Waiting until insurance companies "sort it out" could take a decade or more. Congress needs to front the money for rebuilding now. Ban the ship's owner and operator from US ports until restitution is made.

Those cars now have to be taken to NY, and then auto trained back to Baltimore to be certified. Places like Norfolk are taking the over flow. You know, we just sent billions overseas, we can do it for a US bridge used by US citizens.

Much of the mass is from the crumbled concrete and asphalt from the deck and the shattered pillars.

A bridge should be able take some pretty hefty impacts from a ship. The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco has some massive concrete pillars at the base protecting the steel work.

The bridge would still be standing if it had similar protection. The workers would still be alive and life and shipping in Baltimore would still be going on as normal. The engineers who designed and the state officials who signed off on the bridge all have blood on their hands.

The ship is sitting on a gas line with 1000;s of tons of steel bridge work on it. Also the forward containers are all filled with hazardous cargo, many are already crushed. Zero visibility underwater , strong currents and the ship is sitting on the bottom. You have no idea how dangerous it is to move a heavy load under ideal conditions never mind the conditions they are working under.

There is no way they will stay with the old design. 1) It doesn't meet modern standards with respect to redundancy of load paths. 2) Since we don't build bridges like this anymore, the savings making this best choice in the 1970s don't apply anymore. 3) There is pretty much no group involved in the selection process that won't want a more expensive bridge. Taxpayers or insurance companies won't get a vote. The new bridge will be prettier with more capacity.
@nakedluck - Good question.....Most likely they will go with a Suspension Bridge that will be up to date standards better quality and can hold more Capacity. Suspension bridges are more reliable and as technology advances they probably wont go with the old design. So yes they will bring in the top Architects and engineers to build the New key bridge that will off course have Dolphins guard barriers.
