I always try and draw mignola esque and it’s a real challenge, especially if you’re not me and you do more work that is nothing like mignola. His style is very much stooped in abstracting his figures in shadow and strong shapes, not entirely concerned with what should be shaded, and instead what’s interesting. Your second drawing was a lot closer to getting mignola for sure. I saw someone else say the heads should be smaller for mignola, but also I think something to keep in mind is that something I’ve noticed with a lot of his heads is they tend to be (at least in earlier work like a lot of what you looked at here) more kind of slim rectangles, and the chins don’t tend to taper that slim. Newer mignola is even more challenging to get, because it’s still mignola, but even more abstracted, also you did a great job here!! Really love how your drawings turned out
Thank you for taking the time to watch and give feedback. I actually tried a second time in last month's challenge. Didn't really get much closer in the Superman, but the woman looked better.. lol It's such a tempting style to try right? I bet I'll try again ;-)
Mignola heads are smaller than you drew: the ratio of torso size to heads for heroic figures like Superman, is much different than real life. I think it's why you weren't happy with your first attempt. The head should be small, like how his hands and feet are small, but the torso esp chest is huge. Makes Superman look swol!
Been slowly getting back into drawing as an adult, inspired by Mignola's work. This breakdown was really helpful. Thanks!
Thank you! Glad I could help. Enjoy drawing!
This is really awesome!! Please keep up the great work. I'll DEFINITELY be returning for more Mignola
Thank you!
You are outstanding
Thanks for the compliment and for watching!
