As a programmer myself, I wanted to say that it is a big burden to keep up a comunities anticipation and "hype". The fact that burn out is very common among developers, its most likely that, well to put it francly, the developers of hytale, at some point, probably at the peak of its hype, worked themselves out, to an extent of no return. Programming in it of itself is a huge thing to carry, not only that but also a gigantic community of players along with it, and the "self established" work hours, an almost endless amount of stress, is probably also the reason why they stopped posting as much. Cudos to them for even continuing to develop the game entirely. Personaly, I have had a community beforehand, even tho a fraction of that of hytale, and I have found the same issue tho I wish hytale finds a better end to its saga.

What worries me the most is a few long years in "early access" once it's released. Because it took so long to b released and they surely didn't have any time to early access Hytale to the community for further polishing. Which makes the expected 1.0, Full Release be even further away

I think Minecraft needs more "competitors", more voxel-based games like Minecraft, but without being the same mediocre Minecraft clone as most of them (besides, a "competitor" would help Mojang to stop releasing increasingly worse and less quality updates)

People need to understand that to make a game as huge as what hytale is promising is a lot of work. They want to give us a finished game on release which is, in my opinion, very respectable. They also have a community that asks for features like cross-platform, but actually gets mad when hytale is taking more time of developpement to implement those very features. If you are not happy on how fast the progress they are making, I suggest you to go get a CS degree, get a job at hypixel and help if you think you can do better. If you can't do better, just wait and play the games you already have (you know the ones I'm talking about, yes those you've been neglecting in your steam library).

i think once they realized they would be incapable of releasing the game in a reasonable amount of time without it being a disappointment, they figured the best strategy is to basically go quiet, let people kinda forget about it, meanwhile working super hard behind the scenes, and then once they get to the point where the game is extremely good and actually can (at least somewhat) live up to the hype, they can release something like an open beta announcement trailer or something, which will obviously catch the internet's attention, perhaps not quite to the level of the first announcement trailer, but probably still extremely good as people start to see it and are like "omg i forgot about this game! its finally coming out, thats sick!" and the word will spread and stuff, especially if the trailer is good and is able to demonstrate that they actually have a really good game to release and a definitive schedule for that release/beta or whatever they do. ultimately, i dont think there is any good reason for them to try to rush to get anything out right now, because the game has completely faded into irrelevancy for the time being, so waiting any longer is not really gonna make that significantly worse than it already is (unless they wait an absurd amount of time like 10 years or something obviously), so their best course of action at this point is probably to just hope that the strategy i hypothesized about here actually works out for them.
tldr i think hypixel studios' silence with hytale is tactical and theyll probably be able to revive a good amount of hype once theyre actually ready

  • @dovahfruit9503
    @dovahfruit9503 ปีที่แล้ว +1092

I'm just gonna say this before you guys start saying "they shouldn't have announced the game so early!":
They didn't announce it early, the game _was_ originally intended to release in 2020 (maybe even 2019) but because of the overwhelming response from the community they weren't satisfied with what the game was. high expectations proceeded by a flood of new recruits, the acquisition from riot and consequently a much bigger budget than they could have asked for, they decided to essentially rebuild the game from the ground up (an exaggeration of course, but they started remaking many ingame systems and eventually the engine itself as stated in the video). First impressions are important, and Hypixel wants Hytale to be the best it possibly can before people get their hands on it.
And if you say "They should've released it earlier and updated it like Minecraft!" as a response, that's not how it works. Once a games released its very difficult to go through all these massive time-consuming changes. Hypixel wants to be able to consistently update Hytale and ensure it has consistent support for all parts of the community, a beta is simply too risky.

    • @mcbyt

Yeah, the initial release was slated for 2019.
Though I will say, if "polishing" the game takes an extra 4-5 years, it was probably not wise to plan on its release that early anyways.

Their biggest problem was that the trailer was released strategically when Minecraft looked like it was starting to die down. Which is why there was so much hype. Because people were excited for all the things they would fix as you said in the video.
But when Minecraft resurfaced higher than ever 2 things happened.
    1. Hytale is less needed now that Minecraft is back in full swing.
    2. Hypixel aren't as focused on hytale because of how the server grew due to the Minecraft resurgence. Because of that hytale takes longer to develop and it cost them big time.

