    Hey Dr. Grande. I'm trying to put different variables in the dataset as one variable with subgroups. Example: my data set has whites, Asians and natives as different variables but can I make them into one variable called Race where if I open the new variable I'm able to see these races as subgroups ?

    It may sound ignorant but i'd like to point this out: When you have reversed questions in a given questionnaire (eg Personality factors / 5 likert-scale), you "recode into different variable" and the new (reversed) questions are next to the original ones. My question is, where do you score the participants' answers in the data view..under the non-reversed questions or the reversed ones? Also, why the reversed variables are categorised as nominal? (since they're Likert) Thank you in advance and wish you the best for the new year.

    Dr. Grande. The biggest problem I have with computing variables and recoding them is the "why"? I find it difficult to mechanically follow a lesson without knowing why. Can you provide an answer?

      Our class asked a similar question--Dr. Grande is great at explaining the actual application, but it would be great to have the video start with a more narrative example.

      You mirhgt want to convert numerical variables because you have a questionaire which contains one control-question which is inverted to the rest. So the answers respondents give to this question will probably be reversed numerical wise, for example if you use a 7 point Likert-scale. To conclude your numbers. The answers given here must be reversed so 7=1, 6=2, 5=3, 4=4, 3=5, 2=6, 1=7

      Good question.The reason for recoding, I recon it is easier to make conclusions with categorial data compared to continous data.Lets say for example if you measured blood pressure of 20 people in continous varibles e.g 140,120,145,150, 80 e.t.c if you categorised data such that 80-100 means " low BP", 1OO -150 mean" high BP" etc you can be able to know what percentage of participants had high or low blood pressure after presenting the frequencies of BP_categorised.
      I hope that gives some insights..that is just an example.

    Are reverse scoring and recoding the same thing?

    Thank you for your great demonstration, dear Dr. Grande,
    It would greatly facilitate our learning process--and I would appreciate immensely--if you could share some sample files of both EXCEL and SPSS.

    Your SPSS videos have helped me a great deal. Thank you! I have one additional question about this topic: Says i have a variable with values 1-12, but by some mistake it turns out that category/value 9 and 11 actually represent the same thing and now i want to merge them. Is this possible? If it was category 9 and 10 i could select range, and make 9 = 9thru10. But how can i merge 9 and 11 (and keep all other values the same)? I'm stumped.

    • @mirikiri07
      @mirikiri07 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, i figured out the answer to my own question, by trail and error and dumb luck. The solution is: In 'old value' put 9 and in 'new value' you also put 9. click add. Then in 'old value' put 11 and in 'new value' put 9. Now 9 and 11 are in the same category (coded as '9'). The syntax looks like (1=1) (2=2)etc (9=9) (11=9) (10=10) (12=12)
