Are My Sacrifices Working?

  • “The Book of Eli” (Denzel Washington) and “The Road” (Viggo Mortensen) provide powerful illustrations for Fr. Mike’s talk about hope this week. These two dystopian stories demonstrate how hope can give us the strength to put everything on the line for something or someone we love, even when we know we may not see the fruits of our sacrifice.

    Oh Fr. Mike...
    You’re such an important light for our youth today, but THIS message hits home for THIS grandmother.
    I shall continue to live my faith...knowing the fruits of my efforts and if my example will be for the Lord...not for my own gratification.
    ...this gives me such joy in my faith. Thank you Fr. Mike. 🙏

    God bless you, Father Mike. This is so encouraging. I truly felt God speaking through you and wept. I am a wife and mother of three beautiful children, ages 14, 18, and 22. My husband and I were both raised Catholic and were married in the Church, but we both fell away from faith in our teens and became agnostic. We raised our children Catholic and they received the sacraments, but we didn't instill strong faith in our children, not having it ourselves. A few years ago, my husband had a strong reversion, and two years ago, so did I. We both returned to Confession after not going for decades. The kids have witnessed the dramatic change in us. But the older two have abandoned the faith, and the youngest one's faith is shaky. After my conversion, I began praying for them. I prayed a novena of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Then all of a sudden, I was inspired to fast. I fasted and prayed for three days, offering my fast for the salvation of my children. I asked God if he would save them, and He answered me... by putting a song in my mind at that moment--"Amazing Grace". This had special meaning to me, because not only is it a song of conversion, but it was a lullaby I sang to my children when they were little. I was hearing God, my Father, singing this as a lullaby to ME, telling me that I am His beloved child, He knows I sang this to my children, and YES, He will save them! I will never forget that moment of God's grace and mercy. I believed God's promise to me, but I knew I might not live to see it. After all, I had not truly come back until I was 48. But two months ago, something amazing happened. My 22 year old son, the staunch ATHEIST, called me at work, asking me to PRAY with him. I listened as my sweet son humbly asked God for help to do his best to pass his final college exam so he could graduate. He then came to mass with our family (he had stopped going) but he did NOT go to Communion. Hmmm..this was an excellent sign! He was starting to believe and didn't feel worthy to receive. Last week, I sent him a video about "How to Go to Confession for those who Forget", and instead of ignoring it or saying he wasn't interested, he said he thought he needed to GO. Wow!Praise God! He is so good! I am beginning to see some "fruit"! Please pray for my son, Brian. Thanks, and God bless!

    Beautiful! thank you father! I would say that we are too attached to our physical world and so we think that if we die we don't see the fruit. I believe that wherever we are, we will see the fruit and we will enjoy the mercy of God also based on the sacrifices and offerings we make on earth. It's not easy though...

      Hi Friend!
      "Now I rejoice in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ's afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church."Colossians 1:24 (I would prefer to have the whole bible to give context, but anyways)
      Jesus is our savior and we only take part "in Christ" we cant earn salvation but purely through grace Jesus lets us take part in salvation as his body.
      Your sacrifices, prayers, fasting and mine do matter, they have meaning through Christ our only Lord and Savior.
      God Bless you

      1. Not spiritually preparing for it properly (say a prayer before mass starts for the grace to focus)
      2. Incorrect music (technically, you're not supposed to use the organ during Lent and Advent)
      3. Poor homilies are driving Catholics away from mass
      4. Weird "ceremonies" in mass, like an award ceremony or something. The mass is about God, not our personal achievements
      5. Hand motions. Technically speaking, the congregation is not allowed to participate in any motions exclusive to the priest, according to Canon Law. This includes the congregation raising their hands to heaven when the priest does, and even holding hands during the Our Father. Technically, such things are not allowed.
      6. Not going to confession before receiving Communion. Seriously, one of the worst sins you can commit is to receive our Lord in the Eucharist while not in a worthy state
      7. Saying the responses!!
      8. Leaving mass early, like right after communion. Like, really? The mass isn't even over, and you *just received Jesus*. Say a prayer or two or ten
      9. When did we stop saying the Prayer to Saint Michael after mass?
      10. We need more Latin Masses!! They're beautiful indeed.

