- Filmed at the USA Volleyball 2012 Pacific Northwest Qualifier this clip features an amazing effort and volleyball play. The Helena Volleyball Club 18 and under girls Team Puma is the team that makes this great volleyball play.
The ball hits a hand, a knee and then gets passed over the net only to hit the other team members while they were celebrating - a little too early.
This play was perfectly legal and the officials correctly awarded the Puma's the point. - กีฬา

Haha that same thing happened in one of my games. Our rival was going to make a kill, but the ball hit the top of the next and fell over to our side. They started celebrating because they thought they got the point but our setter popped the ball over and we got the point :)

it hits the ground. It goes off the girls hand, the other girl bumps it and the ball goes straight into the first girls knee. After bouncing off her knee, it hits the ground, bounces up and they are able to get it over.

Not sure where people are getting the 4 hits from. In the initial attempt to play the player missed the ball. It is 3 hits.
+sarnens Uh watch the video again. Player 2, 9, 2, then 11 hit the ball in that order. The initial attempt to block isn't counted.
+Ryan Nunez Block wasn't made, first player to touch the ball was number 2, plays it straight onto the leg of number 9 which pops it up to number 11. 3 touches, don't quite know where you're getting the extra touch by number 2 from!
+mackemforever The video isn't that clear. I see both sides of the story. Some people think it comes off 2 onto number 9's knee then up for the libero. On the other hand it does sort of look like it comes off 2, then hits 9's knee and the trajectory of the ball seems to be going down and hits 2 again while she's on the ground then goes over from the libero.

Rattlesnakemeuk I agree. However the point of this was that the team started celebrating before the ref blew the whistle. And as someone who has ref'd you are bound to make mistakes like this. Quite often when players try to pancake the ball, it's hard to see whether it connected with the hand or the ground especially in quick play.
One of two things.. It either hits the ground after the knee.. Or hits off the knee into the first initial player and up which in this case would be "Four Contacts".. So the team should've lost the point, BUT the other team should always play the whistle
It hits the RB hand first then the knee and then they hit it over 3 hits.
Kevin Widmer Watch it again. The ball clearly drops after hitting her knee and the trajectory changes to bounce back up. It was a dead ball after the knee hit there is no doubt about it.
Imcuddely1 I noticed that too. It definitely looked to me like it was hit 4 times before going over. I don't know all the rules to volleyball but apparently there was a rule change a few years ago to allow this. Only know this cuz I read thru the rest of the comments. Lol!

It actually never did hit the floor. Our team reviewed it multiple times and it was perfectly clean. I also saw it live and it was good :-)
That was a bad call. It either hit the floor or the first girl a 2nd time. It clearly goes up after it hits the first girl's hands. Then after the knee it goes down. Then it looks like it hit the first girl again, or the floor. Then it goes to the girl in the back who bumps it over. This is just what it looks like to me. If this was slowed down, it would be a lot easier to see what happened.
I'm sure it was dug up, hit the girl's knee, redirected down into the floor (too much of a bounce) and bounced up for the 3rd girl to pass it over. I would say 3 touches only. Surprised the refs couldn't see this. A hint would be the ball would be spinning in the other direction if bounced up from the knee.
Yeah, in the video you can clearly see it get dug up, hit the girls knee going down, then it goes up again. Then the last girl hit it back over. It would either be 4 hits, or 3 hits and the ground.
I just learned that you can slow down a TH-cam video by clicking the settings icon in the lower right, then "speed." I slowed it down to 25%, and then it was easy to see the ball hit the floor so was dead. I wonder did the other team protest this call?

I did this once. I was a 7th grader, the other team was high schoolers and up, so when the ball was shanked they didn't expect me to run after it. They began to celebrate, but I ran for the ball realizing that my legs were long than my arms so I slid and hit it with my foot and it flew over the net. I slid right into the wall and got blood all over the gym floor, but it was worth it because it was a 23-25 game point that brought us to 24, and we passed their points because of a little 7th grader. The best part? The team was our biggest rival.

Definitely 4 touches. It's hard to see clearly but after it hit the knee, it DEFINITELY goes down, then up again. You can't dispute that. Whether it hit the arm of the falling player No. 2, or the floor, or the foot of No. 9, all scenarios mean the pink team should have lost that point.

You should change the title and description of the video: it was either 4 contacts or a dead ball and hence not a legal play hence not a "great play" that "hits the other team while celebrating"
As someone else pointed out, here are the four contacts:
1 #2 goes down to pop it up
2 #9 gets hit in the knee - but notice the ball is going back DOWN, FAST when it hits her in the knee
3 either it hits the ground at this point (looks most likely), or it hits her own foot (double contact for the second ball), or #2 pops it up again
4 #11 libero sends it over, which is fourth contact if the libero did in fact pop it up on the third
So at the very least four contacts dead ball.
Although bad plays happen, and at the time the truth is not always obvious, it's not cool to keep the title and description up under the now knowingly false pretense of "a great play".

