The Liberty Bell March | John Philip Sousa

  • This iconic march from John Philip Sousa has a unique origin story-it began as a piece of an opera he was composing for comedian Francis Wilson called "The Devil's Deputy." While the opera was eventually scrapped, it was his band manager, George Frederick Hinton, that suggested revisiting the march with a new title after seeing a massive artwork depicting the Liberty Bell in Chicago. Coincidentally, Sousa received a letter from his wife telling him that their son had just marched in a parade in Philadelphia honoring the return of the Liberty Bell from touring the nation. The rest is history!

I’ve got the original Lakeside record of this March from around 1905 or so… and this fine Army band still nails it 120 years later!

My Dad and his WWII buddies would be firing at 3rd and Main in half an hour, at 11 am, in our small town, today November 11, 2022. Rest in Peace. We miss you dearly. See you soon!

The timbre and resonance from those chimes are so full. It’s not too loud or soft it’s perfect. Awesome job to the player.

Notice that the conductor almost never actually beat time except when he wanted the audience to start clapping along. He prepared the dynamic changes before the start of each phrase but otherwise got out of the way and let the players do their jobs.

Great piece, but the conductor was exceptional! It's hard to get a sense of how delicate Sousa's pieces are when you know them only from your local high school marching band because there are little or no dynamics to their performances. He got it all just right.
