  • Uncovering the bent irons in the mud wagon body show tales of possibly how the stagecoach wreck may have happened. More of the picture is coming into perspective the further along we get in to this restoration project. Building and restoring horse drawn vehicles comes with it's fun discoveries.

I love how you speed up the video in editing, to get through the repetitive stuff but still show how it's done. It gives a humorous note and make it look like you're in a big hurry to get done. When you describe how the damage was possibly done, I picture Westerns where the wagons are in a chase, run off the trail and flip after shedding the occupants and the horses.

One summer in the early 1970s I was working for a John Deere dealership in Michigan. At that time the sales team took in a lot of what could be called junk in order to make a sale. One of my jobs now and again was to break those trade-ins down so they could be sent out for scrap. An acetylene “gas wrench” was an invaluable tool.

    • @SteamCrane

Hacksaw blade is much thinner than a sawzall, since it's tensioned by the frame, thus hacksaw is less intrusive and more controllable.

Now we found out that Dave is actually an accident investigator in his off season 😁 It's fun to watch how you go through and figure out all the history and character of an old coach or wagon. It really makes you imagine what might've happened. It‘s actually a copy of the trays pharmacists use to count out pills. A perfect example for how helpful it can be to go through life and watch what other trades and professionals have come up with to help with little chores that might also be applicable in your own business! To build that did not take more than 20 minutes and it has saved hours of sifting through small parts. And the detective part of this build is superb! My first comment was that I wondered how Dave would ever „restore“ the pile of firewood into a coach. And by now I have to admit that I could not imagine how much information was still buried in that heap of broken wood and rusted and bent metal. This is getting like a n edition of Hercule Poirot investigation. Dave is the consummate master craftsman with such a deep knowledge of his subject area.

I imagine that 20 donkeys yoked together would create a pretty powerful pull. I see these big freight trains (modern ones) that have two or three locomotives moving an enormous number of cars. If something spooked them, the donkeys might pull wagons through terrain that beat the wagons to pieces. (Although donkeys don't spook as easily as horses.)

Agreed...this is sort of the same story that goes with many aged things such as the "Queen Mary". When they retired her they began restoration and modifications to make her that floating Hotel a couple decades back and they had reported how her timeline was revealed simply by removing the many layers of paint from the hull. It revealed her war time and passenger ship life paint schemes as well as when she was used to bring home the inlisted after the war ended, a total modification. An interesting process for sure.
Since this mud wagon project started, I've paid more attention to "stage coaches" in old western TV series and films and few are made the same ! I can't wait to see how the coach is attached to the frame and its "suspension" work. They were pretty smart back then, no question in that. Thank you ECS.

I have an old "Coach Gun" it's a double barrel 20ga pistol. Originally designed in the 1600's. It was just a point and shoot scatter gun. This one is actually a remake of an original that I used to own, called a "French Bastards Gun" the remake is named a "Howda" Still fitting for the wild west days before modern break over shotguns. I still have a passion for old black powder guns, even though taking them out to shoot now cost a lot more that firing modern hardware.

Dave, at 8:09 and again at 8:24 you wipe the screws across something. Is it soap? I use Vaseline (petroleum jelly) to lubricate wood screws. I’d be interested to know what you use and why. (Love the forensics as you explore this wagon’s history. 👏👏👌)

Soap because it's a dry lubricant so it doesn't leave an oily mess.
