Well, it was back in a time when television was more... wholesome. Basically, anything that eluded past the "perfect American" box was quickly demolished. This was the time when the 'Middle-Class American Family" shows were the biggest part of television with news and politics being the only real competition.
So, when someone used language outside of the accepted norm of society at the time, you were destroyed publicly and attacked personally on all angles. Think of the "F Word" as being akin to using a racial slur. Since you didn't uphold the wanted image... everyone who may have supported you- and helped in a small way to have it aired; is taken down.
Now, today it seems silly but it's just prior to when cursing was what people expected. Much like how during the reign of shows like 'I Love Lucy' smoking was glorified whereas today it's a smear. Different times.

Its largely done to save time on set up and ensure a good performance with little to no improvisation by the artist. It was likely not her decision and therefore yes, her career was killed by SNL, and not her.
I still think its embarrassing to call yourself a singer and then when they're like "You don't even have to sing, we'll put the audio in for you" you still think you're important enough to be on national television. I could even argue her leaving the set early didn't satisfy the implied promise of entertainment, so she's a crappy artist and entertainer. I get she's doing the job she signed up for in the contract but fakers on the job just don't cut it, from goods and services to arts and entertainment.

They have to lip sync there so they don't lose their voices entirely. The difference with Milli Vanilli is that they never even sang the original tracks they were lip syncing over. It was found that two totally different people actually sang the song and Milli Vanilli took credit for it. I don't know if this was the same with Ashley Simpson though.
