While he was considered a villain to the clans because they misunderstood him and everything was being manipulated so he was seen as the bad guy, he was never the real villain. All he ever wanted to do was protect those innocent members of the Wen clan that were being blamed and persecuted for what their leader and his soldiers did, and live his life in peace, while keeping yet another selfish and power hungry ruler from getting yet another powerful tool of destruction. Yes, he used a dark art to protect people and to get his revenge on those that hurt him and his clan, that's all he was willing to do with it. He was never after the other clans, or wanted the power to rule over anyone. He was more of an anti-hero than a villain. A misunderstood person who was actually good at heart but forced into horrible situations and to use unorthodox means of getting out of them. Sometimes the choice was to either to go with the masses, or go against them and stand for what he believed to be right. Sometimes he was forced to protect himself and it got out of hand, and in those cases the situation was always escalated by that person trying to set him up and he was blamed for it. I wish more people could have seen him for who he truly was and not what he was being made out to be. Only a few truly stood by him and most of them tragically met their end. I'm glad at least Lan Wangji stayed by his side and Wen Ning survived to help him in his second life so he could eventually clear his name.