    I saw Hamilton yesterday(Thank you, Jesus!) then watched this today and couldn't help but think of this line that's become so special to me;
    I may not live to see our glory, but I will gladly join the fight. And when our children tell our story, they'll tell the story of tonight.
    . . .tomorrow there'll be more of us. . .
    A few days ago the last line made me think of the resurrection and how Jesus appears to his disciples, and sends them out to baptize people everywhere and teach them about His love. I was so indescribably happy when I found this connection:)
    Thank you Fr. Mike for this video and thank you, Jesus for letting me see your love everywhere!:)

    These works sound like the story of Abraham in Genesis: he *knew* he would never ever see the full fruits of his labors, but he still set about them anyways; knowing full well that he would never see the end in this life, but he still set out on them anyways. And he was an old man when his "spiritual awakening" happened too; so he knew also that his days were numbered, more than you or I would. He was physically fit too, what with the lifestyle he had to live, the physically strenuous lifestyle.

    Hi Guys This Talk reminds me of this wonderful poem....
    Life is but a Weaving” (the Tapestry Poem)
    “My life is but a weaving
    Between my God and me.
    I cannot choose the colors
    He weaveth steadily.
    Oft’ times He weaveth sorrow;
    And I in foolish pride
    Forget He sees the upper
    And I the underside.
    Not ’til the loom is silent
    And the shuttles cease to fly
    Will God unroll the canvas
    And reveal the reason why.
    The dark threads are as needful
    In the weaver’s skillful hand
    As the threads of gold and silver
    In the pattern He has planned
    He knows, He loves, He cares;
    Nothing this truth can dim.
    He gives the very best to those
    Who leave the choice to Him.”

    This video brought up an interesting thought for me. Both the movies you mentioned are post-apocalyptic stories, and currently there is a major trend for people to "prepare for when the grid goes down/solar flares/military invasions/pick your 'end of the world' scenario". Outside of the concept of spiritually preparing to meet The Lord, should we be participating in prepping for such scenarios?

    • @Internetshadow0000

      Unfortunately, possibly yes. Though all the reasons simply reinforce the Revelation prophecy. We are losing specie by the thousands daily, the global climate is edging ever closer to melting all of the ice caps and basically overcoming its regulator and flooding the coastlines of the world in the process, fossil fuels will be expended within the next century I believe, the disparity between rich and poor only continues to grow, pollution is making finding safe drinking water nigh impossible in some parts of the world and sparking up wars and other violence, desertification and loss of arable land is creating the very real growing problem of a food shortage worldwide, overuse of antibiotics is creating more and more "superbugs" that are immune to all of our current antibiotic treatments and finally, the oncoming automation of many industries as a result of the current push for artificial intelligence is set to put millions of already struggling people out of work for the benefit of only those who create the machines and/or train them and those few wealthy enough to afford them, thus exasperating the issues above and setting stage for a potential future conflict If measures are not taken soon to regulate/curb the spread of this technology.
      But these, are just the problems of our time.

      klumpy that's not true. Catholic teaching is that our souls go to Heaven, Hell or Purgatory immediately after we die and are judged by Our Lord. That's known as the particular judgment. (Jesus told the Good Thief: "today thou shalt be with me in Paradise". He wouldn't have said that unless the Good Thief's soul were aware after his death.) I believe God may permit the soul of a loved one to see things He permits. We are reunited with our bodies at the Final, general Judgment. Then we see the deeds of every man who ever lived. Lily's Grandmother may well have see her graduate.

