  • Ledger boards. One of the first and most important parts of building a deck. This is one thing you shouldn't get wrong, so we want to tell you what we use to make sure your ledger will be super strong.

    Been a contractor for most of 40 years. I still build big wood decks and patio covers. I buy these things by the buckets. Simply fantastic for their specific purpose. I have had an inspector try to fail an attachment because I used these. He was wrong and I proved it. The Simpson product will USUALLY go through stucco and does not require any pre drill. They also pull flush on the ledger allowing for attachment of joist hangars over them if the layout pays out that way. Very nice delivery of your content. I have subscribed because you do know what the hell you're talking about.

    To the point and with good insight. Seemingly straightforward but sometimes the most straightforward needs to be said out loud.

    IRC code for vertical fastener spacing is 2" down from the top and 3/4'' up from the bottom of the ledger.

    that is one thing that drives me crazy about most home builders ..when ever I built a house and it was not being sold with a Deck or front porch I would still install a ledger at the framing stage using proper blocking, and compression plates and bolts .

    The performance and pricing of the new Camo ledger screws are way better than Ledgerloks.

    Going over stucco? Would you still use these structural lag or regular stainless 1/2 lags.

    Are spax screws ok for ledgers?

    Had to demolish our “deck” everything was wrong with it, rotting boards, 4x4 posts, no flashing etc. Now I’m stuck with the header boards. I’ve used an impact drill, regular drill to try and get the screws out. Stupid question: Should I buy a hammer drill to get the screws out? Nothing else seems to be working. (I did buy new batteries for drills thinking they might not have enough juice. Let me know, getting desperate 😂

    Thanks for the great video Dr. Decks. I bought a cabin about a year ago that has a deck. A home inspector came and said that he didn’t see any ledger board screws and recommended adding them. Can I use these screws that you recommend?

      These are what your inspector was talking about. On the box or bucket will be a guide. You need to put a lag every 24 inches to 6 inches, depending on how long the deck joists are. The longer the joists the closer you have to space the lags. Use a zigzag pattern.

    Great videos and very informative! Do you have an app you use for planning your layouts and to do calculations for materials. Hurting my brains trying to do it all on paper. Any advice would be appreciated! I know codes and specs change place to place. Is there a one way method? Or I’m sure that just depends on the structure the deck is being attached too. I know I never thought about the belly board. Luckily they were all on new builds that did have it.

    Hi. Thank you for this video since the deck i have was installed with nails. Question: the post for the railing was mounted to the side of the deck with 1/2" bolts (2). I'm repairing/replacing rotten boards. Can i use these structural screws for the 4 x4 posts instead of bolts? Thanks.

    How do you figure out what the framing looks like on the house, if say there isn’t a crawl space?

    What do you do when there is brick veneer on a house where yo need to attach a ledger board? Do you recommend removing the brick and attach ledger as you showed or is there a different way?

    What’s the proper spacing for the fasteners? They’re not cheap, so hopefully not 16” on center.

    • @royalconstruction8032
      @royalconstruction8032 ปีที่แล้ว

      11” is typical in my area

      Spacing depends on joist length and load supported by the ledger board.

    Do you build decks higher than 2 ft and not attach to the house but footings are just 2 ft away from the house foundation. Attaching the ledger board to the house is tricky and i think not attaching decks to the house will bypass the permit in most jurisdictions

    • @jimbob8969
      @jimbob8969 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We stopped attaching ledger boards to houses. Inspectors will not approve them unless they are perfect and just isn’t worth the hassle anymore.
