You know what, this technology is actually amazing. I remember having tons of these mechanical toys as a kid. I ended up trashing all of them when I moved out. I'm only now having a great appreciation of these things now lol
Those sound effects really bring me back to playing this game when I was a kid. I still have it, but it doesn't work anymore. I would love to get it working again.
I never realized the amazing level of electromechanical engineering built in to those toys. It's no wonder so many of them were thrown out once they were broken. Thanks for rescuing and restoring them and for sharing them with us Randi, good stuff indeed my friend!!
Thank you very much. Be sure and check out the other video of the TOMY mini arcade, Daring Driver. Unbelievable on how it works. You would never guess in a million years.
You really are a genius. This repair+restoration was a fascinating watch. I thought you were just being funny calling yourself a magician. I saw one of your other videos about catching fireflies, and now I'm eating my humble pie for breakfast.
I had Cosmic Clash and found your video while trying to remember the name of it. I'm sure it looks lame and slow to overstimulated kids now, but this was a favorite Christmas present that I still fondly remember. Thanks for the video. I am blown away at your skill and understanding of these games.
I had one (working) already in my collection, but won another (not working) with the original box for quite cheap on eBay. I mention it because it still had a KayBee store sticker on it. The original price was $9.99, although I imagine that was maybe a mark down back whenever Of course, in the mid 1980's $10 was equivalent to about $27 today (come to remember, that's about what I paid for it on eBay...lol)
OMG you weren’t kidding, that was absolutely diabolical in its complexity 😵 I removed the outer shell of mine as a kid just to see what going on inside, but thats as far as i dared go. even back then i knew i was way in over my head 😅 Outstanding job as always! 😁
I am watching a lot of your videos in the last weeks... I really like your work on this old robots and games, never get them as a kid and now there are still to expensive :D
You are absolutely amazing.😄 I had this game I think it was x-mas of 1983 or 84. I was very disappointed that it was not Pac Man when I removed the gift wrap.
Randi, your amazing! You refurbish so many fun things i wish i got for Christmas. Its amazing the "video games" of the past, tomy had the market cornered. They ushered in the real video games of the 80's arcades, but these were home versions! Then as technology changed, we began to see these toys change, from mechanical, to led screen lights i had 2 toys like that, i was popular in scool with them, being an electronics nut! It wasnt but centuries later, from led to actual pirtable screens! Watching Saturday morning cartoons, you can see the evolution, if video games change, nintendo had one pirtable game of mario bros. Others tried to follow, with stuff like hame gear with game cartridges, (of course there was tv consoles chasi h these tiny portable fun ones, i recall a pac man, led version, that was weird! Anyway i could go on and on! But I want to say, your amazing in the way you refurbish all these great things! I could spend hours in your shop, telling stories of the toys on your shelfs, and sone ive never seen like the golf game. The frivi g one i have seen on Saturday morning commercials! Played with in the stores, i did get a few. Presents to myself. Ok, thank you for your time, love these videos! So much info. So much to learn! Keep them coming please 😊🎉
It's pretty cool that now days you can 3d scan these little parts and 3d print them, too. Enough stuff out there now that you can basically build a total replica of these old games :) Cool video!
Working on this thing right now and it's definitely a pain in the ass.. but I'm figuring it out. Your video helped a lot, thank you! I have the same main problem with that gear on the firing mechanism always sliding.
I wish I had worm drive gears when I fixed it. I have a bunch now and have thought about going in and replacing them, but as you see... The thing is a beast.
@@RandiRain Oh yes, I had to take the damn thing apart like 30 times.. but I finally got it working good. I couldn't get the decals off either so I think I'm gonna do the same thing you did and create some repros to print off.
When I'm browsing eBay for arcade machines and parts there's one of these things thats always come up in the listings for years! Always wondered what it actually was. Seems mad that they shrunk pretty much an entire EM arcade game into a tiny plastic box.
