The problem with first party real-money item sales and paid services is the massive conflict of interest inherent to such dynamics. When devs directly profit from item sales and paid services within their own game, then those devs are financially incentivized to design their game so as to maximize player engagement with real money sales and paid services. If there's a real-money auction house, then devs have a literal profit-motive to create obstacles, challenges, and hardships that are best alleviated not with gameplay but rather with real money exchanges.
One of the most famous examples of this dynamic is Shadow of War, the sequel to Shadow of Mordor. Both are single player games, but Shadow of War included a ton of paid microtransactions at launch. Among those microtransactions were "experience boosters" that increased the rate of player progression. To incentivize the player to purchase these boosters, the devs deliberately turned the game into a an unnecessarily grindy and painful slog. So whereas Shadow of Mordor was a fun and well-balanced game, Shadow of War was an exercise in pure frustration.
When only third parties make money off of item sales and paid services, the devs are not financially motivated to sacrifice the integrity of their game. In fact, it's exactly the opposite; devs are financially motivated to punish third party gold sellers and their customers, which helps to maintain the integrity of a game's economy.
Anyone who says "gold selling is inevitable, why shouldn't the devs regulate and benefit from it" hasn't thought about the idea for more than a minute.

In terms of the overwhelming number of skills when you boost a character: the same is also rue if you didn't boost it, but have not played the character in a long time, they did major reworks, or if you change your spec. If I leveled to max level as an elemental shaman, but then I want to try out enhancement, I will have no idea wtf is going on and will have to spend a long time reading through every skill and trying to determine which ones I need to have keybound, in which order to press them, all of the different procs, etc. It might be better to just roll a new shaman and play enhancement from the start, but do I really want to spend that much time to level a new toon?

1:23 I played Raid as f2p soon after its launch, when it wasnt monetized as much as nowadays and didnt have sponsored videos/streams. It was fun - every content was completely clearable at a high level with an appropriate team, consisting of sometimes even just uncommon rated heroes, because even though they had just 1 ability, it was this good for this specific fight. Then, when you finally could clear everything at your max potential, you would hit a wall - you wouldnt been able to progress without certain legendary characters, who needed to have a certain ability leveled up to max (abilities levels ranged 1-5 I believe). You could only level the skills up with a suitable rarity of a skill book, so thats legendary skill book for legendary heroes - 1 timegated per month at that time if I recall correctly. Thats unless of course, if you had have won a tournament (that was hard to even get to top 1000 as a f2p player, without even speaking about winning) that occured like once per 3-7 days, I dont really remember. So you would need at least 4 books to lvl up an ability (so 4 months of f2p playing), at least, because one random ability was leveled up at a use of one single book. That made me quit, but I certainly dont regret, and sometimes I even miss, my 2-3 months of daily 30 min gameplay I had with this game. Community was a blast too.

I like to have the option to go full story mode. In Genshin and Honkai you have that (minus when a new event forces you to get it done asap to not miss out). 90% of the time I am farming, collecting, experimenting - your typical "2nd monitor on" stuff. But I feel like "once in a while, I use all the stuff to easily do the story making my work pay off" is a great motivation factor. Like some chocolate you are keeping in closet.

  • @Exilum
    @Exilum ปีที่แล้ว +2

Honestly the ability to know the quality of an opponent's gear from how it looks is something I don't like in the first place.
It creates a knowledge gap, and you lose all the risk inherent to PvP. You fight people weaker and don't fight people as good or stronger.
If a game had to have the ability to determine gear quality before an ambush, I'd do three things:
    - I'd put inspection behind a job, with maybe consumables to one-time increase the inspection ability.
    - I'd make the inspection window have different levels of details (per-item). A successful inspection could lead you to get all the details, while one that barely passes would lead to approximations. A failed inspection on an item would lead to just question marks everywhere.
    - I'd give players the ability to better "disguise" their gear with another job. A better disguised gear would fare better against inspections.
Not only does it recreate the premeditation based on gear, but it also extends gameplay for both parties in a new direction.

    • @blakkwaltz

What if a game is completely based around knowledge gaps? World of tanks relies on knowing the statistics for all of the hundreds of tanks in order to win.

    • @Exilum
      @Exilum ปีที่แล้ว

@@blakkwaltz My focus was on MMORPGs. There are games where it's just part of the main gameplay, so there's no reason to do anything about it. If the game is meant to have knowledge gaps, it should. But in mmorpgs, this kind of knowledge is too good. Unlike WOT, WOW can't just assume players are going to kill each other. So an embush that does or doesn't happen due to that knowledge is a permanent imbalance in aggression between different levels. I'd have less of an issue with it if it was in a matchmaking system and not in the wild. There would be no way to only fight weaker opponents, and being able to adapt your strategy to your opponent's gear would add a layer of depth.

