    Model train operations session on my HO scale model train layout which is based on Colorado's Joint Line. Multiple trains from Burlington Northern & Santa Fe and Union Pacific can be seen operating over the my Joint Line layout. Some engines are still painted in their predecessor Santa Fe, Burlington Northern, Southern Pacific, and Denver & Rio Grande Western paint schemes as well as those of BNSF and Union Pacific. The layout is being built to replicate the Joint Line in the early to mid 1990s. This ops session is set in the early 2000s.

    • @Modeltrains
      @Modeltrains  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the compliment. Moving around all the time does prevent you from having a non-movable layout, but don't let that stop you. You can easily have a smaller modular or sectional layout that is easy to move. Plus you can concentrate on detailing and weathering engines, cars, etc so all that work is already done when you start building the layout. There will always be reasons to not start a layout. You just have to decide if you want one or not. Good luck with your assignment matching. Cheers, Kevin

    Just add some info about the CN unit, there were 2. The first one was a GTW SD38, paint GTW (a CN subsidiary) in the blue/red scheme. Originally built for DT&I in 1971 and became GTW 6253 in 1984, CN never repainted it into the red/black as it was sold to the RBMN in 2000. The second is an IC SD40-3, paint for CN with IC under the number in real life. Originally built as BN 6772 in 1976 and became IC 6160 in 1993, and rebuilt in 2000 as 6253 (possibly repainted at the same time from the IC black to the CN black/red).

    Love your layout especially the bn I used to have bn locos running down a branchline in Pensacola back in the 90s. How do you uncouple your equipment

    • @Modeltrains
      @Modeltrains  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Dalton Rhodes Dalton, thanks for the compliment on my layout. I manually uncouple my cars and engines rather than use magnetic uncoupling. Most of my cars and engines still have trip pins so they can use magnetic uncoupling if I chose to do that in the future. However, I've used both methods on several different layout over the years, and prefer manual uncoupling. But its really just a matter of personal preference. Cheers, Kevin

    • @Modeltrains
      @Modeltrains  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Steven Bruni I don't try to keep my roster completely up to date with the prototype as far as renumbering. I may renumber a engine or to because I'm trying to model a specific road number, but not just because the railroad did. If a manufacture happens to make the new road number, I might buy it if I need that type of engine. But then I try to not run the old road number engine at the same time as the newly renumbered engine. Cheers, Kevin

    • @Modeltrains
      @Modeltrains  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, depending on how many SD40-2s you put on the train and how long/heavy the train is. SD40-2s generally have 3,000 horsepower. In the late 80s and early 90s it was common on the Joint Line in Colorado to have 5 SD40-2s, or a combination of SD40-2s and C30-7s, on a train. Cheers, Kevin

      Kerry, welcome to the wonderful world of model railroading. There no one best way to get started, but I'll offer a few suggestions for you. Probably the single best suggestion I can offer is for you to read the book, Track Planning for Realistic Operation by John Armstrong. I believe it is currently in its 3rd printing. It is by far the best model railroad book ever written and has lots of good ideas and advise beyond just track planning. Next, you'll want to pick up some type of Building a Model Railroad Layout Step-by-Step book. There are several different ones but you'll want one that steps through planning, building benchwork, laying track, electrical (DC/DCC), making scenery, adding buildings, and operating your trains. Even though you probably won't be building a layout like the one in the book, you need something that covers all the steps necessary. From there, TH-cam has lots of good videos on scenery, benchwork, electrical, etc to given you more knowledge beyond what is in the basic Step-by-Step book. Finally, don't try to make too large of a layout to start. If you end up enjoying this hobby, your first layout won't be your last so don't try to make it too big or complicated to start. A small simple well running layout it more enjoyable than a large complicated poorly running one. Probably a good size to start with in HO scale would be something like a 10'x10' U, J or L shaped plan. Hope this helps, and again welcome to model railroading. Cheers, Kevin

    Great Ops Session Kevin!!! Two things I have noticed….Palmer Lake has some of the slowest joggers I've ever seen, and I do not want to be stuck at that grade crossing if I was in a hurry. Layout is looking fabulous!
    Quick question….In your main yard I noticed your track is set directly on the foam board while the rest of your track is on cork roadbed….How did you transition the track from foam board to cork? Im having a hard time with this on my layout.
    Thanks in advance….Joe T.

    • @Modeltrains
      @Modeltrains  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe T Joe, thanks for the compliment on the layout. On the transition, if you look at the shots of the mainlines as the go into the double crossover, they go down a short grade. I cut the ends of two of the Woodland Scenics incline starters for this. I haven't had any problems once I got it all aligned, but I took my time to make sure it was as smooth a transition as I could make it and tested it a bunch before gluing it down. Cheers, Kevin

    Maybe this is a dumb question since I haven't started buying anything, yet, but looking at it with an electrical knowledge background; Power to feed the motors in your locomotives comes from the track, right?
    So, how can you have two locos sitting next to each other, on the same track, and only move one?
    Also, how many controllers do you have? (unrelated, sort of) [that's what they call the knob-turny thing, right?]

