Excellent! Thanks Cody. Reminds me of an early marital issue. First married, grabbed wifey's Singer sewing scissors and was cutting aluminum foil. She walked in and was quite passionate about instructing me that I was committing a grave mistake. I returned the passion when she would borrow my tools and leave them in the yard ..... to rust. :)
I was taught this by my Grandfather here in the uk back in the late 60s , open and close the scissor blades on a glass bottle neck , your scissors cheap or expensive will be very sharp , give it a go super fast as well 5 or 6 times will do it, great channel by the way
To remove the burr on the edges, you should slightly pull the blades apart and close them so the blades are not touching ask they close, then release the pressure and open them and this will roll the burr over to the other side of the blade. From there you can cut through something like that blue paper towel a few times and that should remove the burr cleaner without damaging the new edge you just created. The inside area you were talking about with the thin shiny line is called the ride line, where the two blades ride together as they cut. You're right though...sharpening these types of scissors you did here can be done without high dollar sharpening equipment and with a little sharpening knowledge and care, are easy enough to sharpen and maintain. The salon shears are much more expensive, starting at about $150 for a really cheap pair and quickly going up from there. These types of scissors need to be sharpened by professionals with special equipment because as you remove the metal to create a new edge at the ride line, you also need to touch up the convex edge on the opposite side and that's not something you really want to try and do with hand tools on $200+ pair of scissors. :0) Also, when sharpening scissors like this, you should occasionally take the scissors apart and sharpen all the way up under where the blades are bolted together. Without going into long detail, it basically helps keep the scissor blades properly aligned for the best cutting angle. You should really do that every time if you're OCD about the performance, but if not, every 2nd or 3rd time is better than nothing.
Very informative - so too are the comments and general observations. Removing the burr generated by working on the angled side by closing the sharpened scissors seems the best solution over possible->probable->definite compromise working on the flat side. Great history lesson. Now to find a (car) boot/trunk sale for scissors, and then buy a Lansky stone - Great plug. Many thanks.
After watching the videos and reading the comments I tackled some quality vintage scissors that would barely cut plasticine. Took quite a while as had to drill and tap the pivot to fit a new screw (no idea what the original must have been - it was mashed). They're now slicing fabric like razors - not often I actually have the right kit for the job but I do have a Lansky puck. Also gave them a tweak with my Spyderco Doublestuff. Thank you!
Scissors are easy! Glad to see the instructional video. I've rescued many old pairs. They generally are made of superior steel, and work way better than the soft stainless Chinesium substitutes. A little "tooth" from a coarser stone can be useful on the sharpened edge, to grip the material being cut.
Be careful that the blades don't get bent out of shape so they don't make contact in more than one place as the blades pass each other. If you look carefully along good scissors and shears, the blades have a very slight curve so the contact between the blades progresses along the blades as they are closed. This is what makes them cut.
Cody- you made me smile when you said while growing up and someone had a set of scissors that no one could touch.. My Mom had a set just like you said. They are now on my kitchen table. Tomorrow I think I'm going to try shaping them.
It’s one thing to know the material, and another to know how to teach it. If all my teachers had your skill in teaching, school would have been a dream for me.
I like to use just a drop of loctite 243 on the screw when I fasten it so it does not come loose. Works very well with older shears that have a tendency to loosen up in heavy use.
I just stumbled upon this video. Didn't really payed much thought to my scissors and i don't even have a vice. I do have my stones though so i just went and sharpened my scissors. Thanks for this insightful video that randomly helped me get my scissors back in shape!
I sharpened my old sewing fiskars (like the ones in your video) that 10 minutes prior would not cut fabric! I tried the fiskars first as a trial before trying to sharpen my better scissors but I'll put them back in use- Thanks for your informative video!
Thank you so much.....I’m a quilter....and bout this pair 20 years ago....paid 60.00 then so I know they are good but need a good edge. I did it.....thank you so very much!
Great! I enjoy these little tips, especially when they're the sort of thing perhaps one doesn't think about doing. I think simple techniques like this are so valuable and need to be passed on! Thanks!
