Woodlore VS. Puukko Knife | Bushcraft Coffee and Spoon Carving

  • For part 3 of this comparison mini-series, I decided to throw the Woodlore style knife against the Puukko style knife. In parts 1 and 2, I focused heavily on fire craft, creating fire with bow drills, so in this episode, I decided to focus on their woodworking capabilities and carve up a quick spoon. The Woodlore design is the Ray Mears knife, a hugely popular British survival and bushcraft expert. The Puukko design is a traditional Scandinavian knife that was their "do all" tool.

And if you decide to purchase a GWK knife, let them know SurvivoTek sent you!
As nice as fire prep is to test a knife, nothing gives you an idea of its balance and performance like carving with it. It's amazing how quickly your hand learns where the blade's edge is and how the knife handle locks in when carving something like a spoon. Not all knives are well suited for carving, but because both the woodlore and puukko have Scandinavian grinds and thin blades with full comfortable handles, I was very confident they would both be up to the task. So after my bushcraft coffee, I found myself a nice fallen branch and processed it down into a spoon using the "burn-in bowl" method.

Not sure about what you was taking about or if there was a battle between these two knives. I must of missed it all. Tump down for fake title.

I cannot understand why people take Tom, Dick and Harry knives and describe them as Woodlores!! Theyre not!! Get a genuine one, use that and then do your comparison!!

The morning was lovely. Happiness itself, it seemed, hung above the ground and, reflected in the diamond dewdrops, beckoned the soul of a passerby to itself ... The forest, shrouded in morning light, was quiet and motionless, as if listening to my steps and the chirping of the bird brethren, who greeted me with expressions of distrust and fear ... The air was saturated with the vapors of spring greenery and caressed my healthy lungs with its tenderness. I breathed it and, looking around the expanse with enthusiastic eyes, I felt spring, youth, and it seemed to me that young birch trees, roadside grass and cockchafers buzzing incessantly shared this feeling of mine. “And why is there, in the world,” I thought, “a man crowding in his cramped shacks, in his narrow and cramped little ideas, if there is such scope for life and thought here? Why doesn't he come here?"

Nice video. Check out Pekka Tuominen Custom Knives if you want to see the top in puukos. I have one of his and I can tell you it is something else. I can compare it to well over 100 knives. In terms of cutting wood, there is nothing close to it.
