    Your avocado trees do not appear to be heat or sunburned what so ever - kudos
    and Thank You very much for the pointers

    Very good suggestions, Greg. This is at least 10 days of a very serious heatwave in Southern California. 🥵🥵

    Surround WP works well in our experience when applied as: 1) mix with water to a consistency of thick white paint and then applied to the trunk and branches of the avocado tree with a brush; 2) diluted further with water to make a suspension and then sprayed onto the leaves.
    Do not mix Surround WP with any oils. The nature of Surround is an extremely fine powder so if you mix it with oils the powder will stick to the oils and get bigger than they were intended to be and they will lose their effectiveness.
    Our Dilution:
    For a 2 Gallon Sprayer:
    add ¼ - ½ lb Surround WP clay for every 1 gallon water, which works out to about 2-3 cups clay powder per gallon water.
    For a 2 Liter Sprayer: add 1½ cup clay for every 2 Liters water.
    Our Mixing Method:
    1. add ½ (1 liter or gallon) water into sprayer tank (do first to avoid large clumps of clay at the bottom)
    2. add ½ lb clay to water
    3. close up sprayer container sealing it tightly, then agitate for 30 or more seconds
    4. top off container with other ½ (1 liter or gal) water
    5. close up sprayer container sealing it tightly, then agitate for 30 or more seconds
    6. give it another good shake before application
    7. pump up the pressure and spray tree (leaves and bark) thoroughly (all sides & surfaces)
    8. apply coat #1, then wait 30 minutes to dry, then
    9. apply coat #2, and eventually coat #3 (or more) to get a broader coating
    10. apply weekly and after heavy rains
    Throughout the Year:
    • apply 1st spray just after petal fall (after all flowers have been pollinated)
    • apply throughout the fruiting season (e.g., 6-7 times until harvest)
    We live in a coastal community where temperatures are not as high as what Greg has and refers to in this video. Nevertheless, we have had success in using Surround WP to provide sunburn and heat stress protection for our avocado and citrus trees.

    I’m in Mission Viejo, it was 98 here today, 100 yesterday. My 5’ hass and 8’ fuerte are under a white spf50 uv canopy measuring 10’ x 10’ - no issues thus far - no burnt leaves. I will say, my gut tells me that the kaolin clay spray is more likely to clog up the stomas that permit leaves to transpire and as well, interfere with photosynthesis, eh?

    • @gregalderdotcom
      @gregalderdotcom  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, agreed. So some say this isn't wise. Why stop the leaves from functioning? But others say that is the point: slow down the leaves' function so they don't require as much water (which would normally be evaporated from the stomates).

      @@gregalderdotcom Thanks for your response - appreciate that. Re: the post; I’m too much a purest to go that far in covering the leaves with a kaolin* spray, which will have the high probability of interfering with the natural order of Mother Nature’s process of healthy transpiration and photosynthesis. That said, I have certainly followed your past advice in hosing down my avos when the temps are hellacious with no adverse effects. But thennnnn, that takes but a few minutes with two trees - for YOU, THAT probably transfers to an all day affair! I enjoy your posts and emails, all of which are very informative and get right to the point without excessive yabber* and ego pumping! Goodonya mate! *kaolin: I’ve used extensively as an essential element in much of my pottery. *yabber: Aussie slang for talk a lot. Cheers!

    Ideal long term sunshade is 50 percent , I use it not only on very top but 3 sides as well not to ground but a foot up from ground and north side is left open so it doesn't trap too much heat.

    Thank you for the Video Greg! What kind of irrigation line do you run for the overhead? 1/4” or 1/2” up a pole??

    • @gregalderdotcom
      @gregalderdotcom  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Damien, I use 1/2" along the ground and then usually 1/4" up the pole. I do use 1/2" up the poles of a couple trees and that works fine too; it's just a little heavier with the extra water in it so it's more likely to make the pole lean.

    Wanted to know if avocado's are susceptible to wind damage like litchi's? I'm in Durban, South Africa and this is our windy season. 1 September I planted out an avo tree I grafted in March. I put up a hessian wind break just in case

    • @gregalderdotcom
      @gregalderdotcom  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bjorn, Avocados can be susceptible to wind in a couple ways, but at least in Durban the humidity never gets very low like it does here in California. Our dry winds suck the moisture out of the trees rapidly. I think the danger to avocados of your winds will be dropping fruit and knocking little trees over so putting up your hessian wind break sounds wise.
      I spent some years living in Lesotho and visited Durban many times, and I remember this season of winds very well! Good kiteboarding time!

    Wanted to ask how do you protect your trees in the winter? And specifically how much sun at minimal do the trees need? I have a Carmen and Greengold and mostly shady yard in Northern California east Bay Area- Greengold def burnt during the heatwave but Carmen actually thrived. Trying to help them make it through the winter without bringing them indoors…

    • @gregalderdotcom
      @gregalderdotcom  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ally, Sun all day is best, especially in winter. If they're not in the ground, you could just move them next to a wall of your house on cold nights (forecast to be below 30). That always gives them a few degrees of protection. Here's a post about what I do to protect my trees in winter: gregalder.com/yardposts/protecting-avocado-trees-from-cold/

      I have used heavy quilt over the tree in freeze conditions with micro sprinkler under the cover, also old incadesnt Christmas lights with cover over the Plants Protected my Guava Plants from Freezing to the ground which they did in the Past, The colder the more protection needed

    Hi, Greg! I grow avocados in Ukraine. Grows well in open ground. But in pots, deformation of young leaves is observed during their growth. Maybe micronutrient deficiency? Have you encountered this problem yourself?