Watch Wolff Industries videos on sharpening scissors. They use the machine they make in SC but the concepts can applied to hand sharpening. Tip: Once you get a burr on both blades then spread blades and close scissors so blades don’t touch. Do this a couple times. You want to knock the burr to the outside.
Hello from Finland. I remember when I was kid, in the 50’s, there were old knife and scissor’s sharpeners who used a pedalling grinding stone. Some of them sang too but that was rare. We’re not in Italy. =) . I don’t remember how they did it but those scissors were in really good shape after that. If I recall it right, they moved the blade in 90 degrees angle against the grinding stones edge. I believe that those were global. Too bad they don’t anymore exist. Scissors are too cheap to be sharpened. Anyway, I have Fiskars scissor’s sharpener which is small, very handy having two slots and hardened steel rods. You draw the blades against the rods. An old and handy trick is to use glass bottle.
I love how you always seem to really enjoy what you do, no matter what it is. And I could watch someone talk about nuclear physics and advancements in nanotechnology(though I'm not nearly smart enough to understand it) but as long as they are enjoying what they're doing its easy to enjoy it with them. That's one reason of many why I really enjoy this channel!
If you're looking for oil like that, brass instruments use a very similar, high quality oil and have the same kind of tips on their bottles. You can pick them up at any music supply store for pretty cheap
I just bought a pair of Wiltshire scissors for $2 at an op-shop, thinking Wiltshire, good brand, must be ok!. It turned out blunt as blunt can be, didn't even cut tissue paper! After a fruitless attempt to sharpen it with my little sharpening stone, I decided to try youtube. Well, I followed Wranglerstar's video as he spoke and, adapting the whet stones to what I had on hand, and Voila, a sharp as pair of scissors! Thank you Wranglerstar! (must admit, these scissors do not look like they are hollow ground.)
Yay! Just out of general principle I don't watch a video if it has a clickbait title so I miss a lot of your stuff. Very glad I was able to watch this one as it was excellent.
I had that same pair of Fiskars and the plastic snapped at one of the ring handles after a year of light use. Gone are the days of quality craftsmanship.
I have a set of those larger scissors and have been keeping them sharp for over 45 years. Brian has it right on how to sharpen any scissors, shears, anything with a cutting edge on it.
if youre grinding the flat of the blade would it be better to separate them to avoid creating a gap between the cutting edges? grind the whole length to where the pivot is? cant hurt right?
Aiden Foggin. I had the same thought but he is not removing much metal from the flat side so it would take a whole lot of sharpenings like that before it really started put a gap between the blades but yes talking them apart and removing the same amount of material from the tip all the way down that surface including where they are bolted together would probably be the best way to do that
Aiden is 100% correct sharpening scissors like this a few times will ruin the set. The mating edge develops a shiny line the objective ist to grind down an narrow this mating line. If you don't understand my words go find a Pro and pay the going rate.
Interestingly enough, I learned recently that there is a difference between scissors & shears. Those stainless Aero are scissors because the finger holes are inline with the cutting surface. Those big ones are shears because they have the finger holes at an offset from the cutting surface.
Cody, a while ago you made a video with the Edge pro knife sharpener. Then you made a video with the Tsprof knife sharpener. Which one do you think is better?
Actually a video with good ratings i don't get why this guys gets hate can someone explain i was always confused also even if some of his videos are not useful i still find them entertaining
to plow through an almost finished project, my ma would slice up an old piece of sandpaper, 150 grit, to temporarily tune up a bald hatchet. (her pet name for a dull scissor) sufficient to get a dress ready for the sewing machine. It worked! Sharpen dull needles by punching them through the same sandpaper a few times.
Hey Cody try putting a rare Earth magnet on the back of the blade your sharpening. It'll collect the chips instead of having to use a liquid. Or along with a liquid.
You could take old scissors apart and place a thin washer or shim to take the wobble. I used soda cans and water bottles if they’re to thick run them over sand paper.
Shouldn't you have dismantled the sciccors to also flatten the area around the screw abit(as much as you did the blade)? I mean, it can only tighten as far as those two flat areas go. Considering the first part when you removed the rust. Great video, thanks!