    • @blakkwaltz

I hate raiding in MMOS. I hate it because it requires getting a lot of add-ons to manage triggers, phases, etc. I hate it because you have to study the fights ahead of time on 3rd party sites like youtube just so you don't waste everyone else's time by taking a few steps to the left at the wrong time. I hate the inordinate amount of time a raid takes once it hits 2+ hours because that means I can't just play for an evening, I have to schedule this shit ahead of time and make an appointment. I hate it because it requires doing so much that ISN'T PLAYING THE GAME that it ends up feeling like a JOB instead.
PvP has most of the same problems, just replace studying boss fights with studying meta pvp tactics and builds.
The most fun I ever had in WoW was the early days doing a 10-man plain ordinary dungeon run. It was tough but it was doable by the seat of your collective pants. You could go in without knowing everything ahead of time and have a reasonable opportunity for success. You could treat it not like homework or a job, but like an Adventure.
So when the "End Game" is raiding and pvp, and the "game starts at endgame" that game is a hard pass, thanks.

I love inventory management in games like Resident Evil cause it is about planning in that game - Do I need to have room for my shotgun if I encounter a licker or do I risk it. Do I need to carry around this key item or can I store it for later.

    • @altrag
      @altrag ปีที่แล้ว +1

The "can I store it" part is somewhat important I think. There are two big problems with inventory management in a lot of games (not just MMOs - I've been annoyed by this shit going back all the way to like the original Final Fantasy games):
      1) The sheer number of items to manage. MMOs often have tens if not hundreds of thousands of items, especially long-running MMOs like WoW or FF14. It's just too much to keep track of if the game forces you to do so manually.
      2) "What should I delete"? It just feels terrible having to purge a toy or a piece of gear that you spent a long time obtaining just because you ran out of inventory space. Being able to "store" it in some fashion alleviates that a lot (the key item in your example, but also having toys/pets/mounts/transmog sets/etc maintained elsewhere falls into this category - can sell or otherwise delete the original item as the "important" part (the cosmetic) is saved in a dedicated system.
Crafting materials tend to be a major problem in this regard. Its rare that you can (reasonably) hold more than 1-2 sets of materials at a time, and they usually don't have alternative storage. So if you're for example wanting to level a new crafting skill you find yourself having to first offload any materials for your existing skills and then start a continuous cycle of obtaining each tier's materials, using them, purging the leftovers, rinse and repeat.
Maybe that's not _so_ bad if you follow a guide that lays out exactly what materials you need every step of the way so there's little you have to "purge" at the end, but now you've got it leveled and you decide to go back and fill in the recipes you missed? Get to do the whole purge and obtain process all over again. Its not _hard_ really, but its immensely frustrating (at least if you have the gold to buy all the materials - its even worse if you have to farm them yourself or wait for auction sales to complete at each step).

I hate dailies because it reduces my fun to a checklist usually. I miss the days of mmos where i had no daily quests and I would think “what will I work on today? What quests should I start? Where should I go”
RuneScape was a game I never had a daily checklist. You did what you planned to do and if you didn’t login you just wasted potential exp that day.
Now it seems like most games want you to focus on dailies then get the fuck off. Lots of player hand holding afraid to make reasons to play the game because they want to, make up reasons they can’t miss a day. Often times I wonder why I even play some games because I can’t remember when I had fun in them. I’m just in the cycle of getting my daily account progression to be ready for eventual fun that may come…….
Fun games sadly are like remnant 2. You enjoy them for 30 or so hours then you are done. Nothing to force you to play and no endless grind to waste your time. Part of you wishes it was there but if it was you know the fun would dry up and it would be just like all the shitty games as a service games you stopped enjoying but continue to play and tell yourself you still do.

When bonds were released on RS, it cut a huge chunk of RWT, but at the expense of game quality, I guess.
I think RS bonds are decent, because the cost usually lingers around 60-70M gp(x2 for a month), you can easily make that in 5 days at 1-2 hours a day for 1 month membership. You get triple the amount of gold if you RWT, but then if you get caught and banned, you just lost loads of progress.

All craftable and usable items go into a craftable storage area that is account wide and can be accessed from anywhere
Gear goes to a gear storage anywhere accessible by anywhere on that account. Lots of sorting and filter methods and automatic rules you can set-up to salvage and sell items you know you'll never need (e.g. rule to salvage everything under a certain level)

Transmog is a direct consequence of power creep. It sucks bonkers when an awesome-looking piece of gear you farmed hours to get becomes useless because some other new piece is just better. Now you have to ditch the gear you like locking at in favour of something that looks like shit just to keep up with everyone else. People love to customize the look of their characters, be it for the class fantasy, role play or just aesthetics. It does not help when the new gear being made by devs looks like garbage or follows a visual theme you don't like. I had this issue in Bfa where every powerful piece of gear I got looked like Aztec shit. It would have destroyed the visual cohesion of my character if it were not for the transmog system.
What also does not help is that most of the gear is not unique anyway since only the stats matter.
As long as developers don't know a way to fix this, transmog systems are not going away.

The solution to the daily problem is so simple. WoW already figured it out with pvp conquest points. Not sure if it still works like this but the game would track how many conquest points in a season were available so if you started halfway through the season you could just spam BGs/arenas until you were caught up to where everyone else was at. I think all daily systems need to work like that. This way if you miss a few days you don’t feel behind or like you’re missing out. Just do the content whenever you have the time to or feel like it instead of feeling like some mandatory chore.