    @GAMAnimation_ ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have seen the video and, as an active member of the Hytale community, I would like to share my opinion about it. So before criticizing it, I'd start from the things you said that, to me, make sense. Hytale released is trailer too soon, and Hypixel Studio, did a poor job at analizing the impact that a trailer like that would have on the gaming community. Having said that the other parts of the video don't make much sense (in my opinion of course). In fact, it assumes that since the hype of the game has dropped, then Hypixel studio must necessarily give more content if it doesn't want it's game to die. But this reasoning can only be applied to a released game. As far as we know only a few people (beyond Hypixel Studio) have played the game, and if a game hasn't been released how can it be dead? It's like saying that a book that hasn't been printed yet will be a failure. On the other hand, if many people have forgotten that the game exists, when it will be released (and if it is really as good as it seems), the content creators will play it, the hype will rise again, and the rest is story. Another criticism I have on the video is that you consider Hytale a game distant from his community, howevere let's take for example Minecraft. Minecraft infuriated his community with the chat report system, with all the bans happening at random (especially in the Bedrock Edition, which is also the most played version of it), not even mentioning the PvP update, which has divided the community in half, and to which only one person (Jeb) works on it (and after more than a year and a half we still don't have anything official, just snapshots). Howevere in the end there it is, still going strong, despite all the controversies, Minecraft (fortunately) is still one of the most played games in the word. So being "distant" from his own community shouldn't be problematic, especially if we are talking about a game wich hasn't been released yet.
Then the video gets to compare a team that makes indie games with Hytale (wich btw consider himself a tripleA game) and how this indie game keeps contact with the community. It' simply not the same thing, it's like saying that Fromsoftware should have had weekly streams about the development of Elder Ring, and snapshot about how the game was (wich btw happened but are just some photos and 2 short videos). It isn't something that, in my opinion, you can do with project this massive.
If you made it here thank you, it mean that you care about Hytale (on a positive or negative way) and If you have any criticism fell free to write them in this comment section (possibly in a polite way)
Thank you for your patience. [Also sorry for any grammatical mistakes]

    • @mcbyt

Games can absolutely be dead on arrival with lack of promotion, even if they once had a thriving and eager-to-play community; for example, Duke Nukem Forever, which turned one of the most beloved FPS franchises into a ghost town.
While Minecraft has definitely divided it's community over the years, it's not distant; it's still very much involved and listening to the players, as shown by, for example, the mob votes.
Elden Ring did, like you said, keep up with it's community actively. See, Triple-A games have the resources to keep up with huge communities. Indie games have the closeness and familiarity with their community which allows them to keep everyone in the loop. Hytale doesn't seem to have either.

I think at this point it's actually not that bad of an idea for them to kind of let the hype fade and slip into the background for the time being, that way they can come out swinging again with something big when they're actually ready and can capitalize on it by having a close and realistic release date.
It's not that unthinkable that they could get a second wind if they suddenly release some massive content drop/release trailer, but if they try to keep the community informed and just trickle out teasers over the years then they won't actually have all that much new stuff to show when they're gonna need to get the hype train rolling again.
So I think they're actually doing a smart move here by not showing all their cards early, yeah it sucks for those fans who would like to follow along, but if they want to capture a bigger audience they will need to time it right.

They may take the long way aproach, a similar game took the same route, bendy and the dark revival, too many delays which was suppose to launch at 2019, and paired with controversies and little communication with its community, everyone thought it was dead, cancelled, then recently they finally released the game, it was a hit with several youtubers playing the game, so hytale still has a chance, the bendy community literally had a dark revival, so too can hytale.

Killing the hype for Hytale was actually done entirely on purpose by Hypixel. They stated in a winter blog post that the game wouldn't be ready for a few more years and that the scope of the game dramatically increased due to the expectations of their community. They stated in the same post that they would be attempting to kill the "feverish hype" going forward until they were closer to release. Rare posts is NOT a lack of communication, it's done entirely on purpose to keep the hype low. Once we get closer to release, I'm sure we'll get a new trailer and a whole slew of blog posts they hadn't put out to the public over their years of HARD behind-the-scenes work. They still interact with their community occasionally, for example, thankmas, or the interviews that happened a little while ago. They stated many times that they LOVE their community and the entire focus of the game is going to be on the community as a whole.
However, right now, it's better to stay quite because hype never helped anyone when they had to wait as long as I have. 5 years, to be exact.
I personally enjoy seeing little reminders of Hytale through their postcards every now and then.
Don't have any worry about it, Hytale has an amazing dev team of extremely passionate people and they know exactly what they're doing.
When it's closer to release, Hytale is going to hit the news in a way we haven't ever seen with a game before. All they need to do is release ONE trailer with a release date and ALL of the hype will return plus even more than the original.

