      @@TheKeenMechanic yes for sure! just a short question... in your overhaul you seem to re-use old bolts with extra angle when torquening.. shouldn't they be replaced? at least for example the bolt for the oil pump?

      @@ambientify Hi. Always use new bolts when you can. I always recommend this to all car owners but sometimes I am asked to reuse old bolts if they havent sourced new ones. Never had issues so far 🤞

    Great video! Just one thing to point out: the camshaft chain tensioner should be installed before you torque the camshaft sprocket bolts, as it is going to ever so slightly rotate the camshaft sprocket while tightening.

    Just a question regarding the end of the video... Where do you live? I was looking at the background of the video when you made the "testdrive"! Quite hilly scenery and in the beginning no real fields but no forest either (such a landscape has a name, "hed" in Swedish, Heide in German (Lüneburger Heide in northern Germany, Niedersachsen)).

    I'm moving back to Lithuania next week, looking for N57 engine'd F10/11 there to buy... The car market is insane, most cars on average have 300K KMs on the clocks, some - have had chains done, some haven't... Really struggling to find good compromise for price/spec/overall condition back there... Are these N57 chain stories with them going wrong or bad are that common, or they are a bit 'inflated' ? Do tensioner replacements help, or a good starting point to check before taking it to a garage for a full job?

      I think the long servicing intervals, hard driving, poor remaps/remaps in general, poorly manufactured timing chains, guides and tensioners for the N57/N47 engines. Yes, there are a lot of horror stories and unfortunately most N57 N47 fail prematurely above 100k miles some later like this one and some earlier. This one was serviced exceptionally well and lasted 167k miles. If you can turn a spanner try and get one cheap and replace all tining components preventatively.

    I have a 2014 535D ... what does this typical cost to replace the timing chains? Is it better to pull the engine or just the trans when it is just the timing systems being replaced?

      @@greglinarelli9401 prepare for £1500 to £2000 for labour and timing parts, all other parts would be extra. It is best to pull the engine out and replace sump gasket and all other gaskets and rinse engine

      Good question🤭
      It is hard to give an accurate man hours as I go into a lot of detail and also have to film everything which slows down the process. I think 50-60 hours if you are doing it for the 1st time and not recording. Hope you are enjoying the content and you can learn something from it🤝🏻

      @@Gaz5606 The cost of the parts alone for this repair with a discount was approximately £2000. All the internal engine parts -chains, guides, tensioners, oilers, gaskets were Genuine BMW parts. All other external parts were Febi bilstein. I obvioisly charged labour on top of that so it is not a cheap job but it was only a fraction of the price of what you would pay at the dealer. BMW had quoted over £9000 for this and you know they are not going to go into the detail you saw in this video. Hope this answers your question

I watched that whole video of yours today I absolutely love the pride you take in your work. If only all mechanics were like this.     Can you replace the main bearings in the N57 engine?

      You can replace conrod and main bearings on most engines. N57 is known for wearing these and spinning them if not done on time. On this occasion the owner did not want these replaced but would have been a good opportunity to do it when the engine was out and sump was off
