  • This video shows more steam locomotives from all over North America that I think should be restored to operating condition.
Disclaimer: All Images and Songs used in this video belong to their respective owners.
Note: At the time this video was posted, my sources said that Pere Marquette 1225 was out of service. As of now this information is no longer accurate, as the locomotive is now operational once again.

You know you're a serious foamer when you suggest restoration of UP 9000. It can never run again due to its rigid wheelbase and most of these other engines won't ever be restored either. Cotton belt 819 is being restored to active service in fits and starts. They need a place to run. Restoration of a steam locomotive is an absolute logistics NIGHTMARE. You have to run the engines somewhere and that requires cooperation with class 1 roads. You have to have the infrastructure to maintain and house the thing and most importantly you need investors. Can these locomotives be restored? Yes, anything can be restored with enough money thrown at it. The point is, SHOULD any of these be restored? In short, no, not without a series of miracles.

@@justinratcliffe947 no, I'm not the pessimistic jerk of railfans. I'm realistic. They literally can't run 9000 due to the rigid wheelbase anywhere but on the plains. As with any project like this it needs a king’s ransom in money to return a locomotive to steam. Then there is the maintenance of said project.
Let’s face it there isn’t the money for basic preventive maintenance on those locomotives in store or on display now.
And as time progresses the skills needed to restore and maintain those already running are dying out.

Sadly the man who owned her passed and the P&LE was sold fully to CSX Where 643 resided inside the P&LE Shops in Mkeesrocks. After a snow storm caused the shed in 2009 to FALL ON HER She was moved to where she sat then. she is the most wasted potential of steam railroading ever. instead used for me to climb on as a kid growing up. good memories of mine but still sad she never got her chance

I've seen many locos that were once easily restored left out in the weather turn into a rusting hulk that was way too expensive to restore. With the cost of restoration as it is, a roof over them is an investment.

oh I would love to see the Allegheny h8 return to service but there are only 2 left and one is in no shape or form going to be able to be restored and the other is inside and would take an effort to move mountains to get it out if they even allow the transfer to happen from the henry ford village in the first place, but that said where would you run it the thing is a monster with a boiler rated at 8000 hp and said to be the biggest boiler ever put on a locomotive save for maybe the s1, the y6b and 1218 yea I could see that if you get a good drive behind it aside all the money factors and wishes, but if we can build stuff from scratch, the the wiscasset watervill and farmington engines in new england and scratch build the prr t1 there is not much we could not do, seems though as far as experimental projects there is a real lack of will from people in the usa yet in the uk and mackwell the continue pushing the envolope even though with some of the builds it is a blank canvas to put all the advancements porta came up with togather in one, it is however a matter of very expensive money to do the research and making of the parts for advanced exaust or a gas maker firebox, though the use of rifled or corrugated boiler tubes that would add even more effecency and perhaps power could be viable though more expensive.

