  • After an extended hiatus, Bleach, by Kubo Tite (Kubo Taito) has returned full force with Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War. While its manga run has officially concluded, Bleach thousand year blood war acts as the final arc's animated adaptation, nearly 6 years in waiting.
Released in 2001 and continued for 15 years, Bleach was and continues to be one of the most recognizable manga/anime franchises to date, along with others like One Piece and Dragon Ball.
Featuring Ichigo Kurosaki, Rukia Kuchiki, Uryu Ishida, Renji Abarai, Yasutora Sado (Chad), and Orihime Inoue, the band of main characters (mainly Ichigo and Rukia) get swept up in conflicts between humans, soul reapers, and eventually fullbringers.
Bleach is currently airing this Fall 2022 season along with Chainsaw Man, Spy x Family part 2, Mob Psycho 100 season 3, and others.

CORRECTION: In checking my sources again, there was a kink in the translation in terms of what games Kubo had worked on. He said he was PLAYING Monster hunter Icebourne at the time, but up to that point did work on RE:2 (costumes for Leon and Claire). The proximity of the two sentences tripped me up and made me think he worked on Icebourne - sorry Icebourne players!
Because everyone is multi-dimensional, here's some context on Torishima for those inerested:
In my research he seemed like a business man more than a manga editor. He never read or was interested in the manga, even when he was put into the editing position (which was against his will). One source states that he hated it so much he decided to just speak what was on his mind, operating under the logic of "if I tell them the mangakas they're shit, they'll feel a need to improve and will do better". Not sure if I agree with that logic but ok he did somehow climb the ladder to be Editor in Chief (whether or not he actually wanted the position). At the end of his life he became CEO and president of multiple companies, so if he was a business man he eventually got there.
Credit where credit is due, he single handedly saved Doberman Deka, ballooning its popularity for #13 in a readers' survey ranking to #3, and arguably made Dragonball more than the author himself. At one point Akira Toriyama (Dragonball's author) entered a manga competition with a oneshot that was almost a parody of Star Wars. In accordance with the rules of the competition he was disqualified, but Torishima noticed him, onboarded him, and personally trained him for a year and a half through "trial and error" before Dr. Slump was made. Another ronud of this and Dragonball was made. If it wasn't for Torishima, Toriyama might not have ever even had a career.
For those who read Dr. Slump, the evil scientist in that series is directly inspired from Torishima. And for those who have watched or read Bakuman, the Torishima character is meant to be almost a carbon copy of Torishima in real life

      To think we got
Dragon Ball because Toriyama was running out of cigarette money, saw the contest for (then monthly) Jump magazine, and decided to give it a whirl.
Torishima definitely seems to be a hard nosed, maybe overly blunt kinda guy, but has good story sensitivities. Reading the behind the scenes tidbits found in the Dr. Slump volumes is a fascinating education in manga making. The relationship between Toriyama and Toshima is interesting and hilarious. They even go into fist fights!

You don't need to write multiple to be a good author. I'd actually argue focusing on ONE is better than getting your mind mixed up in multiple since you'll always use your other works for reference throwing off the setting you had originally invisioned.

    • @dushaunlewis7574
      @dushaunlewis7574 ปีที่แล้ว +16

@@Valstrax420 Or by writing multiple stories your writing would improve over time. Many famous authors' best work isn't their first. It also depends on how long the story needs to be, unnecessarily dragging stories out can harm your work. It's better to read something short and sweet than something lengthy and mediocre.
However, it is best to focus on *one story at a time* than writing multiple at once.

To be fair you forgot one more thing, he also did a One-Shot of Bleach which basically confirm he wants to continue Bleach and Burn the Witch. We know he plans to make more, but he has come out and said "If you ask me to make it, i won't, i will make it when i feel like i can make it". And after his whole journey making manga and reach the point that he has, he deserve it, he went through hell and back. He has done a lot, and he deserves respect whatever you like his work or not... Which i love, so im of the mentality of "Let the man take his time, yeah, it's possible that something happens to him, but i prefer him doing stuff at his own pace then tormenting the poor guy, not a single author deserves that."

As someone who been studying and practicing anime art for 5 years now, I can safely say that drawing arts, specially when you have a time limit to deliver weekly AND you are drawing one of the most popular manga that people all over the world will read and criticize, is STRESSFUL!
I always loved how well drawn Bleach was and always respected Kubo as an artist, even before I started drawing myself and realized how hard it is.
He definitely deserved to rest after finishing Bleach, regardless if he got injured or not. The man left his mark on the anime world, and worked hard to finish his biggest series, I believe not even having long hiatus at all, which is more than most mangaka can say.
I would LOVE to see him creating more and more series like Bleach, but I fully respect his choice if he decides to never create a series as big again.