    • @galadethlaernis6266
      @galadethlaernis6266 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eric Derickson : Yes I hope he does because it is TOTALLY serious... tragically many do.
      In the Holy Bible, we read,
      "Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord." [1 Cor. 11:27]
      Regarding this Bible verse, the Catholic Church teaches that Catholics must receive the Holy Eucharist in a state of grace. Catholics must go to Confession prior to receiving Holy Communion if they are in a state of mortal sin. For it is serious to consume the Holy Eucharist without believing that it is truly the Body (the Real Presence) of Jesus. To do so is a desecration. VERY serious.
      In 1 Corinthian 11:27, Paul says that eating or drinking in an unworthy manner is equivalent to profaning (literally, murdering) the Body and Blood of the Lord. If the Eucharist was but a symbol, as the Protestant believe, one could not be guilty of actually profaning (murdering) Jesus in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. We cannot murder a symbol. But here, in this verse, Saint Paul, the divinely inspired apostle of God, makes it clear that when you receive Communion in an unworthy manner, you are profaning the Body and Blood of Christ. Such a behaviour is total disrespect for the Sacred Person of Christ.
      In the same Chapter of 1 Corinthians, Paul continues by saying, ""For all who eat and drink without discerning the body, eat and drink judgment against themselves . For this reason many of you are weak and ill, and some have died." [1 Cor. 11:29-30] In other words, those who receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist in an unworthy manner, in a state of mortal sin, they can expect to be punished by God by illness or death.

    Fr can you make a video or suggest books or pamphlets on how to answer Jehovah Witnesses, they always try to put mistranslated bible verses in my mouth and interrupt and fluster me when trying to answer them, or they just have no answer to my legit questions or say oh that's been corrected of course they don't say how, and change the subject. Thanks keep up the good work Fr

      Have you ever heard of the "Beginning Apologetics" books? Beginning Apologetics 2 and 2.5 are geared toward explaining the faith to Jehovah's Witnesses and also give you some background on that group. It's a 9 book series but you can buy them all separately as well and they are not expensive.
      smile.amazon.com/gp/bookseries/B00CJ2FEYO/ref=sr_es_i_1_1_vsp_B00CJ2FEYO&qid=1498753535&sr=8-1&keywords=beginning%20apologetics
      There is also a Catholic Verse Finder which you can buy for use in all evangelistic situations which costs about $2 I think, my dad used this with some Jehovah Witnesses and said it was very useful to him because it helps you to pin point verses in scripture which address all the Catholic doctrines and those that non Catholics follow. It also includes some short sayings from various saints on the different subject.

      +novela collection JWs can be a problem, can't they?
      I would say,
      1. Realize that if someone 'interrupts' and 'flusters' you, then they are not speaking the truth and they are just out for some kind of 'scalp.' they don't respect you when they do that, nor do they respect the truth. They are willing to cheat, and that's never a good sign.
      2. The biggest mistranslation is John 1:1, where the New World Translation (their translation) translates the last phrase in a way that is slightly possible, but is not the way that one would normally read it. They say it's because the object of the verb 'was' has no definite artuicle, so it's 'and the Word was *a* God'. It's a long story, but the Greek, like our English, has a 'predicate nominative' after the verb 'to be' (is, am, was, were...), and it *never* takes the definite article. That's what the Greek has, and it should be translated just as good old Douay-Rheims has it: 'and the Word was God.'
      You know there are other places where 'God' does not have teh definite article, and yet the NWT says 'God' and not 'a God'? They cheat here, too.
      3. Relax.
      a. There are always two of them, and they will 'gang up' on you. Watch that happen. Understand that's what the're doing.
      b. You are younger than they are. You of course will not know as much as they do about what they are talking about. Don't worry about that. IT doesn't mean that you are wrong. IT just means they are more knowledgeable *in this area*. They are terribly ignorant in history or in Biblical studies in general. By all means get that book on Apologetics. Practice with it. See if you can argue against a sibling (they'd love to try to prove that you can't do it. Won'e they be surprised? And even if they or someone else---how about forming an Apologetics group for six weeks at church? [call it the St Mary's Dominicans or something]---does get the better of you in an argument, that still doesn't mean that their argument is right. You may simply have missed something, which you won't do again when the JWs try to corner you). But practice. Learn the catechism, read the Vatican website or EWTN or Catholic Encyclopedia or something. Read this stuff! Then practice it. Take debate in school. Practice.
      c. Remember that it's not up to you. God never asks you to win every argument. He only asks you to be faithful. Everybody who was a hero in the Bible wasn't perfect, just faithful. Doctors used to say, 'Doctors treat. God heals.' It's like that with us. We tell people about Jesus. God does the saving. Statistics tell us that it takes hearing the Gospel at least seven times before someone takes it seriously. You may be number one, or four, or six, but you'll be one of those 'cloud of witnesses' that everybody needs to finally say 'yes' to Jesus.
      So next time you have a chance to talk to JWs or anyone else, just tell your story. Say what you can, and don't worry. You're doing the work God wants you to do. You're saying 'yes' to God, and by such obedience a hero is born.