Gotta say... out of all the MMORPGs I have ever played, New World is the WORST when it comes to item/inventory management. Holy SHIT is it annoying if I am not constantly on top of it.
Your point at 9:30 is spot on... I have boosted 3 characters in WoW, and I have played none of them, for the reason of I have no idea what the hell is going on. I wasted 100 dollars on that crap... Most games are terrible at teaching the player on what to do. New World is, again, a good example of this. You can create so many options for weapon-pairing, and you can optimize in so many ways with gems, and they're increasing the stat changing that gems are offering that open up more options for players to use weapons with intellect of focus stats. But, the game itself does a terrible job at telling you exactly how your stats are allocated, how they effect your fights, etc. You have to basically make an Excell spreadsheet to keep track of all the different values. IF I wanted to optimize my character, I would have to spend 60% of my time doing mathematics and grinding for materials, maybe even longer... leaving such a little amount of time for me to actually enjoy the game in the way I want. I just am completely overwhelmed, that I chose to start a new character yet again so I can go slowly, slower than I have ever gone in a video game so I can grasp everything... I feel once I do, the playerbase will be lowered again, the meta will change, I will have to change what I do yet again...
If there is anything I hate in MMORPGs (or ANY competitive game for that matter) it's the fucking META. I am so sick and tired of near everyone conforming to what does the most damage, what gives the most survivability, what has the largest numbers, etc. It's just not fun at all. It's just another job that I am not getting payed for...

If the game does not have combat addons, they don't feel pressured to design around people having them. ESO and FFXIV are on console, so they cannot design encounters around having them. If you wanna just flex your powerlevel, you can still just use the hardest to obtain transmog. It only becomes a problem, if there are very similar looking sets, but that's not an issue with transmog by itself. Same goes for cash shop sets, that is a cash shop problem, not a transmog problem.

I think the add-ons might have even used my skills for me automatically cuz I sure as hell don't remember anything about the combat. (This was when max level was 60). Sw:tor on the other hand, I remember the combat very well. It was bad. Too complex. There was like 4 different "stamina bars". Raid is actually a fun game its issue is that Plarium REALY likes to squeze the comunity for resources during events and ofcourse when people are just a tiny inch away from beating the event and getting their new champ they will open the wallet and that has become Plariums buisness model. Squeze resorces and sell the resources that are missing. Also the bosses in the late game are not very enjoyable and require very very specific skills that very few champs have for example sand devil requires you to have a champ that can place the sleep debuff but when sand devil released almost no champs could do this because sleep hade been the games joke debuff for years. There is real potential for Raid to be a really good game but management is killing it because of monetization and they dont really know how their own game works.

Also problems I had with wow back the times since launch on and off when I played a LOT of different classes I played up to shadowlands I think I spent the most time in wrath and cata though, but I would say the problems with the gatekeeping is almost always due to gear not being high enough even if you are using a good spec and good roll if your gear(which you are CURRENTLY trying to obtain through this method) is not high enough, people don't like that.....

Which is why I moved on to ff14 which I already perviously had an account in and never went back to wow, I played a scholor last going out knowing it could be a trickier job if you didn't understand how macros worked in which if you did you could be a wicked off healer or main healer if needed while at the same time dps. So many times I would join as dps scholar and if the healer dropped I would just say no worries I got this.

Everything he said: Yepp, that's why the only MMORPG I still play is Guild Wars 2. And why every other sucked so far.

Bro pls LazyPeon barely touches anything besides the surface of any games nowadays to even consider any of his opinions valid

You don't have to go elbow deep, for 1000+ hours, and how much he plays Lost Ark ain't the point. He's addressing MMORPGs generally and the valid point that's being made is that he has a past record of pontificating from ignorance. For a couple of prime examples look at his FF14 review of a few years ago (pro tip; you can't as he deleted it after being called out) or more recently, his GW2 one of a few weeks ago which had most of the GW2 community (that notably toxic (sarcasm) bunch) scratching their collective heads wondering just how little you would have to know about the game to not be ashamed of such low quality content.

@@dirkymcdirkyface4851 Yeah, it was kind of amusing seeing someone as chill as GW2 community and CC's being dumbfounded and somewhat tilted with LP's latest "review" of the game. What was especially funny was the fact he was complaining about things that game already has as absent (build loadouts for example).

Its definitely the vantage point for me that Im looking for. Theres tons of options and hes right with what is engaging to someone on the market looking for a game.

A cool solution to New World would have been to have a "Bane" slot that you can swap in an item in and out to modify the resistance type.

For me, the biggest issue with some of these MMORPG's is that shareholders, investors and the company suits have become more important than the average player and the overall health of the game.

auto play can do just about any gameplay, so "just removing any activity that could be autoplayed" would leave us no game (aside from chatting ingame).
humans enjoy playing chess eventho computers started beating us in the 90s.