The editing is kinda hard to follow in this vid, but cool story. Really love Kubo's stories and especially character designs, barely ever felt such a sense of style & great character dynamics like I did with Bleach. One of the things I love about Jujutsu Kaisen in more recents years is how much it reminded me of Bleach in that way and I feel like it's an inspiration for it.
It's always an iffy subject around creative artists and external pressure. Some of the best stuff really does come from so much pressure shaping diamonds out of creatives, but it's kinda hard to accept that you need that to squeeze the best works out of the artist, it would be great to see something from Kubo that is more of a passion project rather than a strict serialization. If he remains more involved with game development hopefully he gest involved with something like an RPG or some game that can be character-driven.

Sound mixing is so much better than the Chainsaw Man video two weeks ago, absolute banger of a video. If I had to have just a few minor notes just to help you improve:
The voice effect(? I think it's a voice effect, that or you were just much further from the mic so it sounded like a telephone effect) that is on your voice as you narrate the conversation between the two at 0:55 was a nice touch, but honestly I would like that to carry over into the actual conversation with one of them rather than cutting off soon after the into. To keep this in line with the editing, the guy on the right would have the "next-to-us" sound because he's there for the whole bit, then the two that get switched between on the left would have a telephone sort of effect on them.
The music throughout was at an amazing level. Noticeable and nice to listen to while not overpowering your voice or the effects. What does kind of make me a little conflicted is your use of sound effects as you are narrating. In most places this is fine, but especially with voice clips such as the one that overlaps with your voice on 0:29, the sound effect didn't mesh too with your voice, specifically after the word "mangaka". I know what you were going for with that effect and personally I would quickly fade out the effect after he and you say "mangaka" together as the voice clip has served it's purpose at that point, but do whatever you think is best. The TL:DR of this is just to keep your levels in mind when using sound effects, make sure the main audio you want to be heard, in this case your voice, can be interpreted no problem on the first listen through.
On a positive note, the editing on the One Piece introduction at 3:32-3:42? Omfg, STELLAR work both with video and audio. I honestly cannot tell you how much I loved that part, I audibly went "AW THAT'S GOOD" to myself when that happened. The only thing I might add would be let it play out just a bit longer, like a second or two before fading out? But idk how TH-cam is with the copyright on that song soooooooooo prolly better for you not to tbh just to be safe.
And the subtle slide in to lead us right back to the Chainsaw Man video at the end? Sly as hell and amazingly done.
Keep up the good work, and as always take what I say with a grain of salt, I am biased and only one guy. Maybe even think about branching out beyond just anime-related topics. Not trying to push you out of your specialty or anything of the sort, I've enjoyed everything I've watched from you up until now for sure. However, it may be good to try a few outliers out on topics your still interested in but breaks the mold a bit from your usual content. Just as a light suggestion for channel growth, do what you like to make at the end of the day and I'm sure you'll keep rolling out bangers.

The biggest issue with Kubo's career is how he never agreed with his editors and Jump was doing their best to estrange themselves from him. Which caused a lot of his arcs to be rushed to hell and back. You can see it in his manga panels where his first volumes had so much details in them that you wouldn't immediately think it was a Shounen manga. To eventually becoming rather undetailed and more blank backgrounds became present as the arcs went on. In my opinion Jump should just treat them like they treat the Jojo author let him publish at his own pace and his own time, to hell with deadlines.

JOJO is a seinen now. Different demographic compared to Shonen. While Shonen is more for teens. Seinen is more for adults. That means he have more time to plan out everything since he will release his chapters after one month. The author of JOJO also had it's deadline. But he made a graphic on when he will start planning. Which character he should reintroduce, spends a certain time making new characters and stands etc. If you read JOJO. You will see he reuse quite alot of Stand abilities. And some aspects of JOJO definitely feels off at times.

Really liked your editing. If I may give one advice: please equilize the audio. I watched your video near some sleeping people, so I had to keep a low volume. But sometimes the sound of your voice was too low, and sometimes too loud. I had to keep moving the volume up and down to keep it at a certain level.

Bleach is one of my favourite series ever and that alone catched my eye on what you had to say, however, your editing man is waaaaaay too good. Congratulations, you really kept me hooked with the story and way you presented it. Thanks for that ride man. Subbed ;)

While I think Bleach is one of the weaker long form battle shonen to come out of SJ I still find it undoubtedly cool in its own right with some genuinely 10/10 character designs and this video gave me a ton of respect for Kubo.

Out of the Big 3, he was the only one to not have his drawing style get way more simpler and worse but overall better.

I froth with glee with how he incorporated cultural influences in bleach. And the music. Love It. I WISH I could streamline a storyline like he did. I love the character designs too

People these days do not understand how stressful anime and manga industries is and it takes a health toll from the authors

Rushed and pushed to his mental/physical limit since middle school. Even more respect for him getting burn the witch or possible bleach hell arc to work on his schedule.
