    Hello Tammey, I just now found you by accident and happy I did. Thanks for the introduction.
    I started quilting 19 years ago, I don’t pre-wash, starch and have never put water in any of my irons. My first iron lasted 17 years. Last year I started buying vintage irons (thank you Lori Holt) from the 30s and 40s and I love them. They get extremely hot, ouch, and are heavy enough to give you a nice flat block.
    I look forward to watching your other videos and checking out your website.

    I have so enjoyed finding your channel. I am 79 years young and you inspire me. With two reversed shoulders and a stroke on the left side. If I think I can't, you tell me . . . one thread at a tike and one stitch at a time. I also used to love cross stitch. After watching your floss videos, I am thinking of giving it a try again. I am working on t-shirt quilts for family members. Thank you Tammie for all you add to my days.

    Tammy, thank you so much for informing me the issues about pieced backs. I’ve had difficulty with my local Quilter cutting off designs. We’ve talked about it but she didn’t explain it as clearly as you did. I am working on a Oh Quilt right now that’s a collection of mini quilts and a piece back with history. It will be difficult for my long arm person. I am hoping it works out so I can enter it into the show. Thank you thank you thank you.

    • @tammieearnest
      @tammieearnest  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Add lots of extra fabric onto the back that can be cut away once the quilting is done. The longarmer will be able to center your quilt top onto the backing much easier if there is a lot of buffer room on the quilt back. Hope this helps.

    I’m planning a hand sewn denim patchwork. Usually I don’t put backing or batting on my denim patchwork because I like the floppy blanket feel.
    My test pieces on this one though have made it clear that it’s going to require a backing. I just can’t make the stitches neat enough on the back side.
    I’ve learned so much from your videos. They are really helping me think through my designs and when I get to that point, it will be a huge help in deciding how to best go about backing it.

There were spaces open down the sides. I’m not sure I like that look and probably, I would make sure I could run it off the sides next time I use that design. =)

    I just found you this morning and enjoyed your video very much. The only problem is I watch it on my laptop and the volume is so low it's difficult to hear you even with my PC audio up to max. I hope this is something you an adjust from your end. Looking forward to more videos from you.

    If you can please give us some information on what makes quilting a quilt. It's not necessarily the pieces of material patterns but it's the. Sewing design that sets it up to be called a quilt...

    • @tammieearnest
      @tammieearnest  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a great question! I have not researched the "official" definition but here is my own interpretation of a traditional quilt. A quilt consists of three layers: a quilt top, batting, and a backing fabric. The quilt top is usually a pieced design that is made up of smaller blocks arranged in a pleasing pattern. The three layers are stitched together, either by hand or by machine, many times creating a secondary design with the thread.
      BUT this is a very loose definition because quilts can be tied in a grid pattern creating a much "looser, fluffier" look. Also, quilts can also be made with one large piece of fabric with a fancy design stitched through the three layers making a "whole cloth quilt". So the definition of a quilt can be very broad.

    Hi! Tammie, how do you charge for quilting? If someone sent you a completed top, batting and bottom attached or do you send them unattached?

    • @tammieearnest
      @tammieearnest  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would like each piece seperate from the others. I load them individually onto the bars of the longarm. I charge 2.5 cents per square inch. So a 50x50 quilt would be 2500 square inches x 2.5 cents = $62.50 plus return shipping costs. Here are my Longarm Prep mailchi.mp/0077e8fff634/longarmservicesinfo

    I am unsure on thread color to quilt with, do you mostly use a light color on your quilts?
    Is it rule to not have thread stand out on the quilt?
    Thank you
    Enjoy your videos

    • @tammieearnest
      @tammieearnest  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jackie! Thread color is a personal choice. I evaluate each quilt differently. USUALLY I try to blend the thread with the quilt TOP, so that may mean I use a cream, light gray, dark gray, pink, white . . . It really depends on the quilt. On one of the quilts in this video, I used a wintergreen thread that blended with the back but was visible in the top. However the top was busy so it wasn’t overpowering. But I have clients that WANT color, so I have used red thread on a black and white quilt, burgundy thread in a cream top, black thread on a farm yard print, etc
      So it really is a personal choice and it does take some experimenting. I’ve been nervous a few times with bold colors but the result has been beautiful. Even white thread can stand out on a quilt top! I “audition” threads by laying them across the quilt top. Don’t over think it, you’ll learn what you prefer overtime.

    I never starch or wash my fabric. I have been quilting over 25 years. Only if I think a fabric will run then I wash it. Never wash flannel either. Buy good flannel and you won’t have a problem. My quilts alway wash up nice. I never put them a drier either. I always wash my quilts once it is done. That is what I do. What ever works for you.

    Do you have long arm issues or recommendations concerning vertical seams on a pieced back?

    • @tammieearnest
      @tammieearnest  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it is one long vertical seam, I will try to pick a design that is not directional so that I can load the quilt with the seam horizontal instead. If it's not possible, just be careful when rotating the quilt that the sides are pulled taut. The tendency will be for the fabric to draw up all along the seam. I have made canvas leaders with a dowel rod pocket for both sides of the quilt. I pin these along the right and left edges of the quilt and attach my bungee cords to the dowel rod. These help tremendously in keeping the fabric taut and in the correct place. You might also see my 4 part You Tube series about how I load and quilt on the longarm. Hope this helps Pam.
