Piledriving climbing the leads!

  • Around 2008 during my pilebutt apprenticeship, I climbed the leads to instal a mandril for driven grout piles. This is something the piledrivers at our company do on a daily basis. We climb anywhere from 20' too 180'. I am no longer a Piledriver, I switched my books and became a crane operator.... but i still enjoy the occasional climb.

I had a waist belt in 1988. I was spraying ether on a enclosed piston link belt hammer on Lake Superior and the leads slipped into a water wash out. I hung upside down by my waist until a carpenter came up the leads to turn me over so I could climb down. The back harnesses at least keep you upright if you fall so you don't look so stupid. I was 19 and they all laughed at me to no end.

Dustin TheWind it’s because they normally use air hammers.

@@lorenzollamas2975 huh, I was wondering what that hose was for... are air hammers used because of emissions or something? Only ask because of how much time it took just to set up the one pile.
      Where is that?

Putting the wire in those pins is something I'v never seen !

He was weaving wire rope. I have never seen that either but if we took that long to drive one pile they would have fired us all. I drove 100s of piling at a sand mine where they ran 190 ton bearing for 100 feet and then got the 210 ton bearing they need and just used cotter pins. I climbed leads from 1988 to 1992 but I don't think people do that anymore. I just had to pull the pile under the hammer because they had no 3rd line so was not up there very long. A company I worked for in 2015 did that but I was only there for a few months for that reason. Unless something goes wrong, from 2002 on I have not had people climb leads. OSHA hates falls so piling are driven from the ground now.

We used #9 wire for that

@@williamrosenow6176 that's not one pile, this type of piling is called driven grout. What looks like a pile is actually a thicker steel can with a pulling collar on top called a mandrel. You drive it down while pumping grout through it to keep head pressure, once you hit a specific depth or blow count you pull it out while pumping grout to fill the hole. Then you lower in your steel cage. It's a cheaper alternative to steel cans. You only have to install the mandrel at the beginning of the job or if it gets stuck/bent/or broken. It's actually a lot quicker than pipe pile.

Cool job man, really curious on why the wire?
can't you use two bike locks or gun locks or structural bolts or high shear cotter pin or basically anything quicker?

Usually use layers of wire they tend to last the longest IME. I never saw it tied off like he was doing here but we've always used wire (just a different way), I rarely see any kinds of pins being used. They always brake apart or fall out and using wire in layers works well because it doesn't all break apart at once. It takes a lot longer to wear down and actually fall out rather than one solid piece. We have also used heavy gauge wire which works alright but even that is less reliable than lighter wire.

Any advice on what to expect during the hiring interview for the apprenticeship?

In my interview they had some hand tools laid out you had to name them things like soap stone pipe wrench and so on. Some situation questions like can a 50ton crane always lift 50tons? along with math questions. Then a interview with about 5 guys. Usually a contractor the agent an instructor and so on. I've been doing it for about 6 months now and I love it. I've made more in one week then I have in a month. Local 1847 up here in Minnesota!
