  • The first piece is a prelude by Compte d'Logy (Jan Antonio Losy), an accomplished amateur lutenist-composer in Bohemia at the beginning of the 18th century.
Next is Kemp's Jigg (spelled just like that with two g's) an anonymous piece of Elizabethan theatre music named for the famous comic actor Will Kemp, who is thought to have been the inspiration for Yorick, as in "Alas, poor...." in one of Hamlet's famous speeches.
Kemp's Jigg segues directly into two original pseudo-Celtic banjo pieces. The first one is a slip jig (9/8 meter) called The Cat in the Cradle and is named after a great music venue that was founded by Mike Cross in Chapel Hill years ago.
The last one is called The Laughing Reel and is named for a band that I played with in Durham during the '80s called The Laughing Crinoids. We recorded these last three tunes with the entire band too.
    Notes by Fred Boyce
Video and Audio recording by David Wells.

Beautiful compositions, both musical and visual! (I'm digging all the stripes.) I also like the way you strung the tunes together. And the sense of relaxed intensity -- quick, but unhurried and expressive. Where can we find more of this artist?