Hype is overrated. It's only important to attract players at launch or to secure funding. If Riot is convinced the game is worth it based on what is being shown behind closed doors, then all the devs need is players at launch. It doesn't matter if they go dark for years. They will make a splash if their product is backed by Riot and plays as good as it looks.
I get it, it sucks being excited for unreleased content, but years of dripfeed is only better than years of silence (and vice versa) because the grass always looks greener on the other side. People just end up complaing about things being announced too early and being in development hell if you over communicate and deliver late. Everybody has a vision of the perfect way to handle that kind of situation but they're all going to eat flak. The best solution is to avoid that situation. Don't reveal early, don't hype early, have funding and significant progress beforehand.
Game's dead if they mismanage or lose funding because they can't deliver on a platform, sure, but hype is transient and easy to generate. It's a nonfactor. Personally I think ripping the band-aid off and going dark is the best move when you know you revealed too early to meet expectations.

I don’t actually think it’s a mistake to not post regular updates. As they are rewriting the code things will have appeared to have gone backwards which would draw criticism from those who don’t understand that it will create a more stable end result. Regular updates also risks burning potential players out, if you’re constantly teasing a game but never actually releasing then people will lose interest and dismiss the project entirely. Alternatively if they have a big media push just prior to launch it’ll generate far more hype. As for releasing sooner with an unfinished game, it’s far harder to regain the communities trust than releasing a polished title initially.

      Eh no.
There are industry examples that showed that staying open in game development is beneficial for the community but also for development.
Digital Extremes the company that created Warframe is literally proof of this, they regularly have "Devstreams" where the devs talk and announce the changes and developments for the game even if that content was to come out in 2 or 6 months we still have fragments or information.
And yet every year they have a special event dedicated in their community and announce the next content (Tennocon / Tennolive).
Digital Extremes was not a AAA company and it was only in 2020 that Tencent, the same parent company of Riot Games, became interested in them and acquired them.
Being radio silent for that long is so easy to screw up because you can literally tune out what your players want(Cube World) or get out right(Hollow knight).
But being open to development in an organized way only proves to be beneficial because it allows your community to follow the development and feel that despite being slow the progress is marked.

It's great that they are not rushing, I'd rather have a god game in 5 years than a bad one now.
It could be argued that their trailer was released to early, having now lost its traction. while that is true it also allowed them to get support from riot games (which you never mentioned i think). Riot is at this point a trusted company and they seem to be handling this project with care, not rushing development. With the support of such a trusted publisher and the name having be heard by a shit load of people, will probably mean it'll regain a lot of hype once we close in on release.
While the fewer dev updates are definitely less fun for it's current community, i'd argue it was a wise decision because they knew they still have a lot to do and the hype was already almost completely gone when they stopped updates. The main purpose of dev updates is to extend hype, but when it's gone already, it's wasted effort, especially when you have good things to bet on to regain hype when the product is finally ready (see prevoius point).

My first thoughts upon reading that post were "great, now the game will have to be reduced to run smoothly enough for crossplay" I'd rather have the game on one platform to ensure consistency and stability of the game. Redoing the engine to work on three different platforms and keeping up with all three is no easy task.
I was reading the comments and saw many talking about hyping the game up was the fault of the community. I disagree because the devs kept teasing features and talking about plans and whatnot so they were also responsible for the hype train that ensued. Then at a point they basically went silent. Probably realized too late that they should have been more reserved with what they put out.
At this point my interest in the project is low. If the game ever comes out then I will try it and hope it is at least decently put together since most games lately have been released as buggy messes. Even if they put years into the project it can still release as a mess.

Yall, can these clickbait "hytale is over" videos just end 🙄
The announcement trailer was like 3 years ago. Other less ambitious major games have taken twice to three times as long to finish.