    Hey, I want to ask you a question. I hope it doesn't get understood as an attack on someone's beliefs, I am sincerely interested in this. What is your/church's standpoint on different religions. And not just Islam or Judaism, even though it would be interesting to know. Also what is your standpoint on for instance jainism, taoism, tengriism, hinduism, buddhism... Because to me all those other religions have a way of their own which is sometimes just as powerful and wise in it's core as christianity. Buddhism, for instance. The Four noble truths are one of the most ingenious and wise things that someone has ever said.

    Travel with me to Revelation 2 and 3. Jesus gave a revelation to John about 7 churches. There were more than 7 churches that existed at this time, but he specifically gave a revelation to these churches. In this letter he gives them a compliment for what they are doing right, criticisms for what they are doing wrong, and suggestions for how to improve. Basically like a report card for the church. What's mind blowing, is that these letters are prophetic. The exact same struggles each of these churches had are the exact same struggles the church has had since Jesus resurrection until his second coming. The church of Ephesus represents the first church. The church from 30ad to around 70 ad. They had folks who tried to introduce false doctrine, but they didn't tolerate it. They were on fire for God, but they were losing sight of their first love. The second church was Smyrna. Smyrna is where we get the word MYRRH. The word MYRRH means suffering or death. This church was persecuted heavily under the 10 Roman Empires from 70ad to 300 ad. The next church was Pergamus. This is a compound word meaning PER- Mixed or objectionable and GAMUS meaning Marriage. It's where we get the words polyGAMY and monoGAMY. Anyway, this was the mixed marriage church. It's when paganism and Christianity mixed under the leadership of Constantine. Constantine converted pagan temples to Christian churches, Pagan priest to Christian priest, Pagan Celebrations to Christian celebrations. It's where we get the traditions of Easter, Christmas, etc. It's where SUNDAY comes from. Pagans worshiped their false God's on Sunday, but Christians worshiped on Saturday. Constantine merged the two and called in SUNDAY in honor of the SUN GOD. .... All this is historical and Biblical. Visit romancatholicism.com - Roman Catholicism history, doctrine, etc. for more info.

      SteveTheMissionary ...That book is in no way nihilist. Maybe Father Mike got more out of the book. Watch the video again. I read the book before watching the movie. I would argue the book is about love, hope and sacrifice.

    • @aristotelian3098
      @aristotelian3098 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      At first glance, it seems odd that we're getting an argument against a book/movie being nihilist from a profile picture of Che Guevara.
      Why might Fr Mike say it's 'nihilistic'? After struggling for so long and so far, the father dies, and we don't know what will happen to the boy. The couple 'adopt' him, but why? Throughout the film they've run into plenty of cannibalism, and the couple had been following them. That's the note the film ends on.
      It's a strong film, certainly, and very well done, but positive or nihilistic? Depends.

      Aristo Telian ...LOL! I couldn't tell that was a profile pic of Che. All I can say is read the book. I was surprised anyone attempted to make it in to a movie. I think it is a book directed at what a parent goes through. The struggle to stay alive in that type of situation would be harrowing. I'm a single parent so I know. 4:13 Otherwise, you might not get the jest of the depth of the movie. Again, I recommend to read the book

      Trev Doc : The New Testament refers to the first priests (the Apostles) as “Father”. In I Corinthians 4 St Paul teaches about the true nature of being an apostle and refers to himself as the “Father” of the Corinthians (v.15) and goes on to say that Timothy is his son. In I John 2 the Apostle John writes to his “children” and speaks to his fellow priests as “Fathers”. This follows the tradition of referring to the Jewish elders as “Father” (Acts 7:2; 22:1) Jesus is teaching his disciples to watch out for egotistical false teachers. In the context he is criticizing the hypocritical Pharisees who were setting themselves up with particular schools of disciples. The disciples reverenced their scholarly teachers with the respectful titles “Father” and “Teacher.” May God bless you..