And we're not talking about the refs that had to see it in real time and make an immediate decision - so alluding to their call as if refs are right 100% of the time is disingenuous. Kids are not stupid - they're going to see that you are knowingly being dishonest. Is that what you want to teach kids?

But kids are not stupid and they and current kids and their parents will see how the coach is being dishonest when it can clearly be seen in the video the opposite of what now he's just simply ignoring to hold onto a false claim - is that what you want to teach kids?

Afterwards in a video that can slow down to see the now clear four hits and/or it hit the ground instead?
Time to own up and say "wow it was easy to miss when it happened, but looks like we missed the fact we should have lost that rally" instead of clinging to the false claim and teaching kids to lie if you feel like it.
Pointing this out about the coach does not take away from the kids having a great year - it's a reflection on the coach and his intent to be dishonest and what that teaches kids who will clearly see this about him.

The knee was the second hit, and clearly the knee did not pop it up. The knee pushed the ball down and she had to dig for it and then the 4th hit went over.

great dig 11!!!! but it was 4 hits if anyone was paying attention which is a ref call. I play volleyball and I KNOW a to close to call play when I see one. The setter hit the ball first then the other girl came in to save it which was the second hit then it hit the setters knee and foot (double hit, illegal) that being 3rd and 4th hits would have made number 11's play the 5th hit making it automatically the other teams point. Unless however the setter didn't make first hit making it all a fair play, but still if you watch closely when #2 save the ball it clearly its either the floor or her foot then to her knee which is considered a double hit making it still a 4 hit play. But it was one of those plays that was to close to call. Still, never give up until YOU HEAR A WHISTLE BLOWN!!!! Good job girls.

No... the first touch was the dig, then the knee, then the floor (dead ball), then the pass over the net. 3 contacts total, with a dead ball after the 2nd contact.

While it's clear that the ball either hit the ground or the second player to touch the ball contacted twice (you can slow videos down on youtube now, guys), it doesn't change the fact that the referee didn't see it and subsequently didn't blow the whistle. So play on.
It is likely the official and line judges miss either a double contact (knee to foot) or ball touching the ground (knee to ground).
It's legal if it's one attempt to play the ball.
you're correct. however, its illegal for the same person to touch the ball twice in a row unless its off a block. the direction change ClayMartin11 mentions is a HUGE indicator of a double touch/bounce off the knee then off the floor.

Watch the video in pausehouse(dot)com (allows you to watch videos in slow-mo and play frame by frame), and you'll notice the ball definitely goes down first after it is hit off the knee of player #9 and appears to hit the ground before popping up again for #11 to return it.
4 touches! Though, that's hard to see in person and not in slow motion.

Look at the SPIN of the ball and the trajectory it took, it was hit more than 3 times. Bad call by the ref.

That was definitely 4 hits. 2 hit it initially, it bounced off of 9's knee back onto 2's hand, and then back to 11. 2-9-2-11, 4 hits, ref was wrong and this video really doesn't deserve such a good like to dislike ratio.
The ball definitely doesn't hit the floor.. If you watch it in slow motion (which i have already done because i had believed the ball hit the floor too) you can clearly see that when #2 dives for the ball, she hits the ball UP into #9's knee & it bounces straight back out. The only reason it looks like it hits the floor is because it was so close to the ground & it was moving fast. Just watch it in slow motion & what i just said will be easier to understand.

Not anymore. There was a rule change over a year ago. The ball can now hit almost anywhere on the body.

It was only three hits!! The first girl at the next tips it and that causes it to go down, the girl on the far right digs it up, and the girl in black hits it over. The girl second to the far left APPEARS to hit the ball before the girl in black but if you pay CLOSE attention she misses the ball. So it IS three hits.

I think the final hit which was supposed to be the last contact over became a combined double contact over. So 4 hits, bad call, it should have been the yellow team's point?
Just to clearify: The referee can only call the ball dead if he actually see the ball in contact with the floor. If he does not, then ha cannot make a call and play continues. And the other team need to learn to play until the ref blows the whistle, otherwise the ball is still in play. However, seeing this many time in slow, I still think the ball hits the floor, the ref don't have slow motion like we do. This is also why the winning team seems so surprised about it, they also think the ball hits the floor first.

I saw only 3 touches, and its not really easy to see for us since the players are hiding it, but the ref is closer and can see everything from there, so it is most likely that he did the right thing

The ball hits the floor. IDK if you guys are blind for whoever says to "watch it in slow motion", even if you did, obviously the ball hits the ground before the libero puts the ball over. The ball can't hit the foot because when you kneel, the knee is out further just a little bit more than the foot. Either way, the other team deserved the point. Ref made a mistake and in a NCAA championship game, that ref will be fired. Consider that point lucky that the ref is too old and blind.

What was she blocking? The other team set the ball over the girl's hands there was never a block during that play at all...

It was legal though. its only only 3 touches, no violation such as lifting violation. Remember there are lots of officials in the game, linesmen and referees and they are witnessing the play in different angles and if there's violation, one official should see it, but no one does. that is why this play is legal. lots of you might say that the ball hits the girls knee and the floor, but you can't tell that it does because of the angle and position of the camera. peaceyow! :D
