I use TH-cam often for instructions on a variety of subjects. This 4 part series was one of the finest tutorials I have found. The 4 parts were expertly presented and easily followed. Great job Brownell, keep up the good work.
Just got handed down my grandfather's M1 Garand and first thing I wanted to do was clean it, but had zero clue of how to go about it. Your 4 part series has effectively saved this family heirloom. Thank you so much.
Excellent videos! Got a M1 Garand, and I didn't know anything about it. With your videos, I was able to disarm it, lubing and put it back together in minutes. TH-cam is my first option always. Better than any manual. Thanks Brownells!
He makes it look so easy. As I’ve struggled in the warm comfort of my home, I can’t imagine that battle weary GI far from home, and in the cold wet Bastogne forests, reassembling a rifle. Thankfully we had the Greatest Generation and not me.
Thank you! Finally field stripped my rifle. These four videos are extremely clear, concise and straightforward. Now I have a freshly cleaned Garand ready to shoot. Once again thank you very much.
I just won a 1944 Garand in a raffle... it definitely needed a little attention and I had no idea where to even begin with it. Thank you for a great instructional video
Shot mine yesterday , haven't shot it for about 15 years. now I need to clean it ... thanks for the videos ... they are pleasant to shoot with little recoil.
Thank you for this tutorial, I have one as well and wanted a nice, clean and complete cleaning guide and this was it. I saved it for future use so that I won't forget the steps. Thank you. Also, I will be looking into the products that you used in the video to clean this amazing rifle.
Amazing Videos!! Thank you so much! my father gave me his M1 Garand. it's an old beauty but I'm not sure how well it's been maintained and I was very nervous to take it apart. But watching your videos step by step gave me the confidence to do it and I've done it! Now I've got it back together and I love it! thank you so much
Thank you, too. Learning from a pro helps a lot. Followed all four videos without problems. Very happy that you guys took the time and effort to create this. Bought a few M1 items from the shop to repay for this critical information.
Thank you for this wonderfully crafted video series. My first CMP M1 needs a once over before I take it out, and your videos helped piece all the information I have found so far together nicely. Fantastic work and a great service to the community!
at 3:15 the bolt isn't locked all the way back and is resting on the follower slide like a mousetrap ready to snap... a good recipe for Garand thumb for the uninitiated. Just for the info of the viewers. Whenever you retract the bolt/op rod on an M1, it's important to do it smartly and fully.
Excellent 4-part series. Thank you! I have several books and a CD on disassembling, cleaning and lubing my Garand. Your 4-part series is easier to follow. My only real crisis moment was in getting the op rod spring assembly back in there! Wow is that under a lot of tension. To try and hold it properly, with the oil on it, and slide the hooks into place was a real challenge. But, finally got it. I am mechanically disinclined and you talked me through it!!
Definitely will consult this again. Just bought a Garand in very good condition. Didn’t take out the bolt guide and catch. Just partially stripped it and oiled it up. Will come back when I need a full field strip.
Great series. Thank you. I’ve had my Garland for about 20 years and never shot it. I thought I might want to clean and lube it first. These Brownells vids are great. Just good solid reliable information without all the unnecessary flashy stuff
Thank you for a great presentation on the M1. Got one as a Christmas gift and was a little shaky regarding cleaning/lub and disassembly/assembly but your video's are spot one. I followed all four and feel very comfortable that I can maintain my Garznd in good condition. Thanks again!
I am just guessing here, this is just an outside hunch on my part... only because I sometimes have this uncanny intuition about things like this ... but something tells me that you have done this once or twice before. :) Thank you Sir, extremely easy to follow along and allowed me to properly take care of my piece of American history .. and my M1-D thanks you as well.
Thank you for your excellent and concise video to help keep the M1 running into the 21st century. Short of the actual us army film this has been the best source of real and useful information regarding the M1.
Thanks very much, but isn’t their a clip that holds the hand guard in place, and a special tool needed to remove it? Did you remove the clip in part 1 and reinstall it here and not show it? Or does that not need to be taken off? Sorry if this is obvious snd I missed it. Great video otherwise, and I think I have enough here to finally strip my Garand without being paranoid I’ll ruin it. ;-)
What a great set of videos, thanks. Can you direct me to a video or source on how to use the M1 GARAND RIFLE. M3A1 COMBINATION TOOL WITH PATCH HOLDER AND CHAMBER BRUSH?
Just a thought, I clean my Garand after i use it about 3 or 4 times a yr. 150 to 200 rounds per yr. I take it down 1 time per yr for grease and inspection any more than that and things can loosen up and cause problems. U stretch a rubber band too much it loses it tension get the drofy
Note that at the final step the bolt was not pulled back all the way. The bolt was simply resting on the rear of the follow assembly. This is the primary cause of our "M1 Thumb". The bolt will slam forward unexpectedly (unloaded) unless you pulled the operating rod that last 1/2" to the rear locked position. I maintain 9 M1's for Yuma, Az American Legion Post 19 and have had a number of stoppages that I believe are related to excessive restriction in that last 1/2" of travel. Do you or anyone know of any possible cause? (Other than lube)
thank you for the tutorial, I ordered everything used in this video! even ordered a new op rod spring beccause mine was kind of kinked and had flat spots :( thanks again.
s a new Garand owner, and lLiving in the Southern Arizona desert, is it still advisable to grease the M1. As they found out in North Africa, lubrication+sand is not good.
At 3:13 the bolt is not locked all the way back. Mine is doing the same thing after my first field strip and reassembly. Is there a reason why it is doing this? I did not have this issue before I disassembled my Garand. Thanks.
Pls help. After I followed all the steps in the videos my gun is feeling some resistance when racking it. The first few inches is when it is having the resistance than once it’s fully open and cocked it racks smooth. Once I pull the trigger and dry fire it it does the same thing again. Some metal on metal resistance it is having. Lmk if I need to explain myself better. Thanks
i have a tanker in 30-06. the video was still perfectly accurate. I did have to stop and rewind it many times. BTW, anybody know if I can use modern commercial 30-06 ammo or is it too hot? running out of the old stuff....
No I wouldn’t use standard ammo. M1 ammo is hard to find now. Ordered 500 rounds 4 months ago and can’t find anymore. M1 ammunition has lower gas pressure.
Ok this is now twice i have struggled to put the trigger group back in. There is something missing from this video. It doesn't just slide right in like that.
@@CoelhoSports you need to angle it in some way, dont force it in. It should pop right in.. The floor plate in front of the trigger touches the wood first. In front of your trigger group you should see a tiny metal rod sticking out forward and the turns 90 degrees, right on the side of that youll see two small circular protrusions(one on each side).. Thats what stops you from just popping it in, you have to angle that somewhat into the stock. If you look down at the stock you should see some metal on the sides thats kind of hooded. Those circular parts on the trigger assembly has to get under that metal part in the sides of the stock. I hope this helps bro. You’re right tho, in the video he just drops it right in and the video is pretty fast paced and i think they should slow it down. After doing many times it gets easier.
Putting that spring back in on my M1 is probably the worst part of this rifle. Everything about this rifle is very straight forward but putting the spring back in. I've had that stupid thing fly ten feet across the room five times in a row because my hands were covered in oil and I couldn't grip it. In the end, I just laugh. I still love this gun though and will never get rid of it.
I thought the spring in the Garand was bad until I put a brand new op rod spring in my M1 Carbine. Thing was so stiff that I slipped trying to get the end of the guide rod into the op rod, the guide rod shot out, went through a wooden closet door, ended up at the back of the closet where I found it about an hour later. Lol
I'll bet you didn't even clean the piston face. You should have lubed the follower assembly where it rides in the slots of the receiver. Those parts rub against each other. USMC - '69 - '73; Vietnam - '71 - '72.
I know I'm late to the party, but you can slow down the video using the gear icon in the lower right of the video to either 75%, 50%, or 25% of normal speed. Plus, you know...there's the pause button... ;)

