Yes bro. We need a tech TH-camr who is knowledgeable in the music production world and can run actual real world tests instead of just adding tracks on tracks until it crashes. Keep up the good work 🔥
Got M4 Pro and running 85 track mixing & mastering session all in one at 128 buffer. Running about 130 plugins and using 8x supersampling at master plugins. CPU at 70%, this thing is a beast.
That’s because it’s just audio files which also doesn’t really need to be real-time. One should learn how to use a DAW efficiently before asking if any computer is “enough” for music which is petty in comparison to video editing, gaming and 3D modeling/VFX. I’ve been working with DAWs since the early 2000s and my base model Mac Mini M1 with only 8GB of RAM destroys my older Intel based Mac Pro with much more RAM. Then again, I record real instruments and amps so I don’t have to deal with CPU intensive simulations.
FINALLY a real world use case for the base M4. I have an M1 MBP that just sits in clamshell while working with Logic. You got me ordering the mac Mini m4 Base. Thank you sir.

@@LDreTheGiant yeah it did man. My current projects have multiple instances of Ozone, Native Instruments Kompelete & Soothe2 on an old Intel i5 Windows laptop, pretty sure the Mac Mini base (I'm upgrading the SSD though) will handle everything I throw at it.
If you are starting out in music production, just buy a base M4 model. They are more powerful than the most maxed out Mac Pro's only 8 years ago!! The base model M4 Mac mini is totally enough for almost everyone for pro music production. I have made many albums on a 2020 M1 Macbook Air. I don't use many sound libraries, mostly audio, but some of the albums are 30 tracks of simultaneous audio with loads of plugins. Only a few times has the computer complained. Being an Air its 100% quite, so i can record with it in the room with the quietest of situations. The M4 base models are 30% ish' more powerful than the M1 MAX Macs!!!! 256GB internal hard drive is a bit small, and i do have a 1TB internal drive in the Air, but its no problem managing space, when you finish an album just store it on 2 external drives.
My issue is just jumping into the mac eco system with added cost of all the needed peripherals, mouse, keyboard, etc, not to mention hooking up my gear. But none the less one day 😅
Nice test. The base model Mac mini can handle a lot more stress on Logic. I am pretty sure that has to do with the optimization of Apple's DAW running on Apple silicon. It would be an interesting video to compare Logic and Ableton on the same Mini.
Ableton and Logic are 2 of the least optimised DAWs out there. Reaper, Cubase and Pro Tools all take full advantage of the efficiency cores. Apples own DAW doesn’t. If you watch James Zhan “M4 Pro vs M3 Pro vs M2 Pro vs M1 Pro” it shows this to be true. It’s just plain embarrassing for users of FL Studio and Studio One. They perform the worst out of all of the DAWs tested. Given the higher number of efficiency cores over performance cores on the M4, the differences will be even wider.
When you are in the mixing phase, the buffer is irrelevant because it doesn’t need to be real-time. Plus, the unified memory is so efficient and fast with Apples silicon that swapping is a breeze compared to traditional systems. Remember, this is audio so it’s nowhere near as CPU and memory/cache demanding as video editing.
My M1 is still running Logic flawlessly. I recommend something with a decent hard drive capacity as my production folders (between samples and stock sounds and project files) have obliterated the 256GB.
Coming from an Intel M4 base looks nice . New channel could be cool if it’s not music related tech but music related tech i enjoy seeing on this channel. I’d imagine most of us enjoy tech✌🏼
Yeah definitely good enough.. the storage is the only limitation as Apple is pretty good with handling RAM though 16GB is minimum... I am running Logic/Ableton on M1 16GB mac mini from a few years ago with no problems.... love your chords btw... very Brenda Russell "In the Thick Of It"...

With no glitches at all. So I would say yes its powerful enough to do what you do. Now I can not slap Ozone on the master without massive lag, which is nomal for Ozone on the master.

I would recommend OWC Express or Sabrent. and add the NVME drive of your choice. I guarantee it will change your workflow life forever!
I’ll be waiting for the twelve core 2 efficiency and 10 performance cores. ATM they’re running out the old 10 core chips. However you can get the 12 core in the Pro series for around $800-ish

Orchestral Libraries for me. I have a TB worth plus all my other stuff like IK live Max, Omnisphere, Arturia Belladonne, Native Instruments Komplete and anything else i’ve forgotten abt. It’s easy to eat up storage with this stuff quick.

In all seriousness, this thing should have no issues running Ableton. The fact that I can do that at 128 samples is nuts. Unless tracking vocals, I always produce at 1024 samples. Rarely 512. So at that sample rate, it should have no issues. I used to produce Edm on my 2015 mbp and that thing didn’t even stutter with 40 plus tracks loaded with kontakts and stuff. I don’t need it and I’m considering getting one of these haha
Thanks for info. Any comment to ableton writing a more accurate LIVE version that optimizes the Apple M chips? I bet there’s resolution in the code for cpu utilization 😮