May I suggest another alternative? I've been using Smith sharpeners for a few years. While they may not give a professional edge they're certainly good enough to cut my hair with my shop shears with a dozen swipes and they keep the angle correct. I use a small one to keep my pocket multi tool in the same condition. I seldom need a razor edge but a good cutting slicing tool is ready after a dozen swipes. Takes about 30 seconds.
I use Kai 7000 series scissors at work. They cost me around 60 dollars which was a lot for me (I realize they may be cheap in comparison to some other scissors). Should I attempt to sharpen them myself or just send them in to be sharpened? They also recently got a scissor sharpener at my job though I don’t know if I trust it.
Agree that it may be required to slightly flatten the back edge of the blade. However the blade should be maintained perfectly flat on the stone as in the video. Even a little bit of rounding on the back of the blade will ruin the scissors. I typically do this step AFTER sharpening the scissors. It then performs the double task of flattening the back of the blades as necessary and also removing any burr/wire edge that has formed. You can just rip the wire edge off the blades by operating the scissors after they have been sharpened, but that's sort of rough treatment on your newly sharpened scissors.
It took a while to convince Mom to let me sharpen her antique hair cutting scissors and I'm a toolmaker! Lol They turned out sharp and she was happy with them when I was finished. I didn't think it was that bad.
Awesome video thanks for sharing. Very useful tips. BTW, What kind of watch are you wearing? Do a video on your watch. Great video thanks. I hope you have a blessed week.
I know exactly what you mean, because I know the meaning of all words. Someday, I plan to have the most famous name in dictionaries. I just hope the name “Chris’s Dictionary” catches on.
Greetings Cody! Blessings to you and your family. I have always known you to be a stickler for details. Which is why I am surprised to see you neglect to take those scissors apart! It's much safer and easier to sharpen them and does a much better job. You know better. Please don't dumb things down.
Damn, the good old days… before the brain worms started getting to him. I miss this old content, you seemed so passionate and genuinely eager to help people.
How covenient i have a very dull and old "swiss" branded pair of scissors lying around and a lanksy puck, out to the garage! Another useful video thanks!!
The scissors I have right here are the orange handle and have Finland stamped into the plastic handle the side with the notch on and they have a f with a crown above it and the year 78 opposite I presume that's the year.. Or the size?? Anyone know? I presume these are fiskys?
Thanks again for making this video ! All of your videos are great ! Well the ones that I have watched nice I want to go way back and start watching the old ones before I subscribed ! Have a happy Locktite week !
I always shudder when I see good scissors. As a child of about 9 I had the bright idea of cutting through two wire spring exhausts on my toy car with my mums dress making scissors........... she never let me forget that! Even as an adult she would tell me not to cut anything stupid with them bless her....... it’s the little things that you miss the most 😔
Fenridir omg that brought back another memory! Lol I cut open a bottle of “ice Magic” it was chocolate sauce that when you put on ice cream it went hard like on a choc ice. Anyway, in my infinite wisdom I stabbed through the bottle into the palm of my hand but as I was using the scissors ( again ) without permission I was too scared to own up to what I had done........ no wonder my mum would keep reminding me in hindsight! 😊
I cut through the electrical cord for my desk lamp when I was a few years old. Let's just say it was an interesting discovery. Mom wasn't very pleased with the spot welded scissors. I have later come to the insight that I was very lucky to cut through the neutral first.
MadModders wow someone was looking out for you on that day! I am now putting myself in your position now and imagining showing my Mum her scissors spot welded together and then the reaction 😂😂
Fenridir - Since when was there ever a "brief" visit to the emergency room? Maybe the trip there was brief, but my experience there has been hours and hours and hours; everyone I talk to says the same.
Good video. Thanks Cody. Im looking forward to seeing you get back out in the woods. Ive been working on the thick cedars around my place. Also just put my seed order in for the garden- has mrs W put her seed order in? It is garden planning time!! :-)
Please do a video on the cheap ones please, those are the ones my wife buys and they are a pain to sharpen. I sharpen all sorts of stuff around the house with no problem but there must be a trick to those things.
