Thank you for all this information. I am glad that you covered most of my questions.
What do you know about Ireland schools? I am hearing Canadians that are going to study there, why there though?

Glad it helped :) Ireland schools have become largely favourable over the Caribbean in terms of the IMG option for students looking to return to Canada. This is because schools like RCSI have adopted curriculums that more closely resemble Canadian models than in the Caribbean. Many residents that I have met from Ireland have told me that they believed their chances of getting matched into a Canadian residency program were higher if they were coming from an Irish program. I haven’t seen any official data to back this up, but it’s definitely something that I’ve heard now on multiple occasions 🤙

@@nxtgenmd great!!! Thanks for that information. I am wondering if you happen to come across returning students from Lithuanian universities by any chance? How is that in comparison. I’ve heard about Kaunas university of Lithuania but am not aware of any one from Canada returning.

You are correct, the match rates for International Medical Graduates (IMG) are not terrible, but they are signficantly lower than US-trained DOs and MDs.
However, the issue is that those are the numbers for people that actually make it past didactics years and make it to Match day. The real atrocity of attending a Caribbean med school is the attrition rates. Also, they dont match well in competitive fields like neurosurgery, ophthalmology, and ENT. They even struggle in match into general surgery categorically.
That said, if you make it past the first 2 years and do well in clerkships, it's not all doom-and-gloom. Just be realistic in case you're interested in neurosurgery.

100% agree, currently a Carib med student. My education has been amazing, I’m passing my tests, and I know I need to continue to work hard.
I’m grateful for the opportunity I was given because no MD or DO school would’ve given me a shot given my stats, but that’s life and it is what it is.
That being said, having shadowed and worked at a hospital I have no interest in surgery thankfully. Aiming heavily towards IM, and the only competitive thing on my radar is Anesthesiology but I think I prefer IM the most.
Definitely going to cast a wide net once I apply to residency, and coming to the Carib you gotta be realistic with your choices, and be ok landing in primary care, which I like.
If you’re boning for surgery or rad/onc or urology optho etc I recommend stay in the US or Canada no matter how long it takes.
