in my opinion some of haydens work greatly surpassed mozart's. mozart wrote tons of generic music that has no originality but hayden's creativity all shown up here. beautiful piece

I think it's unfair to state that Mozart wrote 'lots of genetic music' Mozart wrote a vast amount of music that was extremely creative and original in style- this is probably why Mozart is much more known than Haydn is. There's a saying I heard not long back from a teacher..."if you can remember the melody, it's Mozart. If you can't remember the melody, it's probably Haydn. As harsh as that may sound, it holds a great deal of truth with it. As lovely and beautiful Haydn's music is, his melodies (not all but the majority) are medleys in which don't really have a great impact unlike Mozart. Mozart is probably one of very few, if not the greatest composer to write extremely catchy and rememberable tunes. Again, this reflects Mozart's originality.
Matthew Whitehouse melodies are not everything. Haydn blurs our the difference between melodies and harmonies. A lot of his melodies are broken chords. Haydn excels in harmonies, and his way of breaking them is compelling and interesting.

he got much of haydn's style because he was haydn's student and studied his pieces :)
