In retail, the managers often work the floor (yes, even the store manager where I work), so they believe us first when we say a customer was rude. Mostly, customers dare be rude to an employee in front of other employees. Had a lady raise her voice at me like I was one of her dumb kids. Right in front of my manager, who walked right up and asked if I was ok. Karen then ignored her when she asked if Karen was ok.
I mean, cameras still work and most of the time in places that serve food or beverages, a manager is also running the floor and other employees are present. Lying wouldn't go far

I'm so old that u would get soda and juice for free for being the DD. There is a benefit to a paid for sealed bottle of water, in a bar, where u can get dosed. And u can put it in ur purse when u go to the bathroom. And the glass doesn't have to be clean.
@@mongoliansummer3599It's not necessarily guilt, it's that most places don't really like you to loiter and solicit on their property. Most places in Europe take it more seriously and don't let people use the restroom unless they are a paying costumer.
Most of our local bars give free water and sodas to Designated Drivers in a group. I love it! But its free cups of water. Waterbottles are $3 and $1 for DDs!
So you would pay for it on your own coin? Its not your water to give away for free unless you are the owner. How old are you? That's not how things work.
I used to give out the PureLife water for free to police and regulars. Yes, I paid the owner the full cost of the case at his price. Honestly I made money on it. Bottles were about 20 cents apiece. Regulars would throw a buck at me from time to time and the police at the door would kick in too. Sometimes quite lavishly. One officer threw me a $10 as a group "we appreciate the thought"
Not when it comes to this entitlement. There’s been times I’ve handed out water to regulars and a few others. But even if my best regular cops an attitude like this Karen, there’s no free anything.
That fact that a 40 pack of those waters are like 4 dollars from Walmart or .10 cents a bottle and a bar is allowed to sell them for 3 dollars a bottle is the real crime!

When I was a regular at a bar, I never asked for anything. I didn't even use the military discount that was offered. But, as time went on, I would get free drinks, double Jack and Coke charged for single, and they gave me the discount once they found out I was a Veteran. I always tipped really well. Maybe this customer doesn't tip well, or that bar owner doesn't like to take care of his regulars.
She wasn't denied free water. She was denied a free bottle of water. Businesses must make money. As far as a veteran discount, the VA doesn't take care of us. I'll use any discount that exists.
This is a little different, but one of my local game stores gives you a $10 coupon for each $100 you spend. I went to another store one time and spent over $100 and wasn’t offered anything (trading card companies give game stores things specifically to give away btw) I knew I wasn’t entitled to anything, so I didn’t make a scene, but can you guess which store my family and friends have spent $1000s in, and which one we stopped going to? This is definitely different because you still had free water to offer, and if they actually know the owner they’ll probably be back anyways, but repeat customers are more valuable than a bottle of water, or in my case I would’ve been happy with 50¢ dice. People are usually happier spending their money where their business feels appreciated.
Gotta deal with these kinds of customers at my job on the daily. Prices tend to change due to availability, you know, supply and demand. They always pull either "im here every week/month i spend alot of money here" or" i know the manager/owner" and expect either a ridiculous discount or something completely free. Love using this type of example explaining why they're being ridiculous. Use gas prices changing or McDonald's new prices for examples on the "I shop here often" and tell them the manager set the prices and bring them out to tell them the same thing which they do.
I worked in our Galleria here in Houston (the nicest mall in town) at a store that sold fine arts and crafts. Really amazing stuff, they closed so they could retire. Anyway, people from all over the world shop there when they visit this mall cause all the designers have stores in this mall. People constantly came in and tried to "negotiate" on art we sold. The owner would just look at them and say "Would you go into Sacks 5th Avenue to Isaac Mizrahi section, pick up a dress, go to the sales associate and ask them to negotiate on the $5,000 price tag on that dress? " No, they wouldn't. We set our prices on overhead costs, salary budgets, etc. Just like the buyers at Sack's set their bases on similar things. Just cause in a small business doesn't mean I'll negotiate, I have to keep a close eye on my bottom line more than the big guys. That means those discounts and free waters add up and eat into your profit!
What ever happened to, "May I please have," or "I would like a bottle of water please?" This, "Can I get" stuff has always sounded so uncouth to me. If I were the clerk I would love to say, "I don't know. Can you?"
@@elizabethowens8548 Exactly. That part. That’s simply smart business and good customer service; which leads to customer retention. That would annoy me. I make it a habit to have a glass of water in between every drink. Never been hungover in my 44 years (23 years of drinking).
@billsedutto8824 yeah, it pissed me off. I've been a designated driver a lot and I've never had a bar charge me for a water. Most would offer me soda knowing I was the one having the least amount of fun lol

As a small business owner, I can tell you that one of the hardest parts in owning a business is the entitled bully customer. If you do a favor once, they expect you to do that from this time forward instead of being grateful for that special one time perk. We finally had to stop doing special favors at all.
This is exactly what most of these commenters are failing to understand!
Yeah I had a customer get sooo rude with me at my job bc my AM doesn't charge him for something extra, and I went to. "I'm SOOO sorry I didn't do you the favor we always do for you. I should just risk my job every time for yours and everyone else's sake! 😊" Some people suck. They'd rather someone lose their job than spend $3.
“I paid for another thing therefore I should get this thing for free”.
As someone in the industry 2 things I see going differently 1) you start talking about the grocery store and they go “see you get it !!!” & then try to walk away again
2) they tell the owner “Michelle refused to give me water and she told me to tell you!” *conveniently leaving out that you offered tap water*
Which why she's recording 😂 got to love them cameras!

Idk about this one. As a bartender, if someone closed a $100 tab with me and left a tip, I’m just gonna give them the bottle of water.
So you would pay for it on your own coin? Its not your water to give away for free unless you are the owner. How old are you? That's not how things work.
That’s really not how it works. You must be young
I bartended for over 20 years. A regular customer that just closed out their tab? Absolutely, I would have given them the bottled water too.

But, as time went on, I would get free drinks, double Jack and Coke charged for single, and they gave me the discount once they found out I was a Veteran. I always tipped really well. Maybe this customer doesn't tip well, or that bar owner doesn't like to take care of his regulars.
No the problem with her is the attitude to demand a free water.
And if the bartender doesn’t know her name, she’s surely not a regular.
She wasn't denied free water. She was denied a free bottle of water.

As far as a veteran discount, the VA doesn't take care of us. I'll use any discount that exists.
I also know the owner.
He said it’s my job to charge people money for their drinks; no exceptions.
Whats worse is when it is $5 and the bartender says ‘no we can’t give you a cup we only do bottles’ 🤦♂️
This is a little different, but one of my local game stores gives you a $10 coupon for each $100 you spend. I went to another store one time and spent over $100 and wasn’t offered anything (trading card companies give game stores things specifically to give away btw)
I knew I wasn’t entitled to anything, so I didn’t make a scene, but can you guess which store my family and friends have spent $1000s in, and which one we stopped going to?
This is definitely different because you still had free water to offer, and if they actually know the owner they’ll probably be back anyways, but repeat customers are more valuable than a bottle of water, or in my case I would’ve been happy with 50¢ dice.
People are usually happier spending their money where their business feels appreciated.
Look at it this way: Should she have to get in trouble for giving stuff away just because a customer is entitled?
The dispensary I go to gives me free bottled water and every Sunday Free product
Can’t hurt to ask
What ever happened to, "May I please have," or "I would like a bottle of water please?" This, "Can I get" stuff has always sounded so uncouth to me. If I were the clerk I would love to say, "I don't know. Can you?"
