I never thought I'd say this but Bob's Gospel period from 79-81 is by far my favourite live wise. Obviously the bible, spirituality, redemption and transcendence runs through all his work but this time in particular just hits me straight in the heart.
Dear Pat: You can say that again. Look at the reviews of "Trouble No More," the magnificent collection of 100 songs from Bob's intense three-year evangelical phase, which came out in November 2017. Almost every review says the same damn thing as all the others -- and the same damn thing that nearly all the critics, in their infinite wisdom, said of the three Christian albums upon their release. With few exceptions, it's one cliche or platitude after another -- as though all these idiot-journalists are shouting into the same echo chamber. Which, of course, they are. Do they crib from one another? Such reprehensible blinkered criticism. And forty years on they're saying the same damn things. Media people are the most conformist, most rigid, most narrow-minded dolts in the country and in the Western world. Dylan was right to expect hostility to his message, elements of which had existed in his art all along. Bob's so-called fans and followers turned on him faster than you can shout "Judas!" But you get it, Pat, as do several other pilgrims here. Ours can be a lonesome path, but for Dylan and us there can be no other. We've taken the detours, and they're all dead ends. So we press on, trusting that we stay on the one true path.
@@toddhyatt4778 Dylan has always been willing to go against the grain and walk the bitter dance of loneliness. a prophet is never welcomed in his own town...he did later get a grammy for slow train & nobel prize he may have a million people at his feet but all he sees are dark eyes. i personally love the band ,especially on Are you resdy. Dylan also had an encounter with Christ where he was told America is under judgement and Christ is coming soon..hence the intensity. years earlier hed written its not to stand naked under unknowing eyes but for myself and friends these songs did i write
It's funny how this period of Dylan's career has been largely overlooked. It's obvious the man was brilliant. Whether you're a gospel fan or not, this performance is spine tingling. I hope that one day the Massey hall concerts will be released as part of his Bootleg series.
I’m not religious at all, but I’ve always thought his albums Saved and Shot of Love were among the best work he ever made. The lyrics and band are phenomenal.
Listening in 2020. I pray that Dylan and all believers are pressing on, So true "many try to stop me, shake me up in my mind" as the mind/heart is where the main Battle is ... ( the battle is not to the swift or strong But to those that endure to the END ). It's a choice in life we all have 🙂🙏
Heard this song for the first time at 75 years old thanks to the miracle of You Tube! Have been listening to Bob's Gospel years songs for a long time, but was unaware of his Black Gospel creations. Love his piano duet version of "Abraham, Martin and John" with Clydie King that he performed at the end of his concerts which I became aware of on TH-cam, but unaware of Pressing On and a few others. Read that he would end each concert playing the piano with his Black backup singers. Such an emotional song. Bob has an unbelievable God given talent that is one of a kind!
Bob dylan is my religion.i found a tape of desire when i was 14 and it blew my mind.theres not a song or album ive not heard hundreds of versions of. Im 37 now and still listen to dylan most days. Hes the greatest singer ,songwriter there will ever be. Theres nobody or nothing else that can make me feel the way he does. Some people say he carnt sing etc. You either get dylan or you dont .
i wanted to be dylan , i'm 67 now and have no need for that type of stuff that was when i was 13 or so...i believe like this period of dylan's life produce some great stuff, dylan no stranger to people's dislikes of what he's expressing and how...the never ending tour is a great e.g.
Thank you, Lord, for blessing Bob with these spirit-fueled days. I suspect the Spirit was in Bob from the start and is with him to this day. But this is a real special part of Bob’s life and career, and those of us who lived through it were blessed as well. Keep pressing on.
Just discovered this gem. Wow -powerful performance by Dylan and the choir, great song about conviction, faith and spirit. You needn't be religious to get it.
Dear Michael: Precisely, Michael. Well said. But you might be surprised how many former devotees of Dylan reviled him for his message of renewal and salvation -- and consequently tuned out the "voice of a generation." Or maybe you wouldn't be surprised, since you've probably seen it a thousand times. To all secular Bob Dylan fans: "Yes, non-believers, you can appreciate Bob's Christian corpus. You can remain true to your atheism while listening to the gospel music. So sit back and enjoy the show. And cool it." I don't suppose that they'd pay any attention.
Have just watched the Rolling Thunder Revue film. At the end discovered the year in which I saw him in KC. Was this tour. Utterly spellbinding. Had to wait all these years to see someone’s video 🥰 Truly an Easter weekend!
I went out and bought “Shot of Love” and everything I could get my hands on by Bob during those years! Even though the Evangelical world didn’t get behind him; I believe that those who experienced the Holy Spirit in Dylan’s writings are still ministered to by his current works! He has been mightily used of God! Thanks Zimmy!
I love these songs so much! The only Jesus songs I listen too, as I find Bob is sincere and his only aim when he sang was to lift God high and honour Him. Best songs from Bob IMO
This, serve somebody and precious angel r his best 3 "Christian" songs.....IMO...with 'slow train' right there too... 'SERVE' is in MY top 5 of his all time....
Thank you so much, Peter, for sharing❗️That moment at 03:28 😍👍 "Shake the dust off of your feet, don't look back. Nothing can hold you down, nothing that you lack."
I am in the middle of reading "Trouble in MInd" by Clinton Heylin. Toronto gets a mention in Chapter 7. This song just keeps Pressin' On and On and On!! Terrific band, Terrific Backing Vocals, Terrific Performance, Terrific Message!

Saw Dylan in Chicago last weekend. Felt like I was witnessing Shakespeare at the globe.

The Saved album was a masterpiece of faith and spiritual growth. Some critics were to blind to comprehend it. I imagine they still are.

In an interview he said that he went gospel because he needed weed money. I don't care. love the set. love this tune.
I’m no Christian but fuck me that’s top, top Gospel sang with conviction
Those voices are like bathing in praise.

Just catching up on these two albums and yes, agree, very uplifting and soulful.
Bob Dylan was one of the few people who converted me to Christian faith back in 1995 - with his record Saved.

Only 2 people touch my soul...both I never met...Jesus and Dylan.......
God Bless yooz all.... from Philly!
I can't love this song any better
Bob produced some of his greatest songs during this period of his career (1979-1981).
Thank you, Lord, for blessing Bob with these spirit-fueled days. I suspect the Spirit was in Bob from the start and is with him to this day. But this is a real special part of Bob’s life and career, and those of us who lived through it were blessed as well.

Yep
This is absolutely insane.
Isn't it
Always love the way this builds and builds then...boom.....thanks Bob

Bob's pressin on, that piano.
Oh my lord, those voices..
Beautiful...
This song is a great masterpiece that has been duplicated by many performers. Dylan always brings magic out with his singing.
I BELIEVE Bob can sing, and sing very well. Such an inspirational song! Just lifts me up!!
Me too, Bobby, me too. Happy New Year 2023! I hope that we could be together soon.

Always a pleasure to hear people clap on the beat and not on the off-beat. That way it doesn't confuse the back-up singers.
I love these songs so much! The only Jesus songs I listen too, as I find Bob is sincere and his only aim when he sang was to lift God high and honour Him. Best songs from Bob IMO
Toronto 1980 is mind-blowing

Bob Dylan was a born-again Christian, and he
was also a backslider.
But he's still the greatest songwriter of all time.

Dylan’s conversion coincided with mine. Leaving behind the old to enter the new is what “Pressing On” is about.
