so when you do put out new feeders or
00:07
you change your location or you put
00:09
different food in those feeders let's
00:11
talk about that what kind of reaction
00:13
that the birds have to that new food
00:16
being put out sometimes the reaction is
00:19
is not what we want
00:21
I know you get a brand new feeder and
00:24
three things you a brand new feeder
00:26
which may look different putting a
00:28
different food in a feeder you have or
00:32
changing the location of an existing
00:34
feeder or a new theater I think the
00:36
worst thing is a new type of food a
00:38
brand new feeder looks a little
00:39
different in a new location but you're
00:41
excited about it you do this and you put
00:44
it out there and nothing happens the
00:47
birds seem to shy away from it or they
00:49
they pay no attention to it and look and
00:50
go somewhere else it's there's a couple
00:53
of things involved here
00:54
birds are indeed creatures of habit they
00:58
see something they finally tested
01:01
nothing ate him when they were there and
01:03
food was okay so they come back and they
01:06
start defending on this food source it's
01:07
reliable they know about it they come
01:09
back and it looks different we're kind
01:13
of the same way you go to your favorite
01:14
restaurant and you get a steak and it's
01:16
yellow you know it's the steak but
01:19
you're not going to eat that thing you
01:21
got to back away you're sure that
01:23
everything's okay the birds do the same
01:25
thing we get so many calls over the
01:28
years about somebody making one of these
01:31
changes that looks very different is one
01:35
of them and food in their regular
01:37
theater that looks very different I'll
01:39
show you some in just a minute and then
01:41
moving to position of where the feeder
01:44
is they get used to the food to look
01:47
into position any of those change you
01:50
may have a problem and like the D calls
01:52
we get like well I put your seed in my
01:54
feeder and the birds just don't like it
01:56
well you got to give them some time they
01:59
will get used to it and they may like it
02:01
a whole lot better once they get past
02:03
the change let me grab a feeder here and
02:08
first of all hey we'll do a little plug
02:11
this
02:13
Nicole Peter I would love me think of
02:16
nothing because it's just coals on the
02:18
top there you're good-looking you're
02:19
very doable and the easy claim is just
02:23
phenomenal no no problem is cleaning
02:26
this feeder at all but here's a nice new
02:29
feeder we just thought if we're going to
02:31
put it out and what they're used to say
02:34
maybe there's old plastic feeder or some
02:35
other feeder just totally differentiate
02:37
and now that the new look and then you
02:40
have something does a problem is here's
02:42
a nice tooth beater again and this has
02:45
closed hot meats in it it looks probably
02:48
different than a lot of the foods
02:49
they're used to seeing and they're gonna
02:52
look at this and they don't see what
02:54
they used to eat it'll just be a little
02:56
shy about it they may come and look and
02:58
then go away come back but you're going
03:00
to see it a slowdown a big slowdown
03:02
because of that and here's another
03:05
example of a really great food pure 10th
03:08
army it's just like the the chocolate
03:12
bars for a bird think this lovely stuff
03:14
all birds even Birds it don't typically
03:17
eat see can eat this because there's no
03:19
shell look it just looks different than
03:21
what they're used to seeing and I'll
03:24
guarantee you that if they start eating
03:26
once they start eating this
03:28
the the other thing you have to keep in
03:33
mind is position they they know where
03:36
the feeder and their plane source of
03:38
food is and if it moves probably more
03:40
than three to six feet away they're
03:43
gonna be a little hesitant to go to the
03:45
new location and you see this especially
03:48
with hummingbirds by the way it's a
03:49
great example if he's got keying in on a
03:52
location you'll see we receive returning
03:55
hummingbirds come in and the spring down
03:56
and they know where the feeder was last
03:59
year and literally if it's two feet away
04:01
they'll come to where it used to be and
04:03
hover and look and then go somewhere
04:05
it's perch for a minute before they
04:07
Great advise as I was about to throw my feeder in the trash. 😂