Okay first of all, this is my version of the steam locomotive that would be restored because in this video it sometimes makes a tiny 0 sense for all of them to run again. remember how you can't rebuild everything?
    So here's my list:
    1. Pere Marquette 1225
    2. Norfolk & Western 1218 (Basically like Christopher Kovacs said in part 3 of Jim van der Kolk's Top 20 Favorite Steam Locomotives Video that it's not to big of a nightmare, it would be possible to restore it if you throw enough money on it, and many of the missing parts can be remade)
    3. Norfolk & Western 2156 (If it gets a new frame cast)
    4. Chicago, Burlington, & Quincy 3003 (Because we need a US 4-6-4 Hudson running an excursion service)
    5. Frisco 1522 (one of only 4-8-2 Mountain-Types to have been in excursion in North America. The others being Canadian National 6060 and 6043, and Illinois Central 2613 which is extinct)
    6. Southern Pacific 4460 (if enough funds are raised so it will run again)
    7. Texas & Pacific 610 (It is the only 2-10-4 that have operated in excursions, but hopefully someday it might make a comeback)
    8. Southern Pacific 5021 (If it gets a new cylinder or frame casted because when it was being moved back to the Rail Giants Train Museum (Los Angeles Country Fair plex), It damaged those 2 parts that I mentioned earlier, and we need a 4-10-2 in an excursion service one of those days) and Canadian Pacific 3001 (Because it is one of only 2 CP 4-8-4 left in the world)
    9. Santa Fe 5000 "Madame Queen" (we need another 2-10-4 in excursion service)
    10. Santa Fe 5011 (Same I said with ATSF 5000)
    11. Bessemer & Lake Erie 643 (Same thing with 5000 and 5011 maybe after it's cosmetic restoration, display for a few years, and when the Ohio Central Railroad reopens again) and Canadian National 5700 (They should restore it so it will be one of the CN 4-6-4s to run again)
    12. Western Pacific 334 (They should use it for excursions at a tourist railroad somewhere in California, and it should be another WP steam locomotive in excursion just like 0-6-0 #165) and Boston & Maine 410 (They should restore because it is one of only 2 surviving B&M 0-6-0s left in the entire world)
    13. Union Pacific 3206 (It needs to be the first UP 4-6-2 in excursions) and Canadian National 6400 (Since it's the only preserved streamlined Canadian 4-8-4 Confederation in Canada, It deserves a chance to run again)
    14. Nickel Plate Road 170 (It should be another 4-6-4 in excursions), Frisco 4500 (Needs to be restored by the Oklahoma Heritage Railway Association after they're done with Baldwin 2-6-2 Praire #207, and 4524 (If the St. Louis Steam Train Association is coming back, then they should restore it after they're done with 1522 if it gets new parts casted even though it is possible for this locomotive to run again)
    15. Cotton Belt 819 (They should restore it so UP may allow it to run on their mainline), and Western Maryland 202 (Because it is one of only 2 surviving WM steam locomotives, then they should restore it maybe at the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad in West Virginia)
    16. Grand Trunk Western 6323 and 6325 (6323 should be purchased by a different railroad association so it will be used for mainline excursions, and 6325 should run again on the Ohio Central Railroad if it reopens again)
    17. Santa Fe 3450 (They should restore it so it would be used for mainline excursions at a railroad association), 5931 (It needs to be the 2-10-4 Selkirk to run in Canada), and CP 2929 (It needs to be the 4-4-4 jubilee to run again)
    18. New York Central 3001 (It has to be one of the NYC steamers to run in excursion service), 6721 (It needs to be one of the first steam locomotives of the Adirondack Railroad in Utica, NY), and 5780 (It should run on the Arcada & Attica Railroad)
    19. Pennsylvania Railroad 460 (It should run along side 1361 and owned by the Railroader's Memorial Music for Mainline excursions), 6755 (It has to be another 4-8-2 to run again by different railroad association), and 4483 (They should run it on a tourist railroad that can handle gentle curves)
    19. Baltimore & Ohio 4500 and 5300 (They need to be one of the first B&O Steamer that has to run in excursions in the preservation era)
    20. Grand Trunk Western 8380 (It needs to be the first ever 0-8-0 to run in the preservation era) and Virginian #4 (They need to restore it so it will be the only Virginian steam locomotive in excursions since it is the ONLY one left IN THE ENTIRE WORLD) and Delaware, Lackawanna, & Western Railroad 952 (It should be the 3rd camelback locomotive to run in excursions at the Cape May Seashore Lines, Tuckahoe, NJ.)

So here's my take on this video. I think the B&O 2-8-2 #4500 would be a more appropriate and conventional steam engine to restore for excursion service on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. The CPR 2929 would be better off sold to a railroad museum in Canada where it belongs, because it is a Canadian steam engine, and not an American one. The Southern Railway 2-8-0 #385 could be restored as well, but being a relatively small engine, it would fit in perfectly with pulling excursion trains at either the Kentucky Railway Museum in New Haven, KY, or the Stone Mountain Scenic Railroad near Atlanta, GA. Finally, if the PRR 2-8-0 #7688 were restored to operational condition, then it would be right at home pulling excursions at the National Railroad Historic Site in Scranton, PA.

Most of those engines could not pull enough cars to pay for the insurance in this day and age. Restore an 0-6-0? Once you restore it what do you have? The idea of restoring a lot of those Locomotives is "rail buffonery" for people who stand around and take pictures.

1401 was put into place and the museum building was built around it. I think that the Southern looked into that.

I found a steam locomotive that should be restored in Washington Courthouse, Ohio.

Lemme guess, its one of the C&O Kanawha, right? Well, its not gonna run, for one, the local government do not want it to leave, and more importantly, its firebox grates were removed in the '80s - to be used on Pere Marquette 1225.

It's in too bad a shape, I'm afraid. The insides are badly damaged from the late 70s. 2100 is being restored to operation though!

I've read that we have around 150 steam locomotives in at least occasional operation in the USA. That should be enough, as there's at least one of every widely used wheel arrangement, so anyone can see one if they wish. Maybe the available zeal and money would be better used to build a replica of the Graf Zeppelin in time for the centenary of the Weltflug of 1929.

Canadian Pacific number 29 cannot be restored to running condition is impossible can only be used for static display. It was burned in a shed fire a few years back and to much of it was distroyed to ever be brought back. To restore this locomotive you would totally have to remanufacter the entire engine it is beyond repair.
