Pentair SUPERFLO® VS (VST) Variable Speed Pump Operating and Programming

  • The Pentair SuperFlo VS Variable Speed pump is very easy to program and set up. Pentair has gone to great lengths to make this pump as user friendly as possible. The programming that I show is based on the pump not being connected to an automated system like the IntelliTouch or EasyTouch, for that set-up you will need an External Control Wiring Kit.
    I think most consumers will be using this pump as a stand alone and the video will cover the programming of the pump. The Control panel as been simplified for easy set-up so the first thing you will need to do once the power is on to the pump is set the clock. Simply press the “Display” button for 3 seconds and then use the “+” or “-” to set the clock to a 12 hour or 24 hour time format. Then hit the
    “+” or “-” to scroll the time up and down. Hit “Display” again to lock in the time you set.
    The pump comes with a pre-set default programmed run time:
    SPEED 1 runs for 2 hours at 3000 RPM
    SPEED 2 runs for 10 hours at 1400 RPM
    SPEED 3 runs for 2 hours at 2200 RPM
    You can just use the default run time or simply program one of your own. One thing to note and it is important: the pump will not run at all unless you hit the “Start, Stop” button. You will see a green LED light once the pump is turned on by hitting the “Start, Stop” button. Just remember that after initial set-up.
    Also not that each SPEED button must have a program run time. If you only want to run 2 speeds, simply set one of the three SPEED buttons to 0 RPM. Just use the “-” button until the RPM zeros out on that button. IT doesn't matter if that SPEED has a run duration, at 0 RPM it will not engage.
    To enter a Custom Schedule make sure the “Start/Stop” button is not illuminated. Now you can program each button by pressing it once. For example:
    Hit SPEED 1 “1” button, the LED will blink - now use the “+” and “-” button to set the RPM. Press the button “1” again and now you can set the start time of SPEED 1. Use the “+” and “-”
    Press “1” button again and now you can set the run duration - use the “+” and “-” button to set the run duration.
    You would simple repeat this process for SPEED 2, SPEED 3 and the “Quick Clean” button.
    The “Quick Clean” button is used as a “Time Out” button found on other Variable Speed pumps. By hitting this button you override any program set time and if the pump is off, it will turn on. You can set the “Quick Clean” button to any speed and duration but I recommend 3450 RPM for 3 hours. This is a good button to press when you add chemicals to your pool or when you want to use your attached spa. The 3450 RPM is the pumps full 1 ½ HP speed.
    I also touch on using the FlowVis Flow Meter to set your pumps run time specifically for one cycle of water. Using a flow meter like the FlowVis will allow you to set your pumps run time exactly in

    So my 10 year old AO smith pump went out the other day and I needed a variable speed pump immediately because my pool was very green. I went to pool stores etc and no one could help me for about two weeks, so I went online, purchased the Pentair Superflo vs. The pump arrived two days later from Amazon (free shipping). I installed the new pump with new plumbing and electrical in two days. TOTAL COST of Pump/Plumbing & Electrical was $769. This was a $500 savings. I would not have done it without David's tips on installation. KUDOS TO DAVID!!!

    Installed this pump along with the Flowvis. Surprisingly using your settings I'm getting 50 GPM at program 1 and 20 GPM at program 2 with the Skimmer and Kreepy on. With the Main Drain and Skimmer it's much more GPM and 95 GPM in the Quick Clean mode.
    The Flowvis really takes the guessing out of how long you should run your pump for a full cycle 👍

    I have a salt system pool and just had this pump installed on friday. The tech set it at Set1 2200 rpm for 6hours (12am-6AM), set 2 is 2700 RPM for 14 hours(6AM-8P) nd set 3 is set for 3000RPM (8PM-12PM). Is it me or does this seem like the system would be using more electric than doing me good? They did say that the Pentair should really be running for 24 hours a day rather than powering off for so many hours a day Please advise if i should manually adjust the RPM's.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is an option if you have an automated system connected to your pool equipment. The Automated system like a Pentair Easy Touch will override the pump panel and you would run it from the Easy Touch.