Dear Wrangler a little knowledge is a bad thing. Never flatten the inside surface of scissors because it'll ruin the "set", scissors are set by the factory grind and pivot bolt adjustment. The edge self-mates only sharpen the bevel and push crosswise towards the edge with a coarse diamond file. Generate a burr and it will cut off when the scissors mate. Counter intuitively scissors need grip (hence "machine marks") one pass across a 80 grit grinder will restore them. A polished edge will not grip cloth or hair.
mgreene939 if you want a good field sharpening stone, which would work for this as well, the DC4 is a great option. For a bench stones, Japanese water stones work great. I got 1000/6000 grit combo off of Amazon for about $40.
Excellent! Thanks Cody. Reminds me of an early marital issue. First married, grabbed wifey's Singer sewing scissors and was cutting aluminum foil. Correct about "tooth" but never stone the inside faces, they will mate as the burrs are trimming-off on 1st cut.
Brilliant

I thought i was the only person who loved the sound of sharp scissors...lol glad to know im not a weirdo!!
Love to sharpen scissors test them to cut right threw to the point use fabric cloth and chiffon for test material.
taking the "maching" marks out makes the edge slippery and it will push material out instead of grabbing it and holding it so the scissor can cut
I sharpened my old sewing fiskars (like the ones in your video) that 10 minutes prior would not cut fabric! I tried the fiskars first as a trial before trying to sharpen my better scissors but I'll put them back in use- Thanks for your informative video!

I had that same pair of Fiskars and the plastic snapped at one of the ring handles after a year of light use. Gone are the days of quality craftsmanship.
Paul Sellers did a very similar video on scissor sharpening last year.
Can you please restore those larger old scissors? That would be a cool vid.
Agreed! More restorations of useful tools!!
I have a set of those larger scissors and have been keeping them sharp for over 45 years. Brian has it right on how to sharpen any scissors, shears, anything with a cutting edge on it.

Those stainless steel scissors are like the Singer ones. I bought a Singer back in the 80's and still have them. Like new!!!
I am not sure how effective it is but I was told in a pinch you can always cut fine grit sandpaper or aluminium foil to help sharpen them.
I use that quite often, it isn't the best, but, as you say it works in a pinch.
That dulls them
Mark Pikas aluminium foil or sandpaper?
mavos1211 sandpaper. I doubt aluminium foil does anything, it's too soft to affect the metal.
I about ruined an extremely expensive pair of shears cutting foil. DON"T unless they are cheap! Get them professionally sharpened!
Cody, a while ago you made a video with the Edge pro knife sharpener. Then you made a video with the Tsprof knife sharpener. Which one do you think is better?
Picked up my first axe today, Gransfors small forest, you rave about it and I wanted one good axe, its a great size too
Videos like this is why I started watching your channel.
Actually a video with good ratings i don't get why this guys gets hate can someone explain i was always confused also even if some of his videos are not useful i still find them entertaining
What brand of dirt bike do you recommend for beginner who is 14 and 6 ft tall and likes going fast
I do auto upholstery for a living, the shears you use as an example, Fisker makes a set exactly like those for 25 bucks a pair.
Can you post a link to the long stones you used?
Good scissors are like a good knife, it's hard to go back once you have upgrades, and definitely worth the effort to sharpen.
to plow through an almost finished project, my ma would slice up an old piece of sandpaper, 150 grit, to temporarily tune up a bald hatchet. (her pet name for a dull scissor) sufficient to get a dress ready for the sewing machine. It worked! Sharpen dull needles by punching them through the same sandpaper a few times.
a very useful programme for me . my scissors are like those fiskars and i have pblms cutting into the plastic inside cereal boxes or bread bags.
Unrelated to this video but I'm curious, why were all your kitchen remodel videos made private? I wanted to revisit a couple of them but couldn't.. :(
Thanks for showing us how to sharpen scissors.
What is the grit of the Lanski Stone and where can u purchase them
Hey Cody try putting a rare Earth magnet on the back of the blade your sharpening. It'll collect the chips instead of having to use a liquid. Or along with a liquid.
Why didn't you separate the two halves? Wouldn't it maki it easier to get to the inside edge with the Lanski?
You could take old scissors apart and place a thin washer or shim to take the wobble. I used soda cans and water bottles if they’re to thick run them over sand paper.
