I'm in my 70s and even in College History classes we were told the indigenous people of South America left their cities because of "slashing and burning" the forest and ruined their farmland. Therefore they had to move around to survive. That burning the forest and bad farming practices was their downfall. That notion always bothered me. I grew up on a farm, my parents, grandparents were farmers. Not many had much schooling but they knew land! My Grandpa taught me a lot. He said "Lakes roll sometimes and the water looks bad, tastes bad, but the land rolls too." So I believe people who work the land know it better than any scientific guess, they knew exactly what they were doing! Terra Preta!