    • @Modeltrains
      @Modeltrains  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +mahnarch Great question. There are two primary ways to control multiple engines on a layout. The older uses straight DC current and powers a given number of electrical blocks. The layout is divided into a number of electrical blocks and through electrical switches (think switches on a control panel not track switches though some track switches are electrically routing) the operator selects which block or blocks he is controlling at a given time. That way only the engines in those block respond to the throttle commands. However, the trend recently (and what I use on my layout) is Digital Command and Control (DCC). DCC encodes a small packet of information and sends it through the rails along with the normal DC power. A DCC decoder in each engine reads this signal which tells the engine what to do. If it needs to move or something, it applies enough of the power from the rails to move either slow, fast, or whatever speed the operator tells it too. The power is the same as in DC, but it is the combination of the DCC command station sending the info on what each engine should do and the DCC decoder determining what it is being told to do that allows all the engines to run independently. This is a really basic explanation. But there are lots of great web sites completely dedicated to DCC that will go into more detail if you want to read more on DCC. There are several good companies that make DCC systems. I've personally owned, and was happy with both, North Coast engineering (NCE) and Digitrax DCC systems. Hope this helps. Cheers, Kevin

    • @NarwahlGaming

      That's a lot of information to absorb. :D
      But, now that I have an idea, and a name of the system, I can go do some research.

    How many cars do you put on each of your BNSF Coal Trains? thanx, Matt

    • @Modeltrains
      @Modeltrains  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      railroadpics _ Matt, my coal trains usually only have 18 cars. I could run longer trains than that, but I find that with longer trains the mainline run "feels" shorter. With my layout I've found that 3 lead engines, 18 cars and 2 helper engines provides the right balance to feel like there is a long mainline run with long trains running over it. Cheers, Kevin

  • @trainfreak3985
    @trainfreak3985 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was wondering how many cars long you ran your BNSF coal trains and how long you made your passing sidings? I am just getting started in the hobby and designing a layout and currently have 43 coal cars and 4 BNSF locos to pull it, but I would like to build realistic (to the hobby) passing sidings and cut my train lengths down to about 20 cars. Anything will help! Thanks!

    • @Modeltrains
      @Modeltrains  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nathan Nathan, I normally run 18 car trains. The layout will accommodate longer trains, but the longer your trains are, the shorter the mainline is in comparison. I try to balance the look of a long train with the feeling of a long mainline. 18 cars and 5 engines per train seems to do that on my layout. If you keep the view of the train broken up where you can't see the whole thing stretch out in front of you, then you'll never know exactly how long it is when your operating your layout. You either be watch the lead engines, helpers if you have then, or just some portion of the middle. I don't have any passing sidings, but I've built the yard and hidden staging to handle 24 car trains. Hope this helps. Cheers, Kevin

    • @trainfreak3985
      @trainfreak3985 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I like that you use all those Dash-8 Units but i have a few questions. Are they atlas and if so do they have QSI Sound. If they have QSI I would like to know how you were able to speed match them to the other Manufactures you use on your layout. I have heard of people trying to speed match them and Completely fail. But Great video! I have been looking forward to one these on your channel!

      ***** Yes my -8s are Atlas with factory QSI sound decoders and they are speed matched to all my other engines. I did a video a while back on how I speed match all my engines. This is the same technique I use for my Altas QSI engines too. One extra programming note on the Atlas QSI engines though is you may have to turn off Regulated Throttle Control (RTC). The Atlas decoders have RTC and Standard Throttle Control (STC) modes. From the Atlas DCC manual: 4.2.6 Selecting Standard Throttle Control™ or Regulated Throttle Control™ (CV56.4). The differences between Standard Throttle Control (STC) and Regulated Throttle Control (RTC) are explained in Section 3.643. Follow the directions below to convert between RTC and STC when using DCC.
      • Set CV49 to 4,
      • Set CV56 to 0 for Standard Throttle Control or to 1 for Regulated Throttle Control.
      Note: The default is Regulated Throttle Control.
      Note: CV2, CV3, CV4, CV5 and speed tables apply to both Standard and Regulated Throttle Control.
      I change all mine to STC, but you may be able to speed match your engines with RTC depending on your momentum setting of the engines you're trying to match too.
      Here's my speed matching video. th-cam.com/video/QeZArBEqmMk/w-d-xo.html

    One thing that drives me crazy are people that call the comfort cab diesels 'wide cabs.' There's no such thing as a wide cab, it would have to stick out on either side of the sideframe.

    • @Modeltrains
      @Modeltrains  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      bcrnfan Canadian cabs or comfort cabs are commonly refereed to as wide cabs even though it is actually the nose of the engine that is wider while the cab is the same width as a standard cab unit. Both EMD and GE have used the denotation "W" on on some engines equipped with comfort cabs as in SD40-2W and C44-9W (EMD also uses 'M' as in GP60M). Most railfans and modelers seem to refer to these cabs as "wide cabs" more often than calling them Canadian cabs or comfort cabs. Probably because it is just easier to say even if not being technically correct. Cheers, Kevin