      It would be best to go with a Hayward VS pump so that the communication is flawless. The Superflo VS was primarily designed as a stand alond pump without automation. Even connected to Pentair automation it is limited. The Hayward Super Pump VS 700 230/115V (Expert Line) Item # SP2670020VSP. This VS pump is comparable to the Pentair Superflo VS. It is only sold at retail pool outlets and not online. They come with a 3-year warranty. If your going for the Superflo because your pool equipment is 115V you can also get the straight 115V model: Super Pump VS 700 115V (Expert Line)

    I have this exact setup. But I put the flow vision after the filter. Also why do you need to have the high rpms for 3 hrs? Why can't you just leave it on low rpms all day?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can leave it on low all day but this pool has an automatic cleaner and it needs some run time on high speed to operate. Also, just on low speed all day you will notice that the pool gets pretty dirty unless it is screened in. The skimmer works best when running on a higher speed for a couple of hours a day.

    • @iamomeed
      @iamomeed 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh ok. If the pool cleaner runs with a Booster pump would you still need high rpms?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the booster pump needs the VS pump to be at around 1800 RPM to move the pressure cleaner effectively.

    • @SPL

      Not really. I like a good flow during high speed so the surface gets skimmed. You can set the high speed lower if you like. I wouldn't set the low speed much lower.

    • @SPL

    Stupid questions from a new pool owner here (21,000 gal vinyl):
    -would programming the time matter if pump is attached to Intermatic timer since it will cut the power at certain time anyway?
    -when it first cranks up, it goes to prime, then speed 1 (let's say set for 2 hrs), then speed 2 (X how many hours)?
    -follow up to question 2, how long should I run the pump for each speed for a day? I heard it depends on the season/temp.
    TIA

    • @SPL
      @SPL  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Take off the intermatic on/off trippers and leave that on. That will solve the first issue of it turning off the VS pump. For your size pool I would set it on low speed for 12 hours in the Summer- 1700 RPM and then a medium speed of 2300 RPM for about 4-5 hours each day. That sounds like a long time but the energy use is about 2 hours of a standard pump.

    You show a graphic at 5:25 with a 14,000-gallon pool and a program that filtrates/circulates 14,400 gallons per day... I have seen videos claiming that pool owners should run the pump for double the size of the water since the water isn't just lining up by the skimmer to be filtered. True or False? Is, therefore, programming the pump for daily filtration equal to 1 times the size of the pool adequate?

    question-after pool company installed Superflo VST on 6/13/22 we had reverse flow when we would clean the filter basket of the new pump. Tech added closing multiport (which we have never had to touch for 14 years unless backwashing) we set pump for 12 hours at 3k. Sunday 6/26/22 (13. days after installation of new pump) our system exploded. Pool co claims no responsibility. Others think foul play-we know because of security cameras-there was no foul play. All our valves were opened. Any thoughts on the reverse flow causing a build up in pressure enough to explode pipes? I hav tons of pictures and video-tomorrow the system will be taken apart and pipes will be replaced to try to uncover the mystery.

      I would set it to run for 12 hours at 1800 RPM (165 watts per hour) and then 4 hours at 2400 RPM as long as you don't have a cleaner. This will give you maximum energy savings. If you have a cleaner set it for 2600 RPM for 3 hours. This is roughly equivalent energy wise as 2 hours of run time on a 1.5 hp standard speed pump. So you can imagine the energy savings.

    I'm looking to purchase a variable speed pump. My pool is 24,000 gallons. Right now I have a 1.5 hp pump that I run from 6:30 am to around 1:00 pm. So it runs about 6.5 hours. • @SPL

      When you turn on the pump it will begin it's default priming at 3450 RPM for 5 minutes. To lower the priming speed, as the pump is in it's 5 minute priming mode simply hit the "-" on the control panel. Keep hitting it until the desired New Prime Speed is displayed. Next time the pump primes it should prime at that speed - say 2800 RPM

    We just had an older Hayward replaced with this pump. Pump sits about 6 feet higher than pool water level (it's up in a retaining wall bed) -- it seems like the preset speed 2 isn't high enough and causes it to lose prime. Is there a magic number the speed needs to be programmed to or just trial and error? And is there a way to completely override the schedule and have it run on one speed until changed? I need the heat pump to run pretty continuously to get the pool temp up enough to swim in it...

    • @SPL
      @SPL  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to tinker with the run speeds. There is no always on mode but you can program a 23:59 program by just setting the run time to start a 2:00 pm and turn off for 1 minute at 1:59 pm.

    • @julieguglielmi6230
      @julieguglielmi6230 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SPL if the pump shuts off by itself at all I lose prime -- because the pump is higher than pool water level, the water drains back down and I have to refill the hair trap with water to get it primed again. It can't seem to self prime because of this. If I manually turn the motor off I close the suction from the skimmers/drain at the same time -- and only then can I just start the motor back up without adding water. I reprogrammed the speeds and times and just now realized it all went back to the factory presets.
