  • We came upon four lions walking together, possibly looking for prey, even though their bellies looked full. The group consisted of a large female (the leader), two juvenile males, and a cub. We first spotted the two males crossing the road and walking back into the bush.
Later they, along with the female and cub, emerged walking very close to the safari vehicle in front of us. We were surprised at how nonchalant the lions were as they passed within a few feet of the vehicle, particularly since a guide was in the spotter seat outside the vehicle. He also didn’t seem to mind and in fact enjoyed their proximity. The cub was in a playful mood while the older lions seemed to be on a mission.
We departed from the group as they walked off into the bush. We discovered later in the day that they had succeeded in their mission, the killing of a kudu antelope.
This experience was part of The Great Southern African Safari organized by G Adventures working in partnership with National Geographic Expeditions.

We don't control how close we get to the animals. We were relying on our safari guides who know these animals better than anyone else. They've been doing this job for many years and know how close they can get to the animals safely. We trusted them completely.