    Hello Father Mike!
    I am deeply considering Catholicism, but I really just can't wrap my mind around the veneration of Mary. I don't feel like I can enter into communion with the church until my heart is settled on this topic. I've loved the Lord in Protestantism all my life, and I just want to understand how the Lord works in traditionalism in Catholicism. My local priest suggests that I spend time with Mary to understand her, but that just doesn't make any sense to me. I don't believe that she or any of the saints can hear me, why should they? Something just doesn't feel right about it in my spirit, and that frustrates me. I feel like I've heard all the usual arguments, and it doesn't make any more sense to me now than before (especially this idea of inclusion by exclusion -- the Bible doesn't say, so we can infer by tradition....). I hate feeling confused, as I know confusion is not of the Lord. Help?!
    Your Sister in Christ,
    Toni

    i think your life can have meaning without believing in god, i think it can have more meaning even. i also think you can have morals without religious standards or a belief in god. you do the right thing for yourself and for humanity, and you find meaning in your own existance, lifes what you make it. i just dont see where a belief in god is required or even makes sense

    • @Internetshadow0000
      @Internetshadow0000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are many reasons why I could think of why belief in God is necessary. Ultimately, if there is no God then any meaning we make in life has no point and is nothing more than us lying to ourselves as the physical world with no Creator, is a will-less machine without a purpose. If there is a Creator then then is a plan a meaningful reason we can understand why everything is as it is.
      Another thing to consider is that this existence we are in had to not only come from somehow, but must continue to be by some means. What I mean I that, it is pretty well established that the Universe began with the Big Bang, and that happened...for some reason. Additionally, the laws of nature remain consistent and constant, but what keeps them fixed? Seeing how the world does not change at any of our whims it is not from any of us that this consistency comes from. It can not simply be a force as that simply pushes back the problem of needing to answer what makes that constant. A similar issue arises if we attempt to use a force to explain the origin of the Big Bang, as, if it were a simple will less force, then it would be going off endlessly and not simply once.
      Additionally to this, for me at least the simple consistency of everything into a cohesive and elegant whole, something we naturally find awe-inspiring and beautiful and something that we have an inherent sense of value in, is another proof for it being made for us by God.
      There are issue with the basis for ethics without an eternal truth and eternal lawgiver, but that is a very complicated issue that is better looked into only if we come around to it. To put it shortly however, the concept of a unified and united humanity makes little sense without some reason that is more than simply sharing the same set of molecular coding, it must run deeper than that. Without some form of spirituality however, any attempt to appeal to this runs in roadblocks.
      Ultimately all of this is simply auxiliary to bolster my faith however and help me to orient my life within it. The simple reason why I believe in God is that He has been involved in my life and has shown Himself to be what He says that He is. I do hope that this all helps you to at least see some of the reasons for why some people find God necessary. Of course this is obviously not an exhaustive list and if anyone would like to add to it, or comment please feel free to. God bless you all and I wish you all the best.

      Liftboard Rider the belief that you need to believe in god for life to have meaning is living for the end,which is the exact opposite of what most religions want you to do, god doesnt want you to live to die for him thats a waste of life god wants you to live for him... or atleast i would hope so. something in the bible about the gift of life and not wasting it or vasicly shitting all over it with your actions. i think its much better to live for yourself and others and make the world which we can be almost certain will be here after were gone better rather than for a possible reward after death. i think reality is a much better reason to make the most of reality.

    • @cyruslever586
      @cyruslever586 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Liftboard Rider i understand why people take comfort in religion and the idea of god but wanting something to be true and using a simplification to makes sense or rather remove the need/desire to make sense of the the world seems silly and irresponisble to me. for me personally i think the world would be a better place without a catch all magically being that bribes you to be a good person and explains away all of the big questions and absolves you of all guilt and responsibility with a few words and possibly some heartfelt thoughts after the fact.

      Cyrus Lever ...You seem to have an inherent ability to seek the Truth. If you like to read, I suggest some of the writings of St Augustine. He was a restless heart. He was a great philosopher and didn't find Christianity until later in life. You would be surprised with the number of Saints that felt like you do.

    There is no amount of works, or prayers, or hail mothers, or confessions to a earth dweller man, can do anything to save you. ONLY believing that what Jesus did on the Cross was COMPLETE and by God given Grace can you be saved. Anything or any other way is the way of Satan.
