  • Made in 1978 by Antony Barrier Productions for The Electricity Council, Play Safe warns children of the dangers of playing near overhead electric lines and substations.
The film combines live action with animation by the Brian Stevens Studio. A foolish animated robin is voiced by Bernard Cribbins. Brian Wilde, famous for his role as Mr Barrowclough in Porridge and “Foggy” Dewhurst in Last of the Summer Wine, voices an animated wise old owl.

We had Play Safe films in Canada in the 1970s as well.
Ours were produced by the War Amps, and mostly featured kids who had been involved in farm accidents and the like.
One or two had been run over by trains.

I first saw this in a hospital waiting area in 1985. It caught my imagination straight away. Stark in-your-face reality of the dangers of electricity tempered with the subtle but straight opinions of two cartoon characters voiced by time-served actors. All the ingredients for a public information film aimed at children and young people. A fantastic piece of film which needs more pushing. This film needs to be out there more.

Is it just me, or do Owl and Robin look like Rankin Bass characters in a way?

@@solangegriffin5894 At first, I thought they were going to be a last-minute edition and be pointless, but the relationship was actually wholesome where the Robin is young and child-like and the Owl is the wise mentor.

I know this is late, but I've just come across this while binging.
That amount of electricity heats everything to catching on fire.