I have one of teh Cosmic Clash units as well with the same worm gear moving issue you have. I hadn't tried glue or rouging up the shaft as you did, but I did attempt to try and use shrink tubing to hold it in place, but still didn't have much luck with it. Mine will work but with that gear off, it only engages occasionally and even then might be out of sync just a bit with the filmstrip too.
WHERE to start on this one!!! i was pretty sure when i saw the "miniphon" that you where knee-deep in...Sh@T hahha but come on now tomy really? using a dolls speech box to make a tabletop arcade? how ingenious!! guess nothing is to much for the Wizz !! bravo!! bravo!!! ( add clapping sound :P :P)
Why not replace the gear on the motor with a brass gear? Since it seems like every time a plastic gear is used on a motor axle it always breaks after a few years.
Randi, I have asked you a couple of questions before, and this one doesn't have to do with Cosmic Clash (which I opened up and tinkered with), but rather the Tomytronic 3D Sky Attack (which I see you have there). Have you repaired any of the 3D ones? My Sky Attack works, but it seems that the image(s) have been permanently burned into the display. I took it apart and everything seemed OK, except I didn't remove the top white part that the light comes through. Could that be where the problem lies? I'd like to fix it perhaps by buying a broken one and parting it out.... or is it better to just get another one altogether?
I've made a video on the Sky Attack, Thundering Turbo, and Planet Zeon. The best video is on the worst one of the games, and that's Planet Zeon. Horrible game, but in that video I finally figured out exactly how these games work. But there are other videos. Here's the PZ one... th-cam.com/video/VH0YRJiuQsE/w-d-xo.html
@@RandiRain Thank you! I watched the Planet Zeon one (I kinda like PZ!...lol) and took apart my Sky Attack again. The issue is the graphic card/cel, but I don't have the means to print out another as you did in the vid (very cool, btw). At any rate, I came across another affordable SA in great condition, so I'll keep the older one for parts. Thanks again for your great vids!
Woh ! Really impressive ! (and sorry for my "not 'english spoken', or something like that :) ) This kind of electro-mechanical "items" are really... smart, cleaver 'designed', I think so... And big 'clap-clap' for your ...'skill' :D (just something : I did not understant, about the 'recorder', if it is like a 'Berliner disk', like in the old walking pupett, or something more 'electronical'...) ...and one 'like' more, of course :)
@@RandiRain Ah, ok... I understand better (... I think :) ) ...and of course, I wanted to talk about " old talking pupett ", not "walking " (or both, maybe ? )
I don't get it. By the time these games came out, LEDs, microprocessors and electronic sound were widely used by other game companies. Coleco and Entex even had awesome, full color elecro-flourescent displays. Yet Tomy was putting out these Rube Goldberg devices. I never saw these two games, But I had/have Blip, Hit & Missile, and Digital Derby. I remember as a kid, they were problematic back in their day. The ones I have now, I fixed, work a little while, then develop other issues while they sit on the shelf. Plus these must have cost a comparative fortune to manufacture and warranty compared to solid state games. What was Tomy thinking? They do make very interesting pieces of retro engineering.
Hello Randi I am repairig such a Mini Arcade myself at the moment and it also has a missing battery door. Do you still have the STLl-files (or similar) of your 3D printed battery door and the scans of the stickers? If you do, would it be possible for you to send me a copy?
I have the STL files and the mold to make a door. You can contact me on my websites or my gmail account which is obviously somewhere, because people contact me on it.
Would it be possible for you to send me a copy of your scan for the stickers on the side, I'm repairing my dad's right now and the stickers were damaged. I got lucky my family had an old photo of the game from Christmas a long time ago, so I knew what to look for, thank you for the video it was a great help to prepare myself for the project.
Nice work Randi! Any plans on how to remove the sticker on that other game without damaging it in the process? I own a broken TOMY Arcade Attack, and I'm going to dismantle it, but I'm not sure how I'm going to remove these side stickers. I'm thinking about soaking it in WD40 or lighter fuel, or using a hot air gun maybe...
