Friends don't look at each other that way (especially how Lan Zhan looked at Wei Ying), plus, there are hints at it being more than friendship interspersed throughout, not the least being Lan Zhan gifting Wei Ying with two roosters when he was drunk (chickens were traditionally a part of the gifts given by the groom to the bride in China). Not to mention, I have read from people in the know that more romantic scenes were actually filmed for this drama, but then cut out because of the censorship.