@@LDreTheGiant true, i forgot they had a M4Pro chip. I’ll definitely look into it more. Good video by the way, i use Ozone as well. Appreciate the recommendation bro. 🙏🏾
Do not get that USB SSD, it has issues, people have lost everything on their drives. Besides, Zike or hyprdrive, enclosures with NVME slot, will give you read/write speeds that easily covers the need for plugins and project files, faster than the internal 256GB drive of the base model. I would recommend against going for 256GB internal drive though, even with an external drive. You need your system and a couple of softwares to fit there comfortably. Sure there is the option of moving the home folder to an external drive. 16GB of RAM while a clear step up from previous generations, will in many cases become a bottleneck. And if you use Ableton, Logic, Studio one, for example you should really get the M4 Pro CPU. it comes with 24GB or RAM and 512GB of storage. The RAM is still on the low end. But the important part is that Apple has two CPU core types in their CPUs, Performance cores and Efficiency cores. Some DAWs like Cubase, Reaper and Pro Tools can use both core types at the same time, but Ableton, Logic, Studio One and several of others can only use the performance cores. M4 Base has 4 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores. M4 pro 12 core has 8 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores. You can get up to 2 times the performance in some cases even more (because of quicker RAM), by going for the M4 pro over the M4 base. I would say though go for 48GB of RAM before going from 12 to 14 core CPU (unfortunately there is no 32GB option). The M4 base is overhyped. if we were still in the days of people having a desktop at home, it would be a cool starter computer as it can easily do websurfing, and even some light productivity tasks. But today people do those things on their phones, tablets, or want/need a laptop. The RAM and storage of the base model does not do the CPU justice. But if you upgrade both of them the relative price difference up to the M4 pro makes that a much better alternative. Yes it is really impressive what the M4 cpu can do, but you need a system where you can to those things and 256GB / 16GB is not that system.
Couple questions because I am new to music production and mac. where can I get the mac mini and be able to choose the most RAM I can get with a 1TB internal ssd? Another question can I store all my plugins and sounds on an external hard drive? Also is there a way to load all my programs such as FL Studio or Logic on my hard drive as well?
Do not make another channel, there are many people that will appreciate tech and music production topics mixed together. I'm a software engineer and a musician trying to learn music production so this content is kind of perfect for me. I just got the Mac mini M4 base model!
6k for a laptop is crazy. I want a Mac I just HATE their business model and upgrade model, it's so evil and scammy but DANG it. The fact is they make everything in house, which means when they make let's say the M4 chip, they hand all those specs over to their programmers and the programmers make specific code in the kernel to handle that specific hardware, what does this mean? Much better performance, everything works together in tandem. The kernel is basically the software that talks with the hardware and makes everything happen in your OS. With a PC, windows has to make a kernel that needs to be able to talk to many different types of hardware. A Mac doesn't have this problem, along with "unified-memory" it means smoother, faster and better performance. I don't know man, 6k for a computer of that spec is highway robbery, but damn it if Mac isn't just a productivity workhorse and I wouldn't be distracted by gaming like on my PC.
It’s only 6k if you add a crazy amount of storage/ram. Go and actually configure it and see. Also, you don’t need the max chip for the GPU if you’re doing music.
Would u happen to know how much stronger itd run FL if i upgrade to the m4 max? I got no clue if the 800$ upgrade is worth the performance boost in DAWs

@ I’m over here getting ready to wipe my pc and do a fresh install of windows and I’m like…should I just buy this instead?! 😂
Thanks for info. Any comment to ableton writing a more accurate LIVE version that optimizes the Apple M chips? I bet there’s resolution in the code for cpu utilization 😮
7:56 spec wise if you want more ram and a faster chip the base mac mini pro is a better deal.
might have to switch to the mac mini
Do you still have your Ableton Push and if so do you still use it?
I do! Ive just been taking a break from it using the Ableton Move instead
Whats hapnin bro. I just found your page and subbed today. I wanted to ask you what's a good device to start making beats for beginners? I heard a macbook but i can tell you know your shyt
What bass did you use? It's Hella
Kee bass its free!
@LDreTheGiant you a real one 🤜🏾🤛🏾
I have a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro Chip) I’ve been lowkey thinking about getting this, and sell my MacBook.
If you do I’d try to swing for the M4 Pro version to balance it out
@@LDreTheGiant true, i forgot they had a M4Pro chip. I’ll definitely look into it more. Good video by the way, i use Ozone as well. Appreciate the recommendation bro. 🙏🏾
What music distribution would you recommend?
Do it with all the new updates on fl studio !!
P.S., I also recommend getting as much ram as you can afford. That is where the real power lies. 🎹💙
Just do a separate playlist for all tech related info.
And right now logic pro for ipad is sick
I agree but until they move to a one time purchase I will never play in that sandbox. SAS is an evil model.
Now questions is how IT works with another DAWs e..g. Studio one 7 pro
Keep one channel for all.
Can this support plugins, vocals and mastering? The specs are amazing except for the hard drive size
how many simultaneous INTEL VST instruments and the effects can it handle?
Would you recommend this to someone who doesn’t all basically make beats record and mix?
only issue is that damn storage lol
I dont like running things off external hard drives because of speeds.
16gm ram.. is criminally low if you're in music production. especially when you're using a lot of kontakt libraries.
Would u happen to know how much stronger itd run FL if i upgrade to the m4 max? I got no clue if the 800$ upgrade is worth the performance boost in DAWs
Mid 2012 MacBook bro over here😢
I rather get this than a macbook air
But could it still run my PT SESSIONS better than my HP laptop 💻 that has 4 core 16 GB ram?
