For the fire cover, I didn't see if you tied down the horizontal sticks going across & sometimes you have, other times if you had it may not end up on camera, maybe because of repetitiveness?
I still wonder sometimes if notching out both ends of the sticks that're going to set on top of the other sections makes life easier so you may not end up with as many or any "rolling sticks"?
Something tells me if done, the horizontals might have to be thicker in diameter so as to keep some kind of structural integrity?
Not sure if I'm right though?

Great example of sheltering the fire. I am going to try this on my next rainy Scout outing (wait, that is all of my Scout outings). I am guessing that keeping the fire low is the key to avoiding setting the logs above on fire ... looking forward to finding out. Thanks for this one, classic overnighter in the woods ... now let's get out there and have some fun!

    • @cnrienzo
      @cnrienzo ปีที่แล้ว +1

Dave, if ya can't COMFORTABLY stradle the fire without inconveniencing certain self-bits you got a TAD too much fire, if all you are doing is cooking or heating water for coffee, etc.
And yeah, I know, as a Natures Classroom instructor i made the same jokes too about only 2 kinds of fire, 1) NOT big enough and 2) NO WHERE NEAR BIG ENOUGH!!
Which is NOT what I teach!!

For my money, this is the best video you've put out in 2023. You checked off all of the skill boxes you've previously taught us, showing how to apply them to today's (wet) conditions. I particularly appreciate how you created a cover for your fire, which you started with tape.
I've asked before, how do you orient the tarp to the prevailing wind? I assume the back goes toward the prevailing wind.

3:07 sheer lashing ending with a clove hitch and a stopper knot
    4:35 bowline
    6:03 marlinspike hitch
9:08 horizontal on a bipod - simple knots will do since the bipod's increasing width create its own tension
9:29 simplified square lashing tensioned with an arbor knot (?)
    11:38 duct tape fire starter
13:49 seasoning your food - the most important scout skill
14:28 no mess kit = no problem - "Do what you can, with what you've got, where you are."
16:11 Damn it, where's the bacon grease??
We just went over 90% of this with our scouts this weekend in preparation for next month's Camporee. Instead of duct tape, we use Fritos as a fire starter. Also first aid, knife & axe, orienteering, knots / lashings, flag etiquette, and scout history.
As a side note, at Scout's Own, 2 of the dads and a few scouts griped about the cold keeping them awake. The rest of us were puzzled since we were snug as a bug all night (SoCal March = a mild ~40F low).
    Be prepared.

Man, I remember when I introduced Fritos as a fire starter to the troop. The next six month we had bags and bags of Fritos to eat and start fires. We finally had to ban them for a few months. The look on the just crossed over Weens faces when the Fritos went up in flames was priceless!

I notice you've used several saws, including the outback pocketboy 170, but you tend to gravitate back to the Laplander. Can you talk a bit about why you seem to prefer that one?