I appreciate the videos too they make it much, much easier. Thank you Brownells
I’m glad you were able to disarm your gun. Nothing worse than a gun wielding gun!

Absolute best video series to care for my Garand!
i used these videos to clean and oil my grandfather's m1 that probably hasn't been in 40 years, thank you very much for these videos.
Thank you all so much!
Thank you so much for this CRYSTAL CLEAR Maintenance and breakdown video.
Most well made tutorial on the youtube.
We love hearing that! Thank you for the feedback & being a part of the Brownells Family!
Thank you! Finally field stripped my rifle. These four videos are extremely clear, concise and straightforward. Now I have a freshly cleaned Garand ready to shoot. Once again thank you very much.

Can't say "thank you" enough! I am a new Garand owner really appreciate this how-to series.

Yikes!
Thank you so much for this series on the Garand. Very professional, no wasted time & very clear. Kudos, Brownell's. (I also like your return policy)

Thanks I haven't doe this in years and I'm pick up an M1 this week.
Thanks for this, just bought one of these, and have little rifle experience. This guide was extremely helpful.
Just got a new Grand . haven't shot one science Nam. It only took 1 min for it all to come back thenk you.
Thank you for your service Sir!
Well done series, thanks
This was so helpful as I was stripping my gun to clean and got ahead of myself. Thanks a ton

It's magic!! Somehow in the Part 1 video it started out as an M14/M1A, but by the time he puts it back together in Part 4 it turns into an M1 Garand!

Mine didnt have the rubber bands. Can I just use condoms instead?
Excellent yutorial. You helped me when the manual couldn't.
Same here. I could not follow along with instructions from my small arms book.
Thank you so much for watching! :)
great series on the garand. very useful. appreciate it!
What a great video. 👍🏻 although I don’t own a Garand, I am still intrigued by it as well as the M1carbine & M 14
Excellent video...I am curious though...could you use car grease to lubricate the parts or no?
Great video. First time field stripping my Garand. Thank you!
Excellent video. Close up, well lit with great explanation.
Aside from giving myself the worst Garand thumb, this was very helpful.

Very good information love to watch Brownells video
Phew finally finished. Thanks again.
Very good series, thank you very much!
Fantastic series of videos thank you so much
Excellent set of videos! Thank you.
3:13 Ensure when locking the action to the rear it goes all the way back, not hanging up on the follower as it looks here. Watch those thumbs!

I learned a lot. Appreciate your guidance.

Great video! Thanks for making it!
GREAT presentation. Thank You!
Thanks a lot for these videos!
i thought it was not good to remove the gas cylinder as it created wear on the three splines?
“And sometimes the bolt takes a bit of maneuvering to get back into place”
*drops it into place instantly*
Ty I was wondering how to clean it
Awesome! Helped me a lot, thanks!

I just got my first M1 Garand today! Brand new CMP special grade. Followed the video to take it apart and put back together. Easier than I thought 😂
The music relaxed me so much I feel asleep had to watch again lol 🇺🇸
It ain't no GUN, dumb ass. It's called a rifle.
Well done
thanks, very interesting and informative
GREAT vids, thanks a ton !!
Did anybody try to re- barrel M1 to Whelen 35?
Thank you.

Yeah thanks for this, I was screwing with my dads m1 Garand and I jammed the shit outta it, thanks to this vid he won’t know
😂🤣😆
He says nothing about the gas cylinder lock screw tool that should be housed in the butt of the rifle???
Can't kill the enemy with blanks!
Hey stop that
