- "The Medicine Bag" by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve is a poignant short story that beautifully captures the essence of cultural heritage, generational bonding, and self-identity. The story revolves around Martin, a young boy of mixed Sioux heritage, who is initially embarrassed by the arrival of his elderly grandfather, Grandpa Joe, from the reservation. Grandpa Joe carries with him a "medicine bag," a sacred family heirloom meant to be passed down to Martin.
In "The Medicine Bag," each item in the bag has a unique origin connected to Martin’s family history, particularly to his ancestors' lives and experiences.
1. The Iron Fragment: This piece of iron comes from Martin’s great-grandfather, who worked as a blacksmith. It represents his strength and resilience and serves as a reminder of his hard work and dedication. This fragment was likely something Martin’s great-grandfather carried to represent the strength he needed for his labor-intensive work as a blacksmith.
2. The Sacred Sage: Martin’s grandfather himself placed the sage in the medicine bag. In Indigenous cultures, sage is often gathered directly from nature, where it grows wild, and is selected carefully for ceremonial use. By including sage, Martin’s grandfather connects the bag to the natural and spiritual world, emphasizing purification and protection, values he hopes Martin will honor.
3. The Sacred Stone: The stone holds particular significance as it was found by Martin’s great-grandfather during a vision quest-a spiritual journey taken in solitude, often in nature, to seek guidance and self-discovery. During this time, Martin’s great-grandfather discovered the stone, which became a powerful reminder of his spiritual insights and connection to the land. This stone symbolizes the importance of understanding one’s identity and place within the world.
The medicine bag symbolizes cultural pride, responsibility, and spiritual connection to their Sioux ancestry. Through Grandpa Joe's touching stories, including his vision quest and the significance of the sacred items within the bag, Martin undergoes a transformative journey. He moves from feeling self-conscious about his heritage to embracing it with pride and responsibility.
The story also showcases the beautiful interaction between Grandpa Joe and Martin’s younger sister Cheryl, who is enthusiastic and curious about their grandfather's traditions. Additionally, when Grandpa Joe meets Martin’s friends, he impresses them with his dignified demeanor and traditional attire, helping Martin see the value of authenticity and cultural pride.
Sneve’s narrative weaves themes of tradition, modernity, and familial love, making it a rich tale of self-discovery and cultural preservation. It is a powerful reminder of the importance of honoring one’s roots while navigating the complexities of contemporary life.
