  • My new album, "Lighten Up" is available for pre-sale today, April 17, 2020 and will be available everywhere you listen to music on April 24, 2020! I want to tell you about the amazing instrument I recorded with this time around! The Yamaha C7 Disklavier Pro allowed me to totally isolate my voice and the piano as I simultaneously recorded both at Ming Dynasty Studio in Long Beach.
    Visit my website to purchase or stream Lighten Up on all platforms (but for the next week, only for pre-sale): www.aimeenolte...
    Right now, the album is only available through streaming. If you'd like to donate toward helping me print CDs, please click here: paypal.me/aimn
    Thank you so much!

    That piano is really an amazing peace of techonology. It's basically a digital version of the old piano rolls.. + velociy. :-) Your engineer is right about the velocity range, but if you play on your Korg with weighted key you will probably play in the same range on intensity of a normal piano. It should have the 1-127 levels in the sustain pedal too (not if you use the cheep on off switch). Mine much cheaper Yamaha p115 has velocity range on the sustain. Great video and best wishes for your new album!

    • @hsitz
      @hsitz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, only the cheapest midi pedals are on/off, 0-127 is common. Also, the velocity range is adjustable on most keyboards controllers, usually called "touch" or "sensitivity" adjustment, which doesn't adjust anything about how the keys feel, just controls how velocity levels correlate with key presses, e.g., whether a hard press sends velocity of, say, 80, or 85, or 88. . .

    • @felixtang1753
      @felixtang1753 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Congratulations on your new recording and for telling us about the technology used. As a much less expensive alternative to that technology, you should try PíanoTeq paired with an awesome piano controller like the Kawai VCP1. The VCP1 is built from an actual piano mechanism. PianoTeq software is based in physical modelling and it provides a level responsiveness and nounce that is unmatched by sampling based systems.

    Any ambition to compose too? The first pronunciation of Disklavier was better. A bit too long on the "kla" for German, they put the emphasis on the second syllable. The second syllable has the same sound as in "beer" but then with a v.

      @AimeeNolte  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Peter. :-) My last three albums have been full of originals. This is the first time I have sung from the great American songbook. I hope you like it!

  • @peterjansen4826
    @peterjansen4826 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That Disklavier is interesting but I do see one possible disadvantage. If it plays itself based on the recording then you can only have a limited number of volumes. For example if it uses 4 bits (which Yamaha often uses) for the volume then you have only 16 volumes which can be used. So you can loose some nuance. I don't know how many bits they use, if they would use 5 bits then you get 32 volumes, with 6 bits 64...
    Other than that you might also loose some nuance with how exactly you touch the key, more to the back or more to the front. Difficult to say. These pianos might be a lot further than the regular $1500-3000 ones. Indeed, I want people to play the piano and I think that the subtle nuances which you get by humans playing, good and bad (errors), make it more interesting. You hear the personality through the playing.

    • @SeanRaleigh
      @SeanRaleigh 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MIDI uses 7 bits (128 levels, 0-127) for velocities. While it's true that not all instruments record velocity that finely, I'm pretty sure the Disklavier pianos do.

    • @peterjansen4826
      @peterjansen4826 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SeanRaleigh I have a 2008 Yamaha (Clavinova-series), that has only 4 or 5 bits for the volume-level according to the manual, I think it is 4 but I would need to look it up to be sure. 128 bits seems pretty ok to me, it requires a good player to need more, I would think.
      Anyway, with an electric piano the bigger problem is the sound when it is synthesized. Obviously the Disklavier has both real piano sound and synthesized sound so for that one it is not a problem. For example, in the case of my Yamaha the d sounds rather ugly, you hear some weird artifact sound when you play the d. You also can hear that with eartraining software (tonedearcom). I have been curious to what extend they could improve that by using better CPU's these days, CPU's which can handle more complex Fourier transforms (more sinusoids to produce 1 tone).

    • @4thesakeofitname
      @4thesakeofitname 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@peterjansen4826 Yamaha's consumer (non-pro) electronic keyboards or lower grade electronic pianos indeed use 4 or 5 bits (my e. keybaord is using 4 bits I think) to encode the key velocities (aka "touch sensitivity" on the e.keyboards). Even the more expensive pro devices could be using 5 bits max. But this device (Disklavier) that Aimee played seems to be using full 8-bits, and hence offer 128 distinct velocity levels of piano key touch. And the produced MIDI files can utilize all 128 levels, though on most practical cases (as Aimee recalled) a narrower than available dynamic range is observed and recorded. Furthermore, if you make the MIDI recording using another device, you won't be able to take advantage of that full sensitivity range either... Anyway, digital technology (CPU power, RAM, HDD, paralel processing, and algorithms) has progressed more than 100x in speed and more than 1000x in computational power in the last three decades. Yet neither Yamaha nor other brands seem to reflect this available potential into improving their electronic keybaord hardware products. Don't know the actual reasons; technical, strategical..? Compare this to how little smartphones can have astonishing visual capabilities these days, the electronic music industry is responding quite slowly when compared. There could be some theoretical limitations too. Synthesizing natural sounding instruments with live play capability is way more difficult than it may seem at first, especially when compared to robotic synthesizers.

    • @peterjansen4826
      @peterjansen4826 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@4thesakeofitname The only technical reason to hold back with more accurate sound which I can think of with my knowledge of electronics is latency. That they use 4 or 5 bits for consumer-electronics is disappointing, it seems to only serve up-selling.

      casio home keyboards can submit midi velocity with 14 bits so an expensive professional instrument can probably do just as well. Its a weird hack on midi though, so maybe hard to edit when 127 levels is good enough.