I live in an apartment complex with woods right near my apartment. About two years ago, I wanted to start attracting wild birds near my apartment. I put up two simple tube feeders to see if any bird would come to them. Well, it took almost a week, and started seeing house finches, blue jays, cardinals, sparrows, chickadees, and titmice coming to them in numerous pairs. I thought to myself, I should put out more feeders and see what other birds stop by. I decided to go with a simple wooden hopper feeder. That made more cardinals and blue jays come by, and often brown headed cowbirds and grackles (pesty birds). I don't mind them, but they do make a mess with the seed sometimes. I started noticing squirrels making their way up the shepherd hooks, so I made a homemade squirrel baffles using aluminum ducting. Works great. I still have them up. So, if the squirrels wanted to feed on the seeds and nuts, I usually spread some out on the ground near a small crape myrtle tree right next to my apartment. That solved the squirrel problem from them getting to my feeders. Been working well for almost a year and a half, until I've noticed not much activity coming from my feeders anymore. I'm not sure if it is predators in the area including hawks or stray cats, but I haven't been noticing anything strange or peculiar. I have been always using simple black oil sunflower seed, peanuts, and sometimes nyjer. The bird activity has severely diminished since then. I'll have the occasional house finch, cardinal, chickadee, and titmouse stop by, but not in great numbers like it used to be. Usually in the winter into spring is when I see the most birds around the feeders, but it hasn't been the same since then. Should I have to go with a different style feeder, add more feeders, or change out the seed variety? I only have two tube feeders, and a hopper feeder right now.
I'm going through this. I adore all wild birds. I'm really in love with colored songbirds. I'm not getting a response so far. I bought the best and it's good. Put out two new feeders last week ...No birds. .arghhhhh
Live in quiet neighborhood with 1 acre and conservation land out back
Since mving here 1 month ago I’ve noticed no burds in my yard at all! Each day ZERO birds! Creepy! Why?
I live on the edge of a national forest, had a lot of different bird species this past spring and summer, until about two weeks ago. I happened to see a red tailed hawk swoop in a few different times, even saw him catch one the grey squirrels. Now everything is gone. All my feeders were under a canopy of trees, with plenty of shrubs nearby for the birds to hide in. But this hawk has used all this coverage to his advantage, hiding himself. So I’ve taken all my feeders down for now, giving this hawk time to move on. I’ll put them back out this winter, which is the time of year they need it the most anyhow.
Enjoyed your advice Richard. I just made and put up a new balcony type feeder for the birds in my very urban area. I know there are some species in the neighbouring garden amongst the cherry blossom trees. I have made some homemade suet and peanut butter cakes to entice them in. So I guess it is a waiting game. My only worry was I have a fake owl decoy on top of the roof garden to deter seagulls, would smaller songbirds be afraid of this also?
Coles Wild Bird thanks for the advice.
I have a question. We just moved. We closed on our house in June. I put our feeding station up and it took 4 days for start seeing some birds. We have your standard seed and some nectar. The first few birds are the purple finch, golden finch, and a hummingbird. Would you know why I haven't seen one chickadee, hairy or downy woodpecker, blue Jay, red bellied woodpecker. I seen so many of these birds at our old house. Could it be the combination of new feeder station plus time of year?
Just recently moved in with my mom after about twenty years of being away from home so there’s been quite a bit of revitalization projects lately. One thing I’ve done recently is put seeds in an old bird feeder that’s been in the same spot and unused for atleast 15 years ago. Birds won’t even touch it. I’ve been waiting and waiting for some action from the window but no one is coming.
I recently put a squirrel baffle device on the pole i hang bird feeders on . Its doing its job of keeping the squirrels out of the bird feed, but now a whole flock of birds can pass over my house, come back and all land in my yard, even land RIGHT on the feeder thats been out there for 4 years now and not touch one morsel of bird seed. I put a bucket of peanuts out far away from the bird feeder for the squirrels, so i don't think the problem. Do the squirrel baffle devices scare the birds? Does anyone know?? Im so sad i don't get to watch the birds from my kitchen window anymore whilst doing dishes😢
I hav a damn coopers hawk cunin round scaring my birds please help
You took 5 minutes to describe the problen and thrn you said be patient. We know what the problem is. We are looking for solutions. This could have been a 30 second video so you could say, give it time
Only animals I attract are squirrels, raccoons and stray cats.... smh
slow down in consumtion is cheaper on my wallet
Don't feed the birds. Nature does it.
