  • After many years of faithful service, Pioneer RTI no longer makes the Quantum caps and screws, which was an excellent low profile deformity system for scoliosis and other surgeries. They also make a Streamline system which is a more traditional screw cap system removable with most universal sets.
You need 2 special tools from Pioneer/RTI to remove the cap and screw. These tools are typically not found in a universal removal set.
    Here are the steps
    1. clean the scar tissue out of the cap.
    2. use gold handle T handle to remove the cam top turning it 90 degrees.
    3. use a tonsil to pay off the cap.
    4. there is a small swivel saddle underneath the cap that also has to be removed. it should come.off with the cap, but may stay on rod and be removed w tonsil
    5. remove all the scar tissue out of base of screw. 4 small recesses will be found at the base.
    6. align those recesses with the tulip using the swizzle adjuster.
    7. insert the Pioneer Quantum pedicle screw driver with the handle loosened counter clockwise.
    8. when the teeth engage with the 4 recesses, the driver will drop in a few mm, and you can then tighten the handle on the driveshaft so the splines spread out in the tulip locking it in place.
    9. unscrew the screw.
We have removal sets at Duke Raleigh Hospital for Pioneer available through the DePuy Synthes or Globus reps.
