Glad you included his 8x10 work. Met him in the 80’s and we talked for awhile, I was shooting 4x5 at the time. He signed my copy of “Cape Light” with a very personal inscription. If memory serves me correctly, he was shooting the Newport cigarette ads in the 80’s.
Meyerowitz is a master of capturing the inexplicable. Why is that woman wearing a bag over her head? Why is someone jammed into an impossibly tiny car? Why are so many people all walking down the street eating ice cream cones? The mysteries pile on top of one another. It makes humans seem even stranger than they really are. Absolutely fascinating!
I have similar thoughts as you when I look at the pictures. And in this video there is a cornucopia of inspirational motifs that encourage questioning and analysis. I love that. The pictures are not "pure illustrations" - they are curious individual moments that tempt to invent stories about them.
I've never figured out why we know his name. Unremarkable work... I'll stick with people like Gordon Parks and Eugene Smith. Joel must have known the right people.
It is the idea of the channel to show compilations of the work of each author. Would you like something else? If so, tell me what you would add to improve it.

Love this - I was initially expecting some kind of commentary to accompany the photos but I also like the pure focus on the photos themselves