Excellent! Thanks Cody.
Excellent how-to video! Think I'll be trying this soon.
Shouldn't you have dismantled the sciccors to also flatten the area around the screw abit(as much as you did the blade)?
I mean, it can only tighten as far as those two flat areas go. Considering the first part when you removed the rust.
Great video, thanks!
Do you have any difficulties sharpening your 940?
Great video. Asked before but could you please do a video on the prandi felling axe in use and talk about it please?
Also love your videos , you cover so many issues
DOVO and other companies out of Solingen Germany (the city of blades) make some incredible scissors , straight razors , knives , etc. . Thanks Cody
I use some Silicone spray insted of the oil works great also, Thanks for sharing ec.
May I suggest another alternative?
I've been using Smith sharpeners for a few years.
While they may not give a professional edge they're certainly good enough to cut my hair with my shop shears
with a dozen swipes and they keep the angle correct.
I use a small one to keep my pocket multi tool in the same condition.
I seldom need a razor edge but a good cutting slicing tool is ready after a dozen swipes.
Takes about 30 seconds.
What side needs to be sharpened if your sheers do not have an angle side? Both blades are flat.
What a great video. I hope the baby is doing well.
Agree that it may be required to slightly flatten the back edge of the blade. However the blade should be maintained perfectly flat on the stone as in the video. Where did you get the flat stones you were using? :-)
Nice job. Very interesting. I am going to give it a go.
What can I do about scissors with a screw that won't stay tight? I have some that always just loosen up with a few minutes of use

Awesome video thanks for sharing. Very useful tips. BTW, What kind of watch are you wearing? Do a video on your watch. Great video thanks. I hope you have a blessed week.
have 3 pair of the middle set. Will have to try this
What is the latest with your new chainsaw and the modifications you were having done to it. Also did you get Jack a saw
It is WONDERFUL to see you talking about shears. My last name is Shears LOL. Good video, thank you.

Could you please review the anti-chainsaw pants? They are made to release fibers to stop the saw and prevent cuts. I would love to see your review.
How covenient i have a very dull and old "swiss" branded pair of scissors lying around and a lanksy puck, out to the garage! Another useful video thanks!!
Thanks, Wranglerstar.
Looking forward to a content barrage now that you are back to work!
What type of stone do u recommend for sharpening a chisel
Can’t wait to try this!
I didn't realize it was so simple. I keep getting reasons to have a Lansky stone. Between this and the axe, I guess I should go ahead and get one.

Even as an adult she would tell me not to cut anything stupid with them bless her....... it’s the little things that you miss the most 😔
Fenridir omg that brought back another memory! Lol
I cut open a bottle of “ice Magic” it was chocolate sauce that when you put on ice cream it went hard like on a choc ice.
I am now putting myself in your position now and imagining showing my Mum her scissors spot welded together and then the reaction 😂😂
mavos1211 so true.
Fenridir - Since when was there ever a "brief" visit to the emergency room? Maybe the trip there was brief, but my experience there has been hours and hours and hours; everyone I talk to says the same.
Finally a good video.
Finally a good video about it
That was an abrupt ending for a Wranglerstsr video. Thanks for sharing.
Very helpful video. Thanks. More useful to me than installing street equipment on a dirt bike, but that's just me.
Cody, I have to get one of those oil bottles. I could of used one of those many times. Ray, Oklahoma
You can get them on ebay cheap cheap cheap. Probably Amazon too.
I like these how-to videos
I love all your videos even if it is not a tutorial.
Please do more tutorial videos like these! God bless!
Will K agree
anyone know wht the silver bar thing is called he used to polish at first?
cheap homesteading it's a finer grit sharpening stone.
Please don’t! It’s completely wrong 🤦🏼♂️
Aimless Wanderer and
Could you recommend some flat stones through amazon?
mgreene939 if you want a good field sharpening stone, which would work for this as well, the DC4 is a great option. For a bench stones, Japanese water stones work great. I got 1000/6000 grit combo off of Amazon for about $40.
Excellent video
thank you......enjoyed this video!!
Very helpful. Something I was thinking the other day when you were opening the mail was sharpening drill bits, especially that large one.
