just before it happened.

The ship has insurance so it should have to pay for all damages including total damages.
Only the damages from destroying the bridge. The damages from one accident blocking the port and how long it may take to getting the collapsed bridge out of the water are different questions. This had been calculated through before, and evaluated as not worth the cost of implementing the new standards, or mandating tugboats.
Those families affected, first and foremost!

I don't think any bridge is built to withstand a 95000 ton hit
In my opinion as a Master Mariner and Marine Pilot this accident could have been avoided if Master of ship and Pilots onboard allowed ship to maintain the speed of about 8kt's instead of slowing vessel down when power was restored x2 onboard ship. Ship would of passed under bridge at 8kt's. There was only light wind early in the morning so windage would not have affected the ship to a large degree. The slowing down of the ship caused the bow(front) of ship to veer to starboard(right hand side) thus causing the ship to collide with bridge foundation support. There was not enough distance from ship when it lost power to the bridge to safely stop the ship before the bridge. Best option in this scenario forget about dropping anchor and trying to slow down using engine. Rather focus on trying to maintain ship in navigation channel when power was restored x2 and with the speed of about 8kt's it would quickly pass under bridge. Once passed under bridge then drop both anchors to slow down ship and use astern engine movements to reduce speed when power back on. The natural thing to do is to reduce speed as fast as possible to soften any collision or grounding which might happen, however in this case it appeared to be the wrong decision.

I think that's what they tried to achieve but the distance to the bridge was too short and the ship was having too much momentum, both forwards and sidewards, so the anchor was just dragged along

They know why the ship lost power it has had this defect for some time. The ship was on charter to Maersk and contrary to International maritime law Maersk insist that crews must report defects to them before notifying the authorities. They have been warned about this illegal policy in the past because it allows Maersk to mitigate or cover up potentially dangerous faults or conditions onboard vessels.
Looking forward to Transport Safety Board's investigation report. We must learn from it so that such accident may never happen again. RIP deseased!!

Cost. Cost and availability of tugboats. Tugboats would slow down going in and out of the port, that would result in higher shipping costs. Hitting a bridge, on the other hand, is covered by insurance.

I don't think many of the construction crew spoke English. An officer managed to get one of the crew off the bridge. They had to run, no time to get those who fell with the bridge. I live in MD. I appreciate your news channel.

the ship was inspected in japan and in the US by the US coast guard. And knowing how strict the coast guard guidelines are ,i doubt there's room for corruption here.
